Assessing demand and supply-side enabling and constraining factors on the provision and use of health services in urban slums of Southeast Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: In the face of rapid urbanization, developing countries like Nigeria are witnessing a surge in rural-urban migration, with a predominant concentration in low-income neighborhoods known as slums. The provision of appropriate health services in slums is limited due to their unplanned nature. Similarly, access and utilization of health services are constrained by many factors, especially the unavailability of formal healthcare providers in urban slums. This study investigated challenges and opportunities to the provision and use of health services in urban slums in two states in south

Implementation barriers and enablers of midwifery group practice for vulnerable women: a qualitative study in a tertiary urban Australian health service.

BACKGROUND: Maternity services have limited formalised guidance on planning new services such as midwifery group practice for vulnerable women, for example women with a history of substance abuse (alcohol, tobacco and other drugs), mental health challenges, complex social issues or other vulnerability. Continuity of care through midwifery group practice is mostly restricted to women with low-risk pregnancies and is not universally available to vulnerable women, despite evidence supporting benefits of this model of care for all women. The perception that midwifery group practice for vulnerable

A casemix study of patients seen within an urban Aboriginal Health Service dermatology clinic over a five-year period.

This is the largest study of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dermatologic presentations to an urban specialist clinic within a community-controlled health organisation. It adds to our understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dermatoepidemiology. Patient files were reviewed over the five-year audit period, with age, gender, Indigenous status, diagnosis, disease category, 'new' or 'review consultation' and 'did not attend' (DNA) data recorded. Our study shows that eczema and benign, pre-malignant or malignant neoplasms are the most common presentations for urban Aboriginal an

Exploring sex differences in drug use, health and service use characteristics among young urban crack users in Brazil.

INTRODUCTION: Studies have shown important gender differences among drug (including crack) users related to: drug use patterns; health risks and consequences; criminal involvement; and service needs/use. Crack use is prevalent in Brazil; however, few comparative data by sex exist. We examined and compared by sex key drug use, health, socio-economic indicators and service use in a bi-city sample of young (18-24 years), regular and marginalized crack users in Brazil. METHODS: Study participants (total n = 159; n = 124 males and n = 35 females) were recruited by community-based methods from impo

The Role of State Medicaid Expansions in Integrating Comprehensive Mental Health Services into Opioid Treatment Programs: Differences Across the Rural/Urban Continuum.

Co-occurring mental health (MH) problems are common among those with opioid use disorders (OUDs). However, most opioid treatment programs (OTPs) do not provide MH services. We measured the association between state level characteristics (Medicaid expansion status and rurality) and MH/OUD services integration. We used a generalized linear model to estimate how the association between integration and Medicaid expansions varied across levels of rurality (National Survey on Substance Abuse Treatment Services; 2018; n = 1507 OTPs). The predicted probability of OTPs offering MH services decreased as

Assessment of health system responsiveness in delivering HIV and AIDS care services at Urban sites of Pakistan - a protocol for cross sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: The capacity of a health system to fulfill the justifiable demands of patients and their caregivers while delivering prompt, courteous and patient-centered treatment is known as health system responsiveness (HSR). HSR can be considered as a measure for the quality of the health system. Keeping aside the clinical aspects of healthcare, it focusses on the health system's capacity to meet the needs of patients in accordance with ethical values and service standards. HSR is comprised of eight major dimensions including autonomy, dignity, confidentiality, timely attention, communicati
