Urodynamic testing is the study of the function of the bladder and its outlet. Geriatric patients are at greater risk for lower urinary tract dysfunction owing to age or neurologic disease, such as Parkinson disease or stroke. Although urodynamic testing may best diagnose an individual patient's bladder storage and emptying function, the tests should be tailored to answer the question being asked and the test should only be done when the outcome of the test is going to impact decision making regarding management or treatment.

The symptoms associated with voiding disorders and incontinence in female patients are notoriously misleading. Even experienced urodynamicists are unable to achieve a 50 per cent success rate for predictive diagnosis based on symptoms and physical examination in any group except pure stress incontinence. Urodynamic studies are an essential part of the investigative sequence required to make an accurate diagnosis. If this is not made, then treatment will be empirical and the success of therapy correspondingly disappointing. The advent of urodynamic investigations has allowed a more rational app

The investigation of female incontinence is incomplete without the performance of a urodynamic evaluation. A diagnosis made only on a clinical history and examination is too inaccurate to allow for the proper management of the patient. In a personal series of 100 patients only 56% of those who were ultimately considered to have stress urinary incontinence were correctly diagnosed by clinical means as opposed to 97% correct using urodynamics. A urodynamic evaluation should be performed on most female patients suffering from urinary incontinence and is essential for patients who are being consid

Characteristic alterations of urethral pressure and length occur in patients with stress urinary incontinence. Urodynamics in this group of 50 patients revealed a significant decrease in urethral functional length under the stress of bladder filling and change of position from supine to sitting. A decrease in urethral closure pressure was present in individual patients and was significant. All patients with stress urinary incontinence demonstrated a decreased ability to voluntarily increase urethral pressure and also had evidence of pressure equalization on Valsalva maneuver and coughing. INTRODUCTION: We reviewed the role of urodynamics (UDS) in the management of women with incontinence following mid-urethral sling removal (MUSR).
METHODS: Following IRB approval, women from a longitudinal database who had persistent or recurrent urinary incontinence (UI) after MUSR, desired further therapy, and subsequently underwent UDS were reviewed. Women with neurogenic bladder, obstructive symptoms without UI, urethra-vaginal fistula, anterior compartment prolapse >Stage 2, or those who had concomitant autologous sling surgery at the time of MUSR were excluded. Interval time between MUSR

Overactive bladder (OAB) is a clinical syndrome characterized by urinary urgency, frequency, and nocturia with or without accompanying urinary incontinence. Thus, using this operational definition based on symptoms at presentation, urodynamic testing is not required for an initial diagnosis of OAB. An increasing body of evidence suggests that, although there is a relationship between the urodynamic finding of detrusor overactivity and OAB, these are quite separate findings, and successful response to nonsurgical and surgical interventions for OAB does not depend on finding detrusor overactivit

The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommends that cystometry need not be performed prior to conservative therapy for incontinence in women, nor is cystometry routinely recommended in the small group of women with a clearly defined diagnosis of pure stress incontinence. This review highlights the arguments for and against this recommendation and also looks at the place of cystometry and pressure flow studies in the assessment and management of women with lower urinary tract dysfunction.

The aim of this study is to make symptomatic and urodynamic evaluation of the patients after unsuccessful primary transurethral prostatectomy (TURP). Symptom score was not significantly different before and after TURP. Voiding symptoms were improved but storage symptoms were impaired as well as a quality of life. Free flow was fairly improved after prostatectomy as well as obstruction grade. Detrusor instability and residual obstruction were the most frequently recognized factors for voiding disturbances. Secondary TURP, or bladder neck incision are indicated in only 25% of patients so it shou

PURPOSE: Urodynamic data were evaluated prospectively in symptom-free adults.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 28 men and 10 women with no history, symptoms or signs of urological disease and a mean age of 24 years were included in the study. Free flow, cystometry and pressure flow studies were performed using standard techniques.
RESULTS: A wide variation was found in all urodynamic parameters. Different and changing flow patterns, low maximum flow rate, large bladder capacity, bladder overactivity and residual urine, which are all usually considered signs of pathological conditions, were

