Myometrial dysplasia (atypical myometrial hyperplasia).

Although precursor lesions are well known for cervical and endometrial neoplasms, precursor lesions are not currently recognized for the most common tumor of the uterus-leiomyomas. Myometrial hyperplasia has been recently described and evaluated by morphometry, but its relationship to uterine leiomyomas has not been systematically explored. Myometrial dysplasia (atypical myometrial hyperplasia) has not been previously recognized. We herein report a case of myometrial dysplasia with immunostains for proliferation marker MIB-1 (Ki-67) and for p53. The paradoxical rarity of myometrial dysplasia i

Neuroendocrine small cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix.

Neuroendocrine small cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix (SCC) is a rare disease that mixes clinical and biological characteristics of both cervical neoplasms and neuroendocrine small cell cancer. The prognosis is poor and the optimal treatment has not yet been clarified. Multimodality treatment, with surgery and concurrent chemoradiation has recently been shown to improve local control and survival rates.

NTRK rearranged spindle cell neoplasm of the uterine cervix: a rare case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Neurotrophic tyrosine receptor kinase (NTRK) rearranged spindle cell neoplasm is an emerging group of molecularly defined rare soft tissue tumors, often presenting with a monotonous spindle cell morphology, infiltrative growth, and co-expression of S-100 and CD34 proteins by immunohistochemistry (IHC). Accurate diagnosis necessitates the combination of morphology, immunohistochemistry, and molecular test results, with next-generation sequencing (NGS) as the gold standard. We present a rare case of NTRK rearranged spindle cell neoplasm of the uterine cervix and review the literature

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and intraepithelial neoplasia and invasive cancer of the uterine cervix: a case-control study in Zaragoza, Spain.

INTRODUCTION: The raw incidence of cancer of the uterine cervix is Spain is 7,8 per 100.000 inhabitants (adjusted incidence is 5.6). The incidence of this tumor is still low, but a steady increase has been seen, probably related to increasing risk factors. AIM: To determine the frequency of infection by different types of human papillomavirus (HPV) in Papanicolau smears from women with and without cancer of the uterine cervix in Spain. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A case-control study was performed in women with and without cervical cancer from Zaragoza, Spain. Pap smears from 600 cases (540 women

Large subserous uterine leiomyoma presenting as intraabdominal tumor: A case report.

Uterine leiomyomas are common benign gynecological tumors due to the overgrowth of uterine smooth muscle. Pedunculated uterine leiomyoma occurs when the mass is in continuity with the uterus with a stalk and may grow either within the uterine cavity or outside of the uterus and may mimic ovarian neoplasms or intraabdominal tumors. Presented is a 28-year-old woman with a progressive abdominal swelling in the past 9 months seen at the surgical outpatient of our facility. Preoperative CT suggested a diagnosis of an intrabdominal cystic. She had laparotomy and was offered myomectomies on account o

Total abdominal hysterectomy after radiation therapy for cervical cancer: use of omental graft for fistula prevention.

Abdominal hysterectomy after treatment of cervical cancer by radiation therapy is associated with a significant rate of postoperative vesicovaginal fistulas. In this series, five patients with invasive cancer of the cervix treated by radiation therapy developed new cervical or uterine neoplasms 1 to 27 years after treatment. All underwent abdominal hysterectomy without postoperative fistula formation. Success is attributed to cautious surgical technique and to the use of the omental pedicle graft to bring new vascularity to the vaginal apex and bladder base. The technique of forming an omental

The Value of DICER1 Mutation Analysis in "Subtle" Diagnostically Challenging Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcomas of the Uterine Cervix.

Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the uterine cervix is a rare neoplasm which is almost invariably associated with pathogenic somatic or germline DICER1 mutations; patients with germline mutations have DICER1 syndrome. We report 2 subtle cervical embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, one occurring in a 21-yr-old woman with a known history of DICER1 syndrome and the other in a 19-yr-old woman with no history of DICER1 syndrome or DICER1-associated neoplasms. Both neoplasms focally involved otherwise benign endocervical polyps and were characterized histologically by subtle areas of increased stromal cellular

p16 expression in the female genital tract and its value in diagnosis.

p16 is a cyclin-dependent kinase-4 inhibitor that is expressed in a limited range of normal tissues and tumors. In recent years, immunohistochemistry with p16 antibodies has been used as a diagnostic aid in various scenarios in gynecologic pathology. Diffuse (as opposed to focal) positivity with p16 in the cervix can be regarded as a surrogate marker of the presence of high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV). In cervical squamous lesions, p16 is positive in most high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and in some cases of low-grade CIN, usually those associated with high-risk HPV. p16

Uterine PEComa initially misdiagnosed as a leiomyoma: Sonographic findings and review of the literature.

Perivascular epithelioid cell neoplasms (PEComas) are rare mesenchymal tumors with malignant potential that arise from gynecological organs in up to 25% of cases. The lack of data regarding the preoperative US features of uterine PEComas is reflected by the frequent misdiagnosis with leiomyomas. We describe the sonographic appearance of a richly vascularized cervical PEComa mimicking a myoma and report the analysis of six additional cases in the literature with a description of their ultrasound features. Most cases involved a single lesion arising from the uterine cervix with a rapid growth pa

[Heterologous mesodermal adenosarcoma of the endocervix. Description of a clinical case].

