Persistent left superior vena cava.

Congenital venous anomalies are relatively common and some have clinical implications. An example of persistent left superior vena cava was found during a routine dissection. This vein was carefully dissected and followed to its termination in the right atrium. The same cadaver also presented four branches from the arch of the aorta. A left superior vena cava occurs in early development but disappears later. The clinical significance of such a persistent left superior vena cava assumes importance during cardiac catheterization via the left subclavian vein.

[Accessory left superior vena cava].

The authors conducted contrast study of the position of the cavacatheter in all patients treated in the period of 12 months in the thoracic surgery department and the anesthesiology-resuscitation department who required long-term intensive therapy. In 61 of these patients the catheter was introduced through the left subclavian vein. An accessory left superior vena cava (ALSVC) which drained through the coronary sinus into the right atrium was found in 3 patients (4.9%). Study of the anatomical features of this venous anomaly led to the conclusion that prolonged infusion therapy through an ALSV

Absent right superior vena cava.

A patient is presented in whom pulmonary artery catheter insertion fortutiously demonstrated persistent left superior vena cava on two separate occasions. Further studies with venogram and a first pass nuclear scan demonstrated total absence of the right superior vena cava. Although this anomaly is commonly associated with intracardiac defects and rhythm disturbances only the latter was seen in our patient. Invasive hemodynamic monitoring is frequently performed in the majority of modern intensive care units. The bedside technique used for insertion of a Swan-Ganz catheter using only pressure

[Persistent left superior vena cava, absence of the right superior vena cava and tricuspid regurgitation].

The persistence of a left superior vena cava in the general population represents one of the most frequent thoracic venous return malformations, however its association with abscence of the right superior vena cava and tricuspid regurgitation are extremely rare findings.

Isolated persistent left superior vena cava with absent right superior vena cava in two cases.

Persistent left superior vena cava (LSVC) with absent right superior vena cava (RSVC) is a very rare congenital anomaly. Its isolated existence is even rarer. Persistent LSVC is usually asymptomatic and discovered incidentally. We present persistent LSVC with absent RSVC in two asymptomatic patients, namely, a 52-year-old woman and 65-year-old man. The diagnosis was confirmed by cardiac computed tomography in both cases.

Absent right superior vena cava and persistent left superior vena cava. Clinical and surgical considerations.

From 4,100 patients who had cardiac catheterization for congenital heart disease and " normocardia ", 6 were found to have a persistent left superior vena cava ( PLSVC ) and an absence of right superior vena cava ( RSVC ). Because of the rarity of this finding (1.46%) the clinical and surgical implications are considered. Four of them were successfully operated upon.
