Vaccination is a proven, highly effective intervention to protect against potentially serious infectious diseases. UK vaccine uptake rates are high overall, but considerable variation exists within and between districts. The main reason for under vaccination is difficulty accessing vaccination services for practical or logistical reasons. While some parents decline specific vaccines, only a small minority decline them all. It is unsurprising that many parents have questions about vaccination, but most are easily addressed. This article provides practical guidance on how to engage effectively w

Vaccine hesitancy reflects concerns about the decision to vaccinate oneself or one's children. There is a broad range of factors contributing to vaccine hesitancy, including the compulsory nature of vaccines, their coincidental temporal relationships to adverse health outcomes, unfamiliarity with vaccine-preventable diseases, and lack of trust in corporations and public health agencies. Although vaccination is a norm in the U.S. and the majority of parents vaccinate their children, many do so amid concerns. The proportion of parents claiming non-medical exemptions to school immunization requir

We know that vaccine hesitancy is closely related to distrust in health organisations, pharmaceutical industry or governments (Vuolanto et al. 2024). At the end of the book, I am left with the question what is necessary to bridge the gap of distrust and how this relates to discussions on coercive measures. Intuitively, it seems necessary to understand the different types of distrust non-compliant parent groups have and Pierik and Verweij discuss these in Chapter 3 in order to offer tailored approaches to build trust. In Chapter 9, Pierik and Verweij discuss the lack of trust more specifically,

NEJM Catalyst Insights Council members have high confidence in vaccine efficacy and safety. Direct counseling is the top means of overcoming patient hesitancy about vaccines, and many Council members have had personal discussions with patients or parents that changed their vaccine decisions.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze elements of HPV vaccine hesitancy from the perspective of adolescents.
METHOD: Qualitative study conducted with 58 middle school students from a public school in São Paulo, developed through focus groups. Deductive content analysis was guided by the 5Cs framework of vaccine hesitancy.
RESULTS: Regarding confidence, many adolescents believed the vaccine was safe; however, boys demonstrated limited knowledge about adverse events. In terms of complacency, there was underestimation of risks and confusion about potential complications. Concerning convenience, barriers to acc

We examine the effect of Internet diffusion on the uptake of an important public health intervention: the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine. We study England between 2000 and 2011 when Internet diffusion spread rapidly and there was a high profile medical article (falsely) linking the MMR vaccine to autism. OLS estimates suggest Internet diffusion led to an increase in vaccination rates. This result is reversed after allowing for endogeneity of Internet access. The effect of Internet diffusion is sizable. A one standard deviation increase in Internet penetration led to around a 20% decr

How do attitudes toward vaccination change over the course of a public health crisis? We report results from a longitudinal survey of United States residents during six months (March 16 -August 16, 2020) of the COVID-19 pandemic. Contrary to past research suggesting that the increased salience of a disease threat should improve attitudes toward vaccines, we observed a decrease in intentions of getting a COVID-19 vaccine when one becomes available. We further found a decline in general vaccine attitudes and intentions of getting the influenza vaccine. Analyses of heterogeneity indicated that th

Vaccines have been recognized as one of the top 10 public health achievements of the 20th century. In 1998, a study on the connection between measles, mumps, rubella vaccine and autism was published by the now discredited Andrew Wakefield. That study was retracted in 2010, but the damage was already done. The purpose of this article is to review the history of vaccine hesitancy and discuss a successful paradigm for speaking with vaccine-hesitant parents. Discussion of immunizations related to public health law and religious exemptions will also be reviewed.

