RATIONALE: High-altitude polycythemia (HAPC) is a common disease in high-altitude areas characterized by excessive erythrocyte proliferation and severe hypoxemia. Recently, the incidence of ureteral calculi has risen. However, cases of ureteral calculi associated with HAPC have not been reported.
PATIENT CONCERNS: We present the cases of 2 patients (26-year-old female, Case 1; 31-year-old male, Case 2) with HAPC who were born in the lowlands and worked in areas of high altitudes. Both patients were admitted to the hospital with acute severe pain in the ureter as the first symptom.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Shockwave lithotripsy (SWL) is the least invasive treatment for ureteral calculi and is the best accepted by patients and clinicians. This prospective study was performed to evaluate the results of SWL for all ureteral calculi.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between April 1999 and May 2000, there were 150 SWL treatments for ureteral calculi at our center. All patients who completed treatment (24 females, 126 males with an average age of 54 +/- 14 years) were entered in the study and were assessed at 1 and 3 months with a plain film of the kidneys, ureters, and bladder and an ul

In a prospective fashion, transrectal ultrasonography and intravenous urography were performed in 48 patients with distal ureteral calculi. We compared the ability of the two modalities to detect calculus and to determine the size of the calculus, the degree of obstruction, and the degree of hydroureter. In 11 cases (23%), the calculus was not seen at intravenous urography, while transrectal ultrasonography detected calculus in each patient. In 37 cases in which calculi were detected by both modalities, the average diameter of the calculus determined by ultrasonography was significantly larger

Two modified helical basket extractors are described that have increased the success rate of removing ureteral calculi using fluoroscopy from 63% to 92%. Initially a rather stiff and expandable basket with a 20-cm filiform tip is used with coaxial catheters and sheath (stage 1). If this procedure is unsuccessful, a basket with two long cable ends is passed from the nephrostomy out through the urethra (stage 2). When used with coaxial bladder catheters, this technique allows dilatation of the vesicoureteric junction and retrograde catheterization and injection of fluids or gas to dislodge the s

Between November 14, 1988 and August 1, 1993, 18,825 ureteral calculi were treated in the United States using 25 different mobile and 2 fixed base Siemens Lithostar lithotriptors. Lithotripsy was performed by 1,012 urologists using the modified Puigvert technique. The overall stone-free rate was 83.8% with a retreatment rate of 10.8%. The stone-free rate varied from 85.8% with stones of 10 mm. or smaller to 67.9% for stones larger than 20 mm. A ureteral stent or catheter was placed before lithotripsy in 19.3% of all treatments and 80.7% had in situ treatment without instrumentation. For calcul

Ureteric stenting is an effective drainage method in patients with acute urinary tract infection caused by ureteral calculi; however, the optimal ureteral stent indwelling time has not been clearly defined. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of ureteric stent indwelling time on the treatment of acute infection secondary to urinary tract calculi. A total of 142 patients with acute infection caused by urinary tract calculi were identified retrospectively from January 2011 to August 2015 at our institution. 63 patients were with ureteric stenting for 7 days (A group) and 79 patients

This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of local litholytic irrigation (LLI) in the treatment of ureteral uric acid calculi. Fourteen cases of ureteral uric acid calculi were diagnosed by abdominal plain radiography (KUB), retrograde urography, ultrasonography (B-mode ultrasound), spiral computerized tomography(CT) and blood biochemical examinations. A ureteral catheter was passed retrogradely across ureteral calculi by cystoscopy. LLI with tromethamine-E (THAM-E) was performed via the ureteral catheter after the improvement of renal function and general situation and the control of u

Using the new Dornier lithotriptor MPL 9000* (multi-purpose lithotriptor) 381 treatments of urinary stones were performed from July 1988 to December 1989, 107 (28%) of them for ureteral calculi. Sonography enables stone localisation even in many cases where positioning by conventional x-ray fluoroscopy would not be possible. In 20 cases of upper ureteral stones, localization had to be performed partly by indirect measures, i.e. at the end of the dilated ureter. In 10 ureteral stones of the middle third sonographic positioning and complete disintegration was achieved. Treatment was without anae

INTRODUCTION: The Multiple primary malignant tumors (MPMT) refers to the occurrence of two primary malignant tumors in the same organ or organs in the same patient at the same time. However, MPMT is rare in the urinary system. Congenital urinary tract anomalies (e.g., duplex systems) predispose patients to recurrent infections, stones, and rare malignancies, creating diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.
CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was an elderly woman presenting with left low back pain and fever. Initial evaluation revealed left duplex kidney with ureteral malformation, complicated by up

PURPOSE: For treating proximal ureteral calculi, treatment decision has been known still difficult to choose ureteroscopic lithotripsy (URS) or shockwave lithotripsy. The aims of our study are to identify the possible predictors for necessity of URS and to propose the Gachon University Ureteral Narrowing scoring system (GUUN score) as a helpful predictor.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated 83 consecutive patients who underwent semirigid URS due to proximal ureteral calculi between April 2011 and February 2014 by a single surgeon. We reviewed patient characteristics and pre- and postoperative

PURPOSE: We aimed at comparing the success and complications of early semirigid ureteroscopy (URS) and elective URS in ureteral calculi with renal colic that do not respond to analgesics.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the data of 690 patients with obstructive ureteral stones who underwent URS with stone retrieval. 247 patients who underwent early URS within the first 12 h were classified as group I and 443 patients who underwent elective URS as group II. Both groups were compared in terms of age, sex, creatinine, eGFR, stone size, laterality, location and number of stones, type of lith

This study was prompted by a spontaneous abortion in a 21-year-old woman following extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL ) of a distal ureteral calculus. To our knowledge, it is the first clinical retrospective study on the possible adverse effects of ESWL to the female reproductive tract. We analyzed treatment data and radiation exposure of 84 women in the reproductive period, and surveyed the patients by questionnaire, to which 67 (79.8%) responded. After ESWL 57 women (85.1%) practiced some form of contraception, while 10 childless women attempted to become pregnant. Overall 7 childre

Two therapeutic methods, endourology and extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL), can be used in the treatment of ureteral calculi. In a retrospective analysis during a 2-year period 236 patients treated with endourological procedures and 71 who underwent ESWL with a Siemens Lithostar were analyzed as to the success rate, effectiveness quotient, complication rate and hospitalization. The mean stone size was 1.12 cm. in the endourology group and 1.03 cm. in the ESWL group. Complete removal of all stone fragments was achieved in 93.6% of the patients treated endourologically and without ret

The introduction of percutaneous nephrolithotomy and ureterolithotomy has greatly widened the therapeutical spectrum of urolithiasis. In this paper indications and contraindications of percutaneous stone removal will be discussed as well as techniques of this procedure. 210 percutaneous stone operations were performed after an initial training period primarily using local anesthesia (neuroleptanalgesia). This operative procedure allowed stone removal in patients otherwise inoperable because of increased operation risk or of advanced age. With increasing experience the success rate has been imp

Diagnostic accuracy in identifying calculi in patients with ureteric colic is poor. Lower ureteric calculi may be confused with other pelvic calcific opacities. A characteristic appearance of some larger lower ureteric calculi is described and likened to the root of a tooth. It is hoped that the tooth-root sign will be of assistance in the diagnosis of distal ureteric stones.
