To determine the hereditary pattern of acute anterior uveitis, we examined seven families-one family with four cases, one family with three cases, and four families with two cases of acute anterior uveitis. A total of 16 patients with uveitis and 28 relatives underwent ocular examinations and serologic determination of HLA antigens, protease inhibitor alpha 1-antitrypsin typing, and X-ray examination of sacroiliac joints. Sacroiliitis was found in 11 of 16 patients (68.8%) and incomplete Reiter's disease in seven of 16 (43.8%). HLA-B27 antigen was found in all patients with uveitis and in six

The ocular and systemic characteristics of 160 patients with anterior uveitis and seronegative juvenile rheumatoid arthritis are reviewed. Chronic uveitis occurred in 131 patients, 76% of whom were girls. Both eyes were involved in 70% of the cases. Band keratopathy occurred in 41% of the eyes, cataract in 42%, and secondary glaucoma in 19%. Only 11 patients had uveitis before the onset of arthritis. Notable correlations included a pauciarticular onset of arthritis in 95% of the patients, and positive tests for antinuclear antibody in 82%. Of 29 patients with acute anterior uveitis, 27 were bo

Anterior uveitis, in which the anterior chamber is the primary site of inflammation, is the most frequently encountered form of uveitis. However, several non-neoplastic entities can closely mimic its clinical presentation, posing significant diagnostic challenges. This narrative review focuses on these non-malignant conditions that simulate anterior uveitis and may mislead clinicians in routine practice. Differentiating true inflammatory cells from pigment granules in the anterior chamber can be difficult, often leading to misdiagnosis. Disorders such as Bilateral Acute Iris Depigmentation (BA

PURPOSE: To determine the incidence of and risk factors for persistent anterior uveitis following cataract surgery.
METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of patients who underwent cataract surgery at a tertiary referral center in Connecticut, USA. Those with prior uveitis, complex ocular pathology, concurrent procedures, and surgical complications were excluded. The outcome was development of persistent anterior uveitis, defined as anterior chamber cell grade ≥ 0.5+ and steroid treatment beyond two months. Patients who did and did not develop persistent anterior uveitis were compared

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to describe the clinical features and management of uveitis associated with microsporidial keratoconjunctivitis (MKC).
METHODS: The medical records of clinically diagnosed or microbiologically proven patients with MKC between July 2016 and August 2021 were reviewed. Patients with documented evidence of keratic precipitates (KPs) or anterior chamber cells were analyzed for their demography, clinical features, and treatment. Patients with microsporidial stromal keratitis and herpes simplex virus keratouveitis were excluded from the study.
RESULTS: Of the 22

PURPOSE: Viral agents are the most common cause of infectious anterior uveitis worldwide. The purpose of this review is to analyze the frequency, gender and racial differences of viral anterior uveitis (VAU) in various populations.
METHODS: Systematized literature review of epidemiological reports of VAU cited in PubMed, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library database published until June 30th, 2020.
RESULTS: A total of 12 clinical studies on epidemiology of definite VAU and 36 clinical studies of presumed VAU were identified. Members of Herpesviridae family represent the most common causes of VAU.

Relapsing polychondritis is a potentially lethal but rare systemic autoimmune disease. The major site of inflammation is the connective tissue, usually involving the ears, nose, larynx, tracheobronchial tree, and cardiovascular system. Although scleritis and episcleritis are known to be the most probable ocular manifestation, it may also present with uveitis. We present the case of a 22-year-old young lady who initially referred with bilateral red and painful eyes caused by anterior uveitis. Her right ear was also red and painful, consistent with cartilaginous inflammation. She was diagnosed w

The viral causes of anterior uveitis (AU) emerged with the use of novel molecular diagnostic tests and serologic tests adapted for small volumes (Goldmann-Witmer Coefficient). The viral causes of AU may be underestimated, and some of the presumed idiopathic AU cases will probably be proven to be of viral origin in the coming years. So far, a viral origin of AU was suspected in patients who presented with unilateral hypertensive AU. It is not clear which clinical presentations should raise a suspicion of viral etiology. There is an overlap in the clinical manifestations of AU caused by viruses

Autoimmune uveitis is an acute, recurrent, sight-threatening disease that can lead to severe visual loss and blindness. It requires systemic immunosuppressive therapy and continuous monitoring by ophthalmologist and rheumatologist. There are no universally accepted referral patterns for the treatment of endogenous uveitis. Most specialists indicate corticosteroids, methotrexate and cyclosporine A as the first use drugs. Anti-cytokine drugs are a new opportunity for the patients unresponsive to the conventional anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive therapy.

Choroideremia is a rare hereditary disease with characteristic fundus that causes night blindness and peripheral visual field loss. The authors encounter choroideremia accompanied by recurrent uveitis. This paper is designed to give a description of the condition, along with an investigation of the literature. Ophthalmological tests and treatments were performed. Characteristic fundus, night blindness, peripheral visual field loss, electroretinography and other manifestations led us to a diagnosis of choroideremia. The anterior uveitis was managed with medication.

Up to one-half of patients with anterior uveitis suffer from related systemic diseases. The common associations are the seronegative arthropathies and, in children, juvenile chronic arthritis. Anterior uveitis may also occur in the context of sarcoidosis or Behçet's disease. Syphilis and tuberculosis remain a significant problem for specific populations and may be the cause of anterior uveitis in these groups. By thorough clinical history and the correct selection and interpretation of simple investigations, it is generally possible for the ophthalmologist to make or exclude a systemic diagnos

OBJECTIVE: To assess the possible involvement of the bowel in the spectrum of anterior uveitis (AU).
METHODS: Ileocolonoscopy and histology studies were performed on 27 patients with AU.
RESULTS: Patients with AU had a higher incidence of chronic intestinal inflammation (CII) than controls. CII was present in AU regardless of HLA-B27 status, sacroiliitis or NSAID intake, and was more prevalent in uveitis with high recurrence.
CONCLUSION: Bowl inflammation ia a component of the spectrum of AU. This finding supports a HIL-B27 independent common pathogenic link between AU and spondyloarthropat
