Benign ureteral polyps causing upper urinary tract obstruction.

Ureteral fibroepithelial polyps are benign, mesodermal neoplasms that can cause upper urinary tract obstruction. The preoperative diagnosis of this disease is challenging, but multidetector computed tomography (CT), particularly CT urography in the excretory phase, can be used to detect the features of ureteral polyps. We illustrated a case preoperatively diagnosed as upper ureteral tract obstruction due to ureteral tumor based on clinical presentation and CT imaging. However, the histopathological report revealed ureteral fibroepithelial polyps. Ureteral fibroepithelial polyps should be consi

Ureteral sarcoma in a dog.

A ureteral sarcoma was diagnosed in a nine-year-old Weimaraner dog with gross haematuria, severe unilateral hydronephrosis, and hydroureter. Treatment consisted of unilateral nephrectomy and ureterectomy. This case was compared with 14 other ureteral tumours reported in the veterinary literature. Only three previous reports concerned a malignant ureteral tumour. Urinary tract neoplasms mainly involve the bladder and the kidney, and more rarely the urethra. The purpose of this paper is to report a rare case of malignant ureteral tumour in a dog.

An unusual cause of complete distal ureteral obstruction: giant fibroepithelial polyp.

Fibroepithelial polyp of the ureter is a rare benign neoplasm of mesodermal origin. It is an extremely rare cause of hydronephrosis in children. It usually causes partial ureteral obstruction without loss of renal function. The preferred treatment is endoscopic or surgical resection of the polyp with preservation of the renal unit. The authors present an adolescent patient with a nonfunctioning left hydronephrotic kidney caused by complete ureteral obstruction caused by a giant fibroepithelial polyp of the distal ureter. This is an extremely rare presentation and outcome of this benign uretera

Bilateral ureteral fibroepithelial polyps and review of the literature.

Despite being the most common forms of benign ureteral neoplasms, ureteral fibroepithelial polyps are rare and their etiology is still unknown. To our knowledge, we report the fourth case of bilateral fibroepithelial polyps in the English literature with a discussion of clinical features and etiology.

A case report of endorectal displacement of a right ureteral stent following radiochemotherapy and Bevacizumab.

BACKGROUND: The angiogenesis inhibitor monoclonal antibody Bevacizumab is presently the standard treatment for numerous neoplasms but particular toxicities are emerging, such as hypertension, haemorrhage, thromboembolism, gastrointestinal perforation, fistulae, and delayed wound healing. The addition of Bevacizumab to radio and chemotherapy has improved the overall survival rate in patients with metastatic, persistent or recurrent cervical carcinoma. However an increased risk of enteric or urinary fistula formation has been documented, related to hypoxia which is induced by the inhibition of a

Primary follicular non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the ureter: A case report and literature review.

Ureteral cancer is a rare type of neoplasm, with the most prevalent forms including squamous cell carcinoma, transitional cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. Ureteral lymphoma is particularly uncommon, and forming a pre-operative diagnosis of the disease is often difficult. The current study describes the case of a 31-year-old man presenting with a space-occupying lesion located in the left lower ureter. Follicular non-Hodgkin's lymphoma was diagnosed via intraoperative frozen section and post-operative pathological analysis. The affected ureteric segment was excised, and the ureter was repaire

Canine primary ureteral leiomyosarcoma treated with unilateral left ureteronephrectomy.

BACKGROUND: Primary ureteral neoplasms are extremely rare in dogs, and ureteral involvement usually occurs owing to the invasion of renal and bladder tumors. CASE DESCRIPTION: This case report describes a 12-year-old intact male mixed-breed dog referred to a private clinic with a six-month history of abdominal distention. A physical examination revealed mild abdominal pain. Hematological tests detected normocytic-normochromic anemia (hematocrit 33.6% [reference interval-RI: 37%-55%], red blood cells 4.93 M/µl [RI: 5.5-8.5 M/µl], and hemoglobin 12.4 g/dl [RI: 12-18.0 g/dl]). Ureteral metastases--computed tomographic findings.

CT findings in three cases of ureteral metastases are reported. Metastases to the ureter is an uncommon cause of the upper urinary tract obstruction. The most common primary sites include breast, stomach and neoplasms from pelvic organs. Radiographic studies revealed an ureteral stenosis in all the presenting cases. CT scans demonstrated a thickened regular ureteral wall at the level of the narrowing and no other abnormalities of the retroperitoneum. Such CT features suggest the possibility of ureteral metastases in a patient with the appropriate clinical setting. Histological studies, wheneve

MDCT urography of upper tract urothelial neoplasms.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of our study was to review the MDCT urography appearance of pathologically proven transitional cell carcinomas of the renal collecting system and ureter and to correlate the MDCT urography findings with pathology findings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Of 370 MDCT urography examinations performed over an 18-month period, 18 patients were diagnosed with 27 renal collecting system or ureteral urothelial neoplasms at endoscopic biopsy (n = 8) or surgery (n = 19). Initial MDCT reports were reviewed to determine the sensitivity of original reviewers in detecting these neoplasms. Tw

Urolithiasis-related ureteric intussusception: A rare case report.

