Peribronchial Connective Tissue Infection Caused by Bifidobacterium longum and Veillonella Species Mimicking Lung Cancer.

An 86-year-old woman was admitted for the investigation of atelectasis of the upper lobe of her right lung with a mass shadow in the hilum (Golden S sign). Chest computed tomography revealed swollen connective tissue around the right bronchus, and needle aspirate grew Bifidobacterium longum and Veillonella species. She was diagnosed with peribronchial connective tissue infection, and her condition improved with antibiotics. Although this sign is strongly suggestive of malignant disease, benign disease should be considered in the differential diagnosis. Pulmonary infection caused by Bifidobacte

Overabundance of Veillonella parvula promotes intestinal inflammation by activating macrophages via LPS-TLR4 pathway.

Hirschsprung's disease-associated enterocolitis (HAEC) is the most common complication of Hirschsprung's disease (HSCR). The microbiome pattern of intestinal flora in HAEC patients was significantly abnormal compared to that in HSCR patients. The overabundance of V. parvula was detected in the gut of HAEC patients. To elucidate the pathological mechanisms of the overabundance of V. parvula, we established and analyzed inflammatory models induced by LPS or single-bacterial strain transplantation in vivo. The transplantation of V. parvula induced inflammatory response in the colon of mice. Besid

Relative presence of Streptococcus mutans, Veillonella atypica, and Granulicatella adiacens in biofilm of complete dentures.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVE: Oral biofilms in denture wearers are populated with a large number of bacteria, a few of which have been associated with medical conditions such as sepsis and infective endocarditis (IE). The present study was designed to investigate the relative presence of pathogenic bacteria in biofilms of denture wearers specifically those that are associated with IE. METHODS: Biofilm samples from 88 denture wearers were collected and processed to extract total genomic DNA. Eight of these samples were subjected to 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis to first identify the general bacteria

Gut microbiome modulation by Veillonella ratti induces resistance to EAE pathogenesis via microbe-derived metabolites.

The progression of multiple sclerosis (MS) is potentially influenced by the microbiome. Elucidating host-microbiome interactions in MS may aid in developing microbiome-based applications; however, these interactions remain unclear. Here, we aimed to elucidate how Veillonella ratti MHL0042, isolated from human infant feces, modulates neuroinflammation and disease severity in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis, a murine MS model. Whole metagenomic sequencing revealed that V. ratti MHL0042 reshaped disrupted gut microbiota via microbial interactions throughout the intestinal tract. V. ratt

Utility of Veillonella parvula polymerase chain reaction in diagnosing aspiration pneumonia: a prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Aspiration pneumonia is a critical concern, particularly in older adults with comorbidities. Micro-aspiration is often underdiagnosed due to the lack of precise diagnostic tools. This study evaluated the utility of anaerobic PCR for Veillonella parvula compared with traditional diagnostic methods for predicting aspiration pneumonia. METHODS: This prospective observational case-control study included patients with new-onset acute respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation in intensive care units (ICUs) at a Taiwan medical centre (2022-2024). Emerging liver infection of Veillonella parvula associated with acute respiratory distress syndrome: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Veillonella parvula is a bacteria that can be found in normal oral and gastrointestinal flora. Veillonella infection is rare in immunocompetent patients but is known to cause periorbital cellulitis, endocarditis, osteomyelitis and bacteremia; however, its association with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) has not been previously documented. CASE PRESENTATION: A 36-year-old female with no known history who presented with right-sided chest, flank and upper abdominal pain after a motor vehicle accident. Computed tomography showed multiple right rib fractures, small right p

The role of Veillonella species in oral carcinogenesis: is prevalence linked to oral squamous cell carcinoma?

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) remains a significant health challenge because of its aggressive nature and poor survival outcomes. While established risk factors such as tobacco use, alcohol consumption, and human papillomavirus play critical roles, increasing evidence suggests that oral microbial dysbiosis may contribute to carcinogenesis. Among oral commensals, Veillonella species have gained attention because of their ecological role in oral biofilms and metabolic interactions with other microbes, and have also been increasingly identified in altered abundances within OSCC patient samp

Veillonella parvula as a Causative Agent of Discitis: Insights from a Clinical Case and Literature Overview.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Veillonella species are Gram-negative, non-motile, non-fermentative, obligate anaerobic cocci. They are typically considered commensals of the oral cavity, respiratory tract, genitourinary tract, and gastrointestinal tract. It may be a rare cause of dental infections and discitis/spondylodiscitis. METHODS: We report the case of an 80-year-old patient diagnosed with discitis caused by Veillonella parvula, isolated from blood. In addition, we performed a comprehensive literature review summarizing all reported cases of discitis or spondylodiscitis caused by Veillonella sp

Lipopolysaccharide-producing Veillonella infantium and Escherichia fergusonii cause vagus nerve-mediated cognitive impairment in mice.