We describe a case of an endocervical heterologous mesodermal adenosarcoma, found in a 43 year old woman. Among mesodermal neoplasms, various histological types are distinguished: the carcinosarcoma, the embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma or botryoid sarcoma, and the adenosarcoma; the last is formed by a benign epithelial component and by a malignant stromal component, that may contain heterologous tissues, such as cartilage, skeletal muscle, etc. Adenosarcoma is a tumor of the uterine corpus and seems to be most common among menopausal women. A primitive adenosarcoma of the uterine cervix is very rar

Uterine rhabdomyosarcoma complicated by cerebral venous thrombosis and uterine inversion in a young woman: case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Uterine rhabdomyosarcoma is an extremely rare malignant tumor that usually affects young women and has a poor prognosis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 19-year-old nulliparous woman presented to the emergency department under sedation due to seizures. Imaging examination revealed cerebral venous thrombosis. During thrombolytic therapy, she developed vaginal bleeding followed by uterine inversion secondary to uterine rhabdomyosarcoma. The inverted uterus was mistaken for a cervical tumour and was removed vaginally. The patient's disease progressed despite chemotherapy with vincristine, actin

Mullerian adenosarcoma accidentally detected and coexisting with cervical carcinoma in situ: a rare case report.

Mullerian adenosarcoma is rare, usually found in the uterine corpus and rarely in the cervix. Adenosarcoma that grows diffusely in the uterine cavity and the cervical canal is even rarer without symptoms. Herein, we report a rare case of multiple primary malignant neoplasms of Mullerian adenosarcoma accidentally detected and coexisting with cervical carcinoma in situ. Fortunately, the tumor was in the early stage and the Mullerian adenosarcoma was treated together with the cervical carcinoma in situ by hysterectomy + bilateral adnexectomy. Histopathology and immunohistochemistry results confir

Divergent expression of L-type amino acid transporter 1 during uterine cervical carcinogenesis.

L-type amino acid transporter 1 (LAT1) is a Na⁺-independent neutral amino acid transporter that has an essential role in cell proliferation. Although LAT1 expression is observed in various tumor cell lines and immunohistochemical expression of LAT1 has been investigated in carcinomas of various organs, LAT1 expression in uterine cervical neoplasm has not been reported. Therefore, in the present study, we immunohistochemically analyzed LAT1 expression along with the well-known markers of cervical carcinogenesis Ki-67 and p16 in normal uterine cervical mucosa (49 specimens) as well as cervical i

Benign mixed Müllerian (duct) vaginal tumor in a 12-y-old goat.

In human and veterinary medicine, mixed Müllerian tumors (MMTs) are rarely diagnosed neoplasms of the tubular female genital tract. Although there are case reports of malignant MMTs in various species, benign MMTs have only been described once in a macaque. Here we present a case of benign MMT in a 12-y-old goat, and review the literature on uterine, cervical, and vaginal neoplasia in goats. The doe was presented with vaginal discharge and was euthanized because of the high suspicion of intraabdominal neoplasia. On gross examination, an ulcerated vaginal mass was identified. Histologically, 2

Eight cases of malignant mixed Müllerian tumor (carcinosarcoma) of the uterus: findings in SurePath™ cervical cytology.

Malignant mixed Müllerian tumor (MMMT)/carcinosarcoma is a rare neoplasm of the female genital tract characterized by a mixture of epithelial and mesenchymal components. There are published reports of conventional cervical smear findings in uterine MMMT, but to the best of our knowledge the cytomorphology of MMMT in SurePath™ liquid-based cytology samples has not been described. We present a series of eight cases of uterine MMMT in SurePath™ cervical samples. The mean age of the women was 65.5 years (range, 60-82 years) and the most common presenting symptom was postmenopausal bleeding. Three

The uterus: in vitro MR-anatomic correlation of normal and abnormal specimens.

Magnetic resonance (MR) images of 12 fresh uterine specimens obtained with a high-resolution surface coil were correlated with findings on gross and microscopic pathologic examination. The uterine wall can be differentiated into three distinct zones: a central high-intensity zone, a junctional low-intensity band, and a peripheral medium-intensity area. Whereas the endometrium (basale and functionale) corresponded to the high-intensity zone, the myometrium correlated best with the combined width of the areas of low and medium signal intensity. The signal intensity of a leiomyoma varied, dependi

[Synchronous occurrence of four malignancies in a 55-year-old woman with uterine cervical cancer. Case report and review of literature].

Multiple primary malignancies are no longer rare in clinical practice. The incidence of multiple primary malignant neoplasms is the consequence of progress in oncological treatment and diagnostic methods, as well as the higher overall survival rate and life expectancy rate. We present a case of a patient who synchronously developed four malignancies: cervical cancer, breast cancer, chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL/SLL) and an olfactory groove meningioma. This case proves that the diagnosis of the cervical cancer does not exclude the occurrence of other malignancies.

Uterine carcinomas simulating microglandular hyperplasia. A report of six cases.

Six uterine adenocarcinomas, one cervical and five endometrial, that simulated microglandular hyperplasia histologically are described. The cervical neoplasm occurred in a 34-year-old woman who had been taking oral contraceptives. The five endometrial cancers occurred in postmenopausal patients 57 to 69 years of age; two of them were receiving, or had been receiving, premarin and provera and two were receiving only premarin. The patient with the cervical neoplasm had an abnormality observed on pelvic examination. The five postmenopausal patients presented because of vaginal spotting, bleeding,

Extensive psammomatous calcification of the uterus and cervix associated with a uterine serous carcinoma.

This report describes a uterine serous carcinoma with bilateral ovarian metastasis, which was associated with widespread extensive psammomatous calcification of the uterine leiomyomata, the myometrium, and the cervical stroma. These psammoma bodies were not associated with tumour or epithelial elements. This psammomatous calcification is rare, with no previous reports of similar cases. The presence of psammoma bodies is probably related to the serous carcinoma, raising the possibility that psammoma body formation in serous carcinomas is the result of a factor secreted locally by the tumour, ra