Ureteral intussusception is a rare condition that historically occurs as a complication of ureteral neoplasms or iatrogenic endoscopic procedures. Although the exact mechanism of ureteral intussusception is unclear, most reported cases are due to leading points as malignant or benign masses. Urolithiasis related is rarely reported and can be challenging in stone management as it might decrease the spontaneous stone passage rate. In addition, it will increase the complexity of the endoscopic stone management. We present the second reported case of urolithiasis-related ureteric intussusception p

Fibrous polyp of the ureter.

The most frequent ureteral tumors are transitional carcinoma. Benign neoplasms are uncommon. In this paper we present 6 cases of ureteral polyps, which represent 11.1% of all the tumors in our series of ureteral tumors. We have reviewed the possible etiopathogenesis and exposed the clinical characteristics. Secondary to the obstructive phenomenon and the radiologic signs, it is the tigroid appearance, the localization and the absence of total obstruction which allows the diagnostic suspicion. The treatment of choice is partial resection. Ureterostomy with peroperatory biopsy, in cases in which

Primary carcinoma of the ureter--a 24-year-study from south India.

This study from India has envisaged a characterization of primary carcinomas of the ureter using a review of all available Indian literature over a period of 32 years. The character of the tumor in the Indian patients was clinically; pain, abdominal lump and haematuria with most neoplasms being single, situated in the ureteric pelvis and such neoplasms being squamous cell in type. The others were transitional cell carcinomas. Similar ureteric neoplasms reported from Western literature showed that the reporting authors gave the predominant complaint as haematuria alone, the neoplasm being usual

Approach to the diagnosis of bilateral ureteral transitional cell carcinoma in a cat.

A cat with bilateral ureteral obstruction and long-term urolithiasis that had been medically managed for a year was presented to the emergency department of our hospital. Severe azotemia and metabolic acidosis were identified. Ultrasonography and computed tomography supported a diagnosis of ureteral calculi, with no evidence of other underlying abnormalities. During exploratory laparotomy, irreversible renal failure secondary to bilateral ureteral obstruction was suspected, and euthanasia was elected. Histopathological and immunohistochemical examination of the ureters revealed tubulopapillary

Primary neoplasm of the ureter: a review of twenty-eight cases.

Twenty-eight patients with primary ureteral neoplasms of which 7 of a benign type were reviewed retrospectively. Sixteen of these patients underwent segmental resection, with a 2-year survival of 81% and with no ureteral recurrence. Eleven other patients underwent a complete nephroureterectomy with bladder cuff excision with a subsequent 2-year survival of 63.6%. We believe that segmental resection is indicated in all low-grade and low-stage lesions and with a small chance of recurrence.

Comparison of ureteral washing and biopsy specimens in the community setting.

BACKGROUND: Ureteral lesions can be difficult to diagnose. The value of ureteral biopsy in addition to ureteral washings has not been defined clearly. METHODS: All ureteral washings and biopsies with follow-up that were performed at a single institution were reviewed. RESULTS: In total, 39 patients underwent ureteral washing, ureteral biopsy, or both and had follow-up: Eighteen patients had urothelial tumors at follow-up (14 high-grade carcinomas, 3 low-grade carcinomas, and 1 papillary urothelial neoplasm of low malignant potential). The sensitivity was 79% for washings and 71% for biopsies

Primary carcinoma of the renal pelvis and ureter. A collective review.

During an 18-year period, 17 patients with renal pelvic and 8 with ureteral carcinoma were seen in our clinic. The lesion was transitional cell carcinoma in 23 patients, and epidermoid and anaplastic carcinoma, respectively, in 2 others. Because of frequent tumour recurrence in the lower tract, we recommend total nephroureterectomy including a cuff of the bladder as the treatment of choice for renal pelvic neoplasms. For ureteral tumours, less aggressive and conservative procedures can be considered.

[A clinical study of associated bladder cancer in patients with renal pelvic and ureteral cancer].

We reviewed 76 cases of renal pelvic and ureteral cancer, admitted to our hospital between January, 1975 and December, 1988, with special reference to the occurrence of bladder cancer. Bladder cancer was associated with an upper urinary tract neoplasm in 35 of the 76 cases (46.1%), 7 with a preceding bladder cancer, 17 with a coexistent one and 11 with a subsequent one. In case of renal pelvic and upper ureteral cancer the incidence of coexistent or subsequent tumors of the bladder was 28.7% (16 of 56 patients). However, in the cases of lower ureteral cancer the incidence of these tumors was 8

Ureteric lymphoma as a rare cause of right lower ureteric obstruction.

Primary lymphoid neoplasms of the urinary tract are exceedingly rare, with only 21 cases being reported and comprising less than 5% of all primary extranodal lymphomas. We report a case of a 45-year-old man who presented with right flank pain and weight loss, and who was found to have a stricture in the right lower ureter causing ureteral obstruction. Histopathology revealed lower ureteric non-Hodgkin lymphoma, which, on further evaluation, was found to be isolated ureteric lymphoma. The patient was doing well after six cycles of R-CHOP chemotherapy. This case is being reported as a rare cause

Radiologic evaluation of the ureteral stump.

The ureter that is left in place after nephrectomy may occasionally give rise to symptoms that are often attributed to other causes. The disease may not be recognized until it is far advanced or is discovered during surgery for another illness. Fourteen diseased ureteral stumps that became symptomatic months to years after nephrectomy are described. Calculi were found in six ureters and neoplasms in five; ureteritis cystica developed in one, infection secondary to vesicoureteral reflux in one, and empyema proximal to an obstructed ectopic ureteral orifice in another. Although there are several
