Is there a promoting role for artificial sweeteners in the evolution of bladder cancer? A meta-analysis of current literature.

INTRODUCTION: Urinary bladder cancer is a frequent neoplasia in the urogenital system. Ageing and smoking are the two main risk factors, however, some chemical agents such as artificial sweeteners could act as initiators or promoters. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: After identifying trends in scientific literature, we conducted a wide search in PubMed database and a meta-analysis was performed on extracted data to determine the role of artificial sweeteners in the development of urinary bladder cancer. EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS: Twenty-one full reports were enrolled from screening of PubMed database into fi

Urinary bladder paraganglioma presenting as micturition-induced palpitations, dyspnea, and angina.

BACKGROUND: Sympathetic urinary bladder paragangliomas are rare catecholamine-secreting neuroendocrine tumors arising from neural crest cells. They are uncommon urinary bladder neoplasms. Symptoms classically include micturition-related or unrelated palpitations and syncope with hypertension, headaches, diaphoresis, and hematuria. Other than being attributable to vasovagal reactions, micturition-induced cardiovascular symptoms should prompt a search for catecholamine-secreting tumors such as a urinary bladder paraganglioma, as in this case. CASE REPORT: A 45-year-old asthmatic African-America

Bladder cancer in cancer patients: population-based estimates from a large Swedish study.

BACKGROUND: This study quantified the risk of urinary bladder neoplasms in cancer patients taking into account the age at first diagnosis, the gender of the patients and the lead time between diagnoses. METHODS: We used standardised incidence ratios (SIRs) to compare the incidence of bladder tumours in 967 767 cancer patients with the incidence rate in the general Swedish population. A total of 3324 male and 1560 female patients developed bladder tumours at least 1 year after first cancer diagnosis. RESULTS: After bladder and renal pelvis cancers, the SIRs of bladder neoplasms were higher in

Urinary Tract Cytology.

Cytologic evaluation of the urinary tract can be diagnostically rewarding in cases of renomegaly or when discrete kidney or bladder masses are identified. Cytology can often help to distinguish between cystic, inflammatory, and neoplastic disorders. Various types of cystic and benign urinary tract lesions, diseases associated with urinary tract inflammation, and the cytologic differences between primary and metastatic neoplasms of the kidney and bladder are described. Basic sampling techniques for urinary tract cytology are also discussed.

MALT Lymphoma of the Urinary Bladder Shows a Dramatic Female Predominance, Uneven Geographic Distribution, and Possible Infectious Etiology.

Extranodal marginal zone lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT lymphoma) of the urinary bladder is an extremely rare entity accounting for 0.2% of all malignant urinary bladder neoplasms, and the diagnosis could be challenging. We present here a patient with urinary bladder MALT lymphoma and review of all published case reports in the literature. We summarized the reported immunophenotype of the neoplasm, ancillary studies, therapy, and follow-up for all 59 patients in the table. The median patients' age was 57 years-old (range, 17 to 88), with female predominance in 50 of 59 pat

Mucinous adenocarcinoma of the urinary bladder after long-term duodeno-renal and colovesical fistula--case report.

Primary adenocarcinoma of the urinary bladder is a rare neoplasm. It accounts for 1-2% of all bladder carcinomas and sometimes may be found in the bladder diverticula. Fistula between duodenum and renal pelvis is another rarity while colovesical fistula is not so uncommon. We present a case of a 40 years old man who had surgery for colovesical and duodenorenal fistula and subsequently developed adenocarcinoma of the urinary bladder.

Bladder teratoma in a maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus).

BACKGROUND: Teratomas are germ cell tumors, comprised of a mixture of tissue types and with tissue foreign to their site of origin. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 5.5-year-old intact female maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) was treated for recurrent stranguria and suspected cystitis. Due to lack of resolution, the wolf was anesthetized for further evaluation. The urinary bladder was firm on palpation, with a markedly thickened wall and no observable lumen on ultrasound. Neoplastic infiltration was suspected on double contrast cystogram and confirmed via surgical exploration. The lesion was inoperable a

The pathology of urinary bladder lesions with an inverted growth pattern.

Inverted lesions in the urinary bladder have been the source of some difficulty in urological pathology. The two common ones are von Brunn's nests and cystitis cystic/cystitis glandularis, which are considered normal variants of urothelium. Apart from them, a number of other rare urothelial lesions with inverted growth pattern occur in the urinary bladder. Some of them are only reactive conditions, just as pseudocarcinomatous hyperplasia. Some are benign tumors, namely inverted papilloma. Whereas others are malignant neoplasms, including inverted papillary urothelial neoplasm of low malignant

Impact of schistosomiasis on urinary bladder cancer in the southern province of Saudi Arabia: review of 60 cases.