Gut microbiota communicates bidirectionally with the brain through the nervous, immune, and endocrine systems of the gut. In our preliminary study, the fecal microbiota of volunteers with mild cognitive impairment (Fmci) exhibited a higher abundance of Escherichia fergusonii (NK2001), Veillonella infantium (NK2002), and Enterococcus faecium (NK2003) populations compared with those of healthy volunteers. Therefore, we examined the effects of Fmci, NK2001 (gram-negative), NK2002 (gram-negative-like), and NK2003 (gram-positive) on cognitive impairment-like behavior, neuroinflammation, and colitis

Non-vertebral Veillonella species septicemia and osteomyelitis in a patient with diabetes: a case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Veillonella is a nonfermentative, strictly anaerobic, Gram-negative coccus that forms part of the human gastrointestinal tract, mouth and vaginal flora. Like other anaerobic infection, Veillonella species usually are involved in polymicrobial processes, which make it difficult to determine their pathogenic role. Isolation of a clinically significant Veillonella species is rare and V. parvula is the most common one reported to cause infection in humans. The most frequently reported infection caused by V. parvula is osteomyelitis, almost always in association with bacteremia. CASE

Modified gegen qinlian decoction ameliorates Veillonella parvula-exacerbated ulcerative colitis via restoration of intestinal mucosal barrier function.

INTRODUCTION: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is being increasingly connected to the pathogen Veillonella parvula (V. parvula). Modified Gegen Qinlian Decoction (MGQD), a traditional Chinese medicine therapy, is used to treat UC. However, the underlying mechanism by which V. parvula exacerbates UC and whether MGQD can alleviate it is unknown. METHODS: MGQD therapy was tested on pathogen-free and pseudo-germ-free mice infected with V. parvula. Colitis severity was determined by disease activity index, colon length, and histology. Transmission electron microscopy, Western blot, immunofluorescence, and

Differential presence of Campylobacter rectus and Veillonella spp. in pediatric appendicitis: a comparison of emergency and elective surgery cases.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric appendicitis is increasingly recognized as involving dysbiosis of the appendiceal microbiota rather than purely mechanical obstruction. Clinical strategies now include emergency appendectomy and elective surgery after conservative antibiotic therapy, often dictated by institutional policy rather than standardized disease staging. Whether distinct microbial signatures characterize children managed by different surgical pathways remains unclear. This study examined oral and appendiceal microbiota-particularly Campylobacter rectus and Veillonella spp.-and their association w

Veillonella parvula acts as a pathobiont promoting the biofilm virulence and cariogenicity of Streptococcus mutans in adult severe caries.

Adult severe caries (ASC) brings severe oral dysfunction and treatment difficulties to patients, and yet no clear pathogenic mechanism for it has been found. This study is focused on the composition of dental plaque microbiome profiles in order to identify disease-relevant species and to investigate into their interactions with the S. mutans. Samples of dental plaque were collected for metagenomic analysis. The acidification, aciduricity, oxidative stress tolerance, and gtf (glucosyltransferase) gene expression of S. mutans cocultured with V. parvula which was identified as ASC-related dominan

Veillonella parvula outer membrane vesicles increase ICAM-1+ neutrophils exhibiting elevated NET formation via ROS-PAD4 signaling.

BACKGROUND: Veillonella parvula (V. parvula), as an anaerobic Gram-negative coccus, produces outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) to promote bacterial colonization and periodontitis progress. Neutrophils are the first immune cells during bacterial stimulation, while neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are the early triggers in the progress of periodontitis. However, the interactions between neutrophils and V. parvula are still unknown. Therefore, this study investigated the effects and underlying mechanisms of V. parvula OMVs on neutrophils. METHODS: Neutrophil migration, apoptosis, and phagocyto

Role of Oral Veillonella Species in Predicting Surgical Site Infections After Maxillofacial Trauma: A Prospective Observational Study.

INTRODUCTION: There are comparatively fewer surgical site infections after craniofacial trauma than after trauma to the extremities, and the etiology is complex. Gram-negative facultative anaerobic bacteria Veillonella is a common commensal in the oral cavity and has been linked to osteomyelitis and surgical site infections in prosthetic joint infections. They serve as early biological indicators. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: This study aims to assess the presence of Veillonella in patients presenting with maxillofacial trauma, to document the difference in colony count in patients requiring surgical int

Polymicrobial bacteremia due to Lactobacillus jensenii and Veillonella montpellierensis in a pregnant patient; case report and review of literature.

Prompt and accurate diagnosis of polymicrobial bacteremia, which causes the difficulty in anti-infective treatments, poor treatment outcome and high mortality, is essential for initiating effective antimicrobial therapy. Here we present a case of bacteremia caused by two types of uncommon bacteria, Lactobacillus jenseniand and Veillonella montpellierensis in a 29-year-old pregnant woman at 33 weeks of gestation with anemia due to iron deficiency. She had no comorbidity or other chronic illnesses and was successfully treated with appropriate antibiotic use.

Gut metagenomic analysis of gastric cancer patients reveals Akkermansia, Gammaproteobacteria, and Veillonella microbiota as potential non-invasive biomarkers.

The goal of the study was to investigate the changes in the gut microbiota during the advancement of gastric cancer (GC) and identify pertinent taxa associated with the disease. We used a public fecal amplicon gastric cancer dataset from the Sequence Retrieval Archive (SRA), of patients with GC, gastritis, and healthy individuals. We did sequence pre-processing, including quality filtering of the sequences. Then, we performed a diversity analysis, evaluating α- and β-diversity. Next, taxonomic composition analysis was performed and the relative abundances of different taxa at the phylum and ge