The opposition to vaccinations is a well-known phenomenon that dates back to the Victorian age when it was self-limited by the awareness of the importance to be protected against fearsome infectious diseases. In the XX century, the mass use of vaccination has - instead - consented to eradicate or drastically reduce the burden of diseases such as smallpox and polio. These positive effects of the vaccination campaigns have blurred out, if not erased, the memory of the tragic consequences of the past's widespread diseases, leading people to underestimate the severity of the harm that vaccinations

Understanding vaccine hesitancy is a critical public health challenge, yet traditional statistical methods often fail to capture the complex drivers behind it. This study uses COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy in a rural population as a case study to demonstrate a more powerful and interpretable machine learning workflow. We compared seven models and found that non-linear approaches significantly outperformed logistic regression in predictive accuracy. Interpretation of the best-performing model identified vaccine safety perceptions as the most important predictor. This approach revealed nuanced, non

Measles remains a highly contagious and potentially severe infectious disease, necessitating high vaccine coverage. However, misinformation and measles vaccine hesitancy/resistance have posed significant challenges to achieving this goal. The COVID-19 pandemic further exacerbated these challenges, leading to a measles outbreak in Jordan in 2023. This study aimed to investigate the acceptance of the measles rubella (MR) vaccine among parents in Jordan and to identify its associated determinants. This cross-sectional questionnaire-based study was conducted using a previously Arabic-validated ver

Physician hesitancy is said to occur when physicians do not recommend COVID-19 vaccination, and it is a contributing factor for the low vaccination rate for COVID-19 in pregnant women. Physician hesitancy has become a major, unaddressed problem with regard to the quality and safety of obstetrical care. We identify 3 root causes of physician hesitancy and describe how professional ethics in obstetrics should guide in reversing these root causes. They are clinical misapplications of key components of professionally responsible obstetrical practice: therapeutic nihilism, shared decision-making, a

Dengue vaccines face significant challenges, including safety concerns, which contribute to vaccine hesitancy. Addressing this complex issue requires targeted strategies to overcome existing barriers. Through an extensive review of current evidence, we identified key factors contributing to vaccine hesitancy and explored strategies to enhance global vaccine uptake. Four conceptual models and five assessment tools were identified to understand and measure vaccine hesitancy. Among the factors, "confidence" emerged as the most influential, followed by "complacency." Vaccine acceptance rates varie

Vaccine hesitancy threatens global health by diminishing herd immunity and permitting the return of vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) including poliomyelitis, measles and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). These infections carry short-term and long-term musculoskeletal consequences, such as paralysis, limb deformities, septic or reactive arthritis, osteomyelitis and chronic pain, that place an ever increasing burden on orthopaedic services. This narrative review synthesizes clinical and epidemiological evidence linking sub-optimal immunization to orthopaedic morbidity caused by major VPDs.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Development of vaccines that protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including for chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis, has progressed greatly over the past decade. However, little research has been conducted to examine STI vaccine acceptance and hesitancy and how these factors may impact future uptake. This review examines literature that could provide additional insights into factors that would impact STI vaccine acceptance and hesitancy.
RECENT FINDINGS: Vaccine hesitancy remains a threat to the uptake of future STI vaccines despite recent findings that hi

BACKGROUND: Addressing parental vaccine hesitancy may increase adolescent vaccination acceptance. However, no validated measure exists to identify parents hesitant toward adolescent vaccines.
OBJECTIVE: To determine if a modified version of the Parent Attitudes about Childhood Vaccines (PACV) survey, a previously validated tool to identify parental hesitancy toward vaccines in infants, predicts adolescent vaccine uptake at office visits.
METHODS: We modified the PACV for use in the adolescent setting and distributed it to a convenience sample of parents of adolescents aged 11 to 17 presentin

OBJECTIVE: To modify an existing parent-administered Vaccine Hesitancy Scale to create a teen Vaccine Hesitancy Scale (tVHS) capturing vaccine hesitancy among adolescents.
METHODS: We conducted a nationally representative survey of 725 parent-teen dyads to test and validate the tVHS. We performed exploratory factor analysis (EFA) to identify the latent structure of the tVHS, followed by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to confirm factor structure. We conducted structural equation modeling (SEM) to assess correlations between factors and vaccine intention (i.e., influenza/flu, HPV, COVID-19,