Multichannel urodynamic evaluation combined with sphincter electromyography was done on 102 patients. Normal and abnormal activity was defined. When detrusor hyperreflexia occurred in patients with obstruction, idiopathic detrusor hyperreflexia and upper motor neuron disease there was a reflex relaxation of the pelvic floor in 52 per cent of the cases. Electromyographic evidence of dyssynergia was associated with other evidence of sphincter obstruction in 50 per cent of the patients who voided by detrusor contraction and in 9 per cent of the patients who voided by Valsalva's maneuver. A diagno

This paper gives a survey of urodynamic data that may be used for evaluating functional aspects of the bladder and its excretory tract. The different parameters are physically defined. Units of the International System are used in the dimensional formulae, which facilitates the establishment of relations between these parameters. The so-called urethral drag can be derived from the pressure law of Blasius. The calculation is as follows: urethral drag = vesical pressure/(maximum urethral discharge). This value is proportional to the true vesical resistance in a physical sense.

OBJECTIVE: The aim was too demonstrate standardized video-urodynamic study (VUDS) in children using a transurethral catheter and pressure transducers.
METHODS: Data necessary to obtain urodynamic evaluation of bladder sphincter function were gathered by concomitant measurement of bladder, urethral, and abdominal pressure. A 7F transurethral triple-lumen water-filled catheter was used for measuring the bladder and sphincter pressures and a water-filled 8F catheter connected to a pressure transducer was inserted into the rectum for pressure measurement. Cystometry was combined with fluoroscopy,

INTRODUCTION: Urodynamic studies (UDS) are essential for evaluating lower urinary tract function but are limited by patient discomfort, lack of standardization and diagnostic variability. Advances in technology aim to address these challenges and improve diagnostic accuracy and patient comfort.
AMBULATORY URODYNAMIC MONITORING (AUM): AUM offers physiological assessment by allowing natural bladder filling and monitoring during daily activities. Compared to conventional UDS, AUM demonstrates higher sensitivity for detecting detrusor overactivity and underlying pathophysiology. However, it faces

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Radical prostatectomy (RP) is the standard surgical treatment for localized prostate cancer. One of the side effects after RP impacting quality of life is urinary incontinence. Because of the impact in quality of life, more patients are seeking treatment for post-prostatectomy incontinence. Urodynamics are an important tool to help understand how prostate surgery changes bladder and urethral function. We reviewed the current literature in order to determine the role of urodynamics in post-prostatectomy incontinence.
RECENT FINDINGS: Studies have been done to demonstrate the

INTRODUCTION: Neurogenic bladder patients are at long-term risk of secondary upper urinary tract damage. Symptoms are unreliable and follow-up urodynamics is the only method of ascertaining safety of bladder pressures. This review examines the recommendations, shortcomings and utilization of existing guidelines. The evidence with regard to follow-up urodynamics in different settings relevant to neurogenic bladder is evaluated and an algorithm is proposed.
METHODS: A pubmed search was conducted for studies on follow-up urodynamics in patients with neurogenic bladder. Additional search was made

Urodynamic studies refer to any tests that provide objective information about lower urinary tract function with the goal of evaluating bladder and urethral function. Pre-operative urodynamic testing is commonly performed prior to urogynecologic procedures for urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. Although the utility of preoperative urodynamics testing before urogynecologic procedures have been challenged in the literature, the preoperative utilization of urodynamic testing in women with complex voiding dysfunction or associated conditions such as prolapse or urethral diverticulum i

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that urinary symptoms in elderly females correlate poorly with urodynamic diagnosis, which would impact on management.
METHODS: Charts of 53 consecutive females over age 80 undergoing multichannel urodynamics according to the International Continence Society standards were retrospectively analyzed.
RESULTS: Median age was 83 years. Urodynamic stress incontinence was the most common diagnosis, in 26/53 (49%). Detrusor overactivity was found in only 12 (29%) of 42 females presenting with pure storage symptoms, and reduced compliance was seen in eigh

A totally non-invasive transperineal urodynamic technique using Doppler ultrasonography has been developed. Normal urine doesn't have blood cells so urine was thought not to produce Doppler effects. However, basic studies confirmed that the decrease of pressure at high velocity (Bernoulli effects) caused dissolved gas to form microbubbles, which are detected by Doppler ultrasonography. Subjects sat and a probe was advanced via remote control to achieve gentle contact with the perineal skin. The digital uroflow data signals and the color Doppler ultrasound video images were processed on a perso
