Accuracy of Urinalysis for UTI in Spina Bifida.

OBJECTIVES: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common, but overdiagnosed, in children with spina bifida. We sought to evaluate the diagnostic test characteristics of urinalysis (UA) findings for symptomatic UTI in children with spina bifida. METHODS: Retrospective cross-sectional study using data from 2 centers from January 1, 2016, to December 31, 2021. Children with myelomeningocele aged <19 years who had paired UA (and microscopy, when available) and urine culture were included. The primary outcome was symptomatic UTI. We used generalized estimating equations to control for multiple encou…

Comparative evaluation of biochemical and microscopic urinalysis.

In the present investigation, only one of 244 (0.4%) urines with abnormal microscopic findings would have been missed because of normal biochemical results of pH, protein, glucose, ketones, bilirubin, urobilinogen, hemoglobin, and leukocyte esterase. These biochemical tests detected 106 of 107 (99.1%) urines with significant microscopic findings. Sixty-three (25.8%) of 244 urines tested could have been eliminated from microscopic examination based on the negative results of the biochemical screen.

Urinalysis and urine culture in women with dysuria.

In caring for women with acute dysuria, clinicians traditionally have relied on clinical findings to distinguish between acute pyelonephritis and "cystitis"; they have ordered urinalysis and urine culture regularly for patients with suspected acute pyelonephritis and ordered these tests inconsistently for patients with suspected "cystitis." Recent evidence indicates that "cystitis" may actually be any of six different clinical conditions, each of which is managed differently; subclinical pyelonephritis, lower urinary tract bacterial infection, chlamydial urethritis, other forms of urethritis, …

Self-control with urinalysis in juvenile diabetes.

Urinary glucose excretion reflects the blood glucose levels and is therefore recommended and used as a relevant and practical method for self-control in juvenile diabetes. The purpose of this study was to estimate the attitudes of diabetic children and their parents towards such daily urinalysis. In 1975 69 juvenile diabetics 6--18 years old and their parents were studied and three years later another 69 patients were added. Standardized interviews and questionnaires were used. Only 3 out of 138 patients refused to test their urine regularly and to write down their results in the diary. The re…

Urinalysis in the white-eared opossum (Didelphis albiventris).

To evaluate parameters and discuss findings of urinalysis conducted in non-captive, clinically healthy adult white-eared opossums (Didelphis albiventris). Twenty-five urine samples from different animals were analyzed: 15 from males and 10 from females, 14 obtained by spontaneous urination and 11 by cystocentesis. The analyses included physical, chemical, and sediment examinations. The results showed that 88% of the urine samples were citrine yellow, with urine specific gravity ranging from 1.019 to 1.084 and pH between 6 and 7. In the chemical analysis, there was no colorimetric reaction for …

[Urinalysis in patients at the early stage of acute pancreatitis].

Urinalysis is a routine and cheap laboratory test that provides clinically useful information in patients with acute abdominal conditions, including acute pancreatitis. The aim of the study was to assess the relationships between the results of urinalysis and the course of the disease among 65 patients with acute pancreatitis (34 men and 31 women, mean age 61 ± 19 years) at the early phase of the disease, i.e. during the first 72 hours from the onset of symptoms. Mild acute pancreatitis was diagnosed in 47 patients, moderately severe in 13 and severe in 5. The most prevalent abnormalities were…

Urinalysis: case presentations for the primary care physician.

Urinalysis is useful in diagnosing systemic and genitourinary conditions. In patients with suspected microscopic hematuria, urine dipstick testing may suggest the presence of blood, but results should be confirmed with a microscopic examination. In the absence of obvious causes, the evaluation of microscopic hematuria should include renal function testing, urinary tract imaging, and cystoscopy. In a patient with a ureteral stent, urinalysis alone cannot establish the diagnosis of urinary tract infection. Plain radiography of the kidneys, ureters, and bladder can identify a stent and is preferr…

Role of routine urinalysis in asymptomatic pediatric patients.

This study was done to evaluate the spectrum of diagnoses and identify risk factors for significant kidney disease in asymptomatic children with proteinuria and/or microhematuria detected by routine urinalysis. Clinical and laboratory data were obtained by retrospective chart review of 239 patients referred to a tertiary care center. The predominant diagnosis in children with isolated microhematuria was hypercalciuria and with isolated proteinuria, orthostatic proteinuria. When microhematuria and proteinuria were present in combination, kidney disease was the predominant diagnosis. Urinalysis …

Urinalysis and urinary tract infection: update for clinicians.

Dysuria is a common presenting complaint of women and urinalysis is a valuable tool in the initial evaluation of this presentation. Clinicians need to be aware that pyuria is the best determinate of bacteriuria requiring therapy and that values significant for infection differ depending on the method of analysis. A hemocytometer yields a value of > or = 10 WBC/mm3 significant for bacteriuria, while manual microscopy studies show > or = 8 WBC/high-power field reliably predicts a positive urine culture. In cases of uncomplicated symptomatic urinary tract infection, a positive value for nitrites …

Interference of herbal drinks with urinalysis for drugs of abuse.

Recently there have been claims among drug users that some herbal drinks interfere with urinalysis for drugs of abuse and yield false positive results. Proof of such claims has yet to be shown. Screening for drugs of abuse is usually carried out using fluorescence polarization immunoassay (FPIA) or thin-layer chromatography (TLC). Fifty herbal samples which are considered among the most purchased herbs in the consumer market were used to investigate such claims. The drug groups that were tested for included amphetamines, opiates, barbiturates, cocaine metabolite, methadone, and their analogs. …