The histopathologic findings reported in 254 consecutive urinary bladder biopsies were reviewed. Evidence of urinary schistosomiasis was identified in 88 biopsies (35%) and malignant neoplasms were diagnosed in 60 cases (24%). Nine out of 60 (15%) cases of bladder cancer had urinary bladder schistosomiasis and the remaining 51 cases (85%) had no clinical evidence of schistosomiasis. Transitional cell carcinoma was the commonest type of urinary bladder cancer (70%) followed by squamous cell carcinoma (20%) adenocarcinoma (8%) and rhabdomyosarcoma (2%). The mean age of the patients included was

Glandular lesions of the urinary bladder:clinical significance and differential diagnosis.

A variety of glandular or pseudoglandular lesions may be seen in the urinary bladder, ranging from those that are entirely benign to aggressive-behaving malignant primary and secondary tumours. Lesions with minimal to no evident premalignant potential include several proliferative and reactive processes, such as cystitis cystica and cystitis glandularis, although the possibility exists for confusion of such lesions with an infiltrative neoplasm, particularly in limited biopsy specimens. Similarly, ectopic tissues of Müllerian origin may be seen occasionally in the urinary bladder and their dif

Synchronously detected secondary signet ring cell urinary bladder malignancy from the stomach masquerading as genitourinary tuberculosis.

Secondary bladder neoplasms are very rare and represent 1% of all malignant bladder tumours. Among secondary bladder tumours, metastasis from the stomach accounts for about 4% of cases. These secondary tumours are generally detected during follow-up of patients already treated for gastric cancer. We report a case of metastatic adenocarcinoma of the urinary bladder from an occult primary poorly differentiated signet ring cell type gastric carcinoma masquerading clinically as genitourinary tuberculosis. Our case illustrates the importance of obtaining a bladder biopsy in suspected chronic inflam

PRIMARY MALIGNANT MELANOMA OF THE URINARY BLADDER: CASE REPORT.

Primary malignant melanoma of the urinary bladder is rare, with only 20 cases reported to date. We present a case of an 87-year-old woman with multiple comorbidities who presented with advanced urinary bladder neoplasm. Histopathologic analysis suggested melanoma of the urinary bladder. No previous or concurrent diagnosis of cutaneous melanoma was documented. The patient underwent transurethral resection of the tumor before and during hospitalization at our hospital but died shortly after due to widespread disease. Autopsy was not performed.

Urine and bladder washing cytology for detection of urothelial carcinoma: standard test with new possibilities.

BACKGROUND: Light microscopic evaluation of cell morphology in preparations from urine or bladder washing containing exfoliated cells is a standard and primary method for the detection of bladder cancer and also malignancy from other parts of the urinary tract. The cytopathologic examination is a valuable method to detect an early recurrence of malignancy or new primary carcinoma during the follow-up of patients after the treatment of bladder cancer. CONCLUSIONS: Characteristic cellular and nuclear signs of malignancy indicate invasive or in situ urothelial carcinoma or high-grade papillary u

Bladder Neoplasia in Pediatric Patients-A Single-Center Experience Including a Case Series.

Objective: Bladder lesions like urothelial carcinoma are rare in the first two decades of life. A biopsy of the bladder or urinary cytological examination is seldom required. Gross painless hematuria is the most relevant clinical syndrome. Methods: A retrospective analysis of surgical pathology records collected between 1984 and 2014 at our institution was performed in a search for cases of urothelial neoplasms originating within the urinary bladder in pediatric patients. Diagnoses were confirmed based on pathologic examination using the 2004 World Health Organization (WHO) classification syst

Secondary neoplasms of the bladder are histological mimics of nontransitional cell primary tumours: clinicopathological and histological features of 282 cases.

AIMS: The incidence, anatomical localization and histological appearances of secondary neoplasms of the urinary bladder are described, with emphasis on the points of distinction from primary tumours. METHODS AND RESULTS: A retrospective study of cases at the Royal Hospitals Trust yielded a total of 282 secondary bladder neoplasms, representing 2.3% of all malignant bladder tumours in surgical specimens. The commonest primary sites were the colon (21% of secondary neoplasms), prostate (19%), rectum (12%) and cervix (11%). Most tumours from these sites reached the bladder by direct spread. The
