Knowledge of somatic mutation accumulation in normal cells, which is essential for understanding cancer development and evolution, remains largely lacking. Propoxur produces bladder tumors in rats, but not other species. We analyzed formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded materials from urothelial inverted papillomas using flow-cytometric DNA analysis to investigate the intrinsic nature in terms of the malignant potentials. Presentation of a retrospective study where the reliability of computerized axial tomography (CAT) used in preoperative local diagnostic definition of 20 upper urothelium tumours (UUT) radically treated between 1985 and 1991 is analyzed. Of them, only 70% were located by CAT and, of these, only 56% (45% of total) obtained a clear correlation with their local infiltration stage. Thus, it is concluded that CAT alone is not a good method for the preoperative evaluation of UUTs, at least when it comes to indicate their likely conservative treatment.

The paper presents the results obtained from a study of 28 patients with high urothelial tumour, treated with radical surgery (total nephroureterectomy). Multivariable study of survival rates (Cox models) indicates that cellular differentiation is the most significant prognostic factor. Single variable study indicates that tumour stage has some significance mainly due to the large relationship to the degree of cellular anaplasty.

During desquamation, the cells of mouse urinary bladder epithelium undergo detachment. In this process we examined the disconnection of cell adhesion molecules. Two proteins of cell junctions were studied: ZO1 of tight junctions and desmoplakin of desmosomes. Desquamation was induced by intravesical injection of LPS, constant illumination of mouse for 96 h, application of a combination of stress hormones hydrocortisone and norepinephrine or by removal of calcium with EGTA. All the inducers caused penetration of lanthanum tracer through the tight junctions, indicating paracellular permeability.
