We reviewed 65 cases of uveal melanoma from the Shanghai Eye, Ear, Nose, and Throat Hospital between 1956 and 1979. These 65 cases occurred at a rate of 4.5 cases per 10,000 inpatients on the ophthalmology service. Uveal melanoma is more frequently encountered in China than previous reports have suggested. In China, as in the United States, uveal melanoma is the most frequently occurring primary intraocular neoplasm in adults. BACKGROUND: Acquired neoplasms arising from the nonpigmented ciliary epithelium (NPCE) are much less common than uveal melanocytic proliferations. We report two cases of acquired neoplasms arising from the NPCE with immunohistochemical findings.

A case of ciliary body neurilemmoma is described. This neoplasm is extremely rare in the uveal tract and has been reported only once in the ciliary body. After extensive clinical studies of the rapidly growing tumour enucleation was performed. Subsequent histological examination showed typical features of highly vascular benign neurilemmoma. The main clinical and pathological features are reported and diagnostic problems are discussed.

Medulloepithelioma is a type of rare primitive neuroectodermal tumour. Most medulloepitheliomas are intraocular and they have been most frequently reported in horses and dogs. Clinical observations of 7 patients with metastatic intraocular tumors are presented. The primary sites of neoplasms were breast cancer in 4 women, pulmonary cancer in 2 men and in 1 cancer of prostate. In 4 patients metastases were observed also in the anterior segment of uveal tract. Secondary retinal detachment was found in 6 cases, central retinal artery occlusion in one and ciliary artery occlusion in another one. In spite of radio--and chemotherapy 5 patients died during 1-9 months and 2 remained under clinical observation.

IMPORTANCE: Somatic mutations in BAP1 (BRCA1-associated protein 1 gene) are frequently identified in uveal melanoma. To date, the role of germline BAP1 mutations in uveal melanoma has not been characterized.
OBJECTIVE: To characterize the clinical phenotype of uveal melanoma in patients with germline BAP1 mutations.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Retrospective cohort study at an academic ophthalmology referral center among 507 patients with uveal melanoma who consented for collection of blood samples. The study dates were June 22, 1992, to December 14, 2010.

Interactions between extracellular matrix and tumor cells are of great importance for tumor cell invasion. They are mediated by cellular surface receptors (integrins). CASE REPORT: Diagnostic and therapeutic considerations in the case of a 57-year-old man with multiple iris cysts in both eyes.
COMMENTS: Small and hidden from view, most primary iris cysts of the iris pigment epithelium remain clinically silent. Larger cysts may be noted on examination, but often remain difficult to visualize due to their location. By providing a high-resolution view of the iris and ciliary body, ultrasound biomicroscopy is a useful adjunct to the clinical examination in distinguishing primary cysts of the iris pigment epithelium from solid uveal neoplasms.
