The cowpea weevil, Callosobruchus maculatus (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Bruchidae), is a major stored-product pest. Resistance to synthetic insecticides such as dichlorvos (DDVP) has prompted interest in alternatives with distinct modes of action. This study compared multigenerational transcriptional responses of C. maculatus to DDVP and the botanical insecticide Lippia adoensis (Hochst. ex Walp.) (Lamiales: Verbenaceae) essential oil (EO). DDVP exposure was associated with progressive fitness recovery across generations, together with upregulated expression of detoxification-related genes (e.g.

Many plants are used in traditional medicine as active agents against various effects induced by snakebite. The methanolic extract from Cordia verbenacea (Cv) significantly inhibited paw edema induced by Bothrops jararacussu snake venom and by its main basic phospholipase A2 homologs, namely bothropstoxins I and II (BthTXs). The active component was isolated by chromatography on Sephadex LH-20 and by RP-HPLC on a C18 column and identified as rosmarinic acid (Cv-RA). Rosmarinic acid is an ester of caffeic acid and 3,4-dihydroxyphenyllactic acid [2-O-cafeoil-3-(3,4-di-hydroxy-phenyl)-R-lactic ac

An epidemiological study of occupational contact eczema in a furniture factory is presented. The localization, distribution, and clinical features of the skin lesions were characteristic of contact eczema caused by a sensitizing or irritating dust. True teak—Tectona grandis—was the cause of the skin condition. That teak is a fairly potent sensitizer and also contains primary irritants is fully confirmed by the present study. About half the employees who were heavily exposed to teak dust suffered from eczema and/or severe itching. Only 8% of those with slight exposure to teak dust experienced s

Plants from the Verbenaceae family may cause contact dermatitis of unknown nature. This report describes 2 cases of allergic reactions to the Verbena species. A teenage boy developed an anaphylactic allergic response following contact with the leaves of Verbena hybrida. Characterization of the patient's specific IgE response to Verbena hybrida, using Western blots and autoradiography, identified the specific 62000 Dalton allergen present in the verbena leaves to which the patient reacted. This is the first report of an IgE-mediated immediate contact hypersensitivity reaction to Verbena hybrida

PrTX-I, a noncatalytic and myotoxic Lys49-phospholipase A(2) from Bothrops pirajai venom, was crystallized in the presence of the inhibitor rosmarinic acid (RA). This is the active compound in the methanolic extract of Cordia verbenacea, a plant that is largely used in Brazilian folk medicine. The crystals diffracted X-rays to 1.8 A resolution and the structure was solved by molecular-replacement techniques, showing electron density that corresponds to RA molecules at the entrance to the hydrophobic channel. The crystals belong to space group P2(1)2(1)2(1), indicating conformational changes in

Lippia alba (Verbenaceae) is a native Brazilian medicinal species with varied applications, notable for the diversity of volatile chemotypes defined by the major compounds of its essential oil, with fewer studies of its nonvolatile composition. The objective of this work was to perform the chemical characterization via GC-MS and LC-MS of five L. alba individuals, collected during the rainy and dry season. The chromatographic results were analyzed via untargeted metabolomics. Four of the five individuals maintained the same major essential oil composition between the two periods evaluated and e

The essential oil from the leaves of Lippia multiflora Moldenke (Verbenaceae) was tested for its pediculocidal and scabicidal activites against bodylice, headlice and scabies' mites. The 'knockdown' times obtained for bodylice and headlice using lippia oil preparations were comparatively shorter than those obtained using benzyl benzoate and Delvap Super, a brand of dichlorvos. The lethal effect of the lippia oil on headlice was increased when applied in an enclosed system that prevented volatilization of the oil while allowing maximum contact of the vapour with the headlice. A 20% v/v preparat
