Quantifying ergonomic challenges for urologists operating flexible ureteroscopes through artificial intelligence-based posture estimation.

PURPOSE: The ergonomic challenges faced by surgeons during flexible ureteroscopy have yet to be thoroughly evaluated using objective methods. However, robot-assisted ureteroscopy has emerged as a promising treatment for urinary stones. The present study quantitatively assesses operative posture during transurethral ureteroscopy via an artificial intelligence-based posture estimation framework, and identifies kinematic differences associated with surgical expertise. METHODS: Expert and novice urologists performed standardized flexible ureteroscopic tasks in a simulated transurethral ureterosco

Comparing outcomes of single-use vs reusable ureteroscopes: a systematic review and meta analysis.

Flexible ureterolithotripsy is a frequent urological procedure, usually used to remove stones from the kidney and upper ureter. Reusable uretero-scopes were the standard tool for that procedure, but recent concerns related to sterility and maintenance and repair costs created the opportunity to develop new technologies. In 2016, the first single-use digital flexible ureteroscope was introduced. Since then, other single-use ureteroscopes were developed, and studies compared them with the reusable ureteroscopes with conflicting results. The purpose of this study is to describe the literature tha

Single-use digital ureteroscopes: which characteristics are essential for the next generation? An international survey.

PURPOSE: To assess the current use of single-use digital flexible ureteroscopes(SUDUs) and to better understand which characteristics are considered essential for the future development by current and future users. METHODS: We conducted an international, online survey comprising 23 questions, including demographics, practice patterns in stone disease, and expectations regarding 26 characteristics on SUDUs. Participants were certified urologists or in-training. After review by an expert panel, the survey was spread via social media and email and remained open from January 2026 to March 2026. R

Ureteral Strictures Following Ureteroscopic Stone Treatment.

Background and Purpose: Ureteral stricture is a rare, but serious complication following ureteroscopy (URS) for stones. The aim of this study was to investigate how many patients ended up with a ureteral stricture after URS at our hospital and how these were treated. We also wanted to identify potential risk factors for postendoscopic stricture formation. Materials and Methods: A retrospective evaluation of 1001 URSs for stone treatment at the day-case surgery unit between 2013 and 2018 was performed. Data on pretreatment status, the surgical procedure, and follow-up were recorded. Exact χ2 an

Retrograde flexible ureteroscopic approach for pyelocaliceal calculi.

INTRODUCTION: Our goal was to investigate the efficacy of flexible ureteroscopy (FU) in the treatment of pyelocaliceal calculi. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between September 2002 and December 2004, a total of 41 patients with multiple (23 cases), pelvic (7 cases), and inferior caliceal (11 cases) SWL-resistant calculi underwent FU. We used a 7.5-F flexible ureteroscope with pressure irrigation and electro-hydraulic lithotripsy. The fragments were retrieved with triradiate graspers or tipless baskets. RESULTS: A double J stent had been previously placed in 34% of the patients. Dilation of the uret

[A case of fibroepithelial polyp of the ureter resected ureteroscopically].

A case of a giant fibroepithelial polyp of the ureter is presented. A 76-year-old woman was pointed out to have a tumorus lesion in the urinary bladder by ultrasonography. Intravenous pyelography showed a filling defect in the lower portion of the left ureter and bladder. Cystoscopy revealed a tumor with a smooth surface sticking out of the left ureteral orifice. After demonstration of benign ureteral polyp without malignancy by biopsy, ureteroscopic resection was performed. The stalk of the polyp was coagulated and removed with biopsy forceps under ureteroscopy. Pathological diagnosis was a f

Ureteroscopic approach to upper-tract urothelial tumors.

Transitional-cell carcinoma (TCC) of the upper urinary tract has traditionally been managed by nephroureterectomy, whereas nephron-sparing surgery has been reserved for those few patients with solitary kidneys or bilateral lesions. However, with the introduction of improved diagnostic and therapeutic technology, including smaller ureteroscopes and working instruments, and the concomitant ease of surveillance, ureteroscopic treatment of upper-tract urothelial tumors has become a reasonable alternative to open operative intervention in patients requiring conservative management. Furthermore, as

Ureteroscopic diagnosis of intraluminal metastatic rectal carcinoma.

Ureteral obstruction resulting from metastatic adenocarcinoma is almost always extrinsic in nature. In contrast, true intraluminal metastases are extremely rare. With this report, we document the videoendoscopic appearance of true intraluminal ureteral metastases from metastatic rectal cancer confirmed with histopathologic examination. The value of transureteroscopic biopsy for accurate diagnosis is also demonstrated.

Ureteroscopic retrieval of proximally located ureteral stents.

Indwelling self-retaining ureteral stents are important for the maintenance of urinary drainage in the ureter threatened by obstruction by neoplasm, edema, or calculus. Proximal migration of the stent into the ureter prevents simple cystoscopic retrieval and necessitates removal by other techniques. In this series both rigid and flexible ureteroscopes were used to remove stents from locations ranging from the renal pelvis to the distal ureter in 16 patients. Three-pronged wire graspers was the retrieval instrument most frequently used. Stents were removed in all patients without complication.

Challenges of Retrograde Ureteroscopic Procedures in Overweight Patients.

BACKGROUND: Obesity and urolithiasis are both prevalent conditions that have an impact on the healthcare system. The ureteric diameter and accessibility play a crucial role in the management of urolithiasis in both overweight and normal weight patients. Studies have shown that obesity can lead to changes in ureter diameter where excessive body fat can exert pressure on the kidneys, causing them to enlarge in size and this enlargement can result in a compression of the adjacent structures, including the ureter. The aim of this study is to assess the incidence of intraoperative challenges faced

Transrectal Ureteroscopic Stone Management in a Patient with Ureterosigmoidostomy.

Background: Published case reports on the management of ureteral stones in patients with prior ureterosigmoidostomy have described the challenges of direct retrograde access to the ureter using standard endourologic instruments. In light of these challenges, reported effective techniques have involved either (1) direct retrograde access utilizing sigmoid endoscopy with air insufflation or (2) percutaneous antegrade access. We report the first experience of effective retrograde ureteroscopy utilizing traditional endourologic instruments in a patient without percutaneous access. Case Presentatio

Comparative performance of single-use flexible ureteroscopes with and without direct in-scope suction: a retrospective analysis.

Ureteroscopy represents the primary therapeutic approach for a broad spectrum of upper urinary tract stones. The aim of this study was to compare the efficiency of various models of single-use flexible ureteroscopes, some of them with direct in-scope suction (DISS) capabilities. A retrospective study was conducted over a 16-month period, including 75 consecutive patients who underwent retrograde intrarenal surgery for renal lithiasis. Patients were allocated into three groups according to the flexible ureteroscope used: a 7.5 Fr single-use ureteroscope without suction (Group A), a 7.5 Fr singl
