Vertebral Body Tethering: Rationale, Results, and Revision.

Vertebral body tethering is a nonfusion technique for the surgical correction of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. For skeletally immature patients for whom vertebral body tethering is indicated, it is an alternative option to the gold standard posterior spinal fusion (PSF) and may at least partially preserve motion in instrumented segments of the spine. Benefits of the procedure include the possibility of avoiding the long-term sequelae of PSF such as adjacent segment disease and proximal junctional kyphosis. Recent retrospective case series of vertebral body tethering have shown promising res

[Development and application of artificial vertebral body].

Artificial vertebral body has achieved good results in treating spinal tumors, tuberculosis, fracture and other diseases. Currently, artificial vertebral body with variety of kinds and pros and cons, is generally divided into two types: fusion type and movable type. The former according to whether the height could be adjusted and strength of self-stability is divided into three types: support-fixed type, adjust-fixed type and self-fixed type. Whether the height of self-fixed type could be adjusted is dependent on structure of collar thread rotation. The latter is due to mobile device of ball-a

Multilevel vertebral body tuberculosis: a case report.

We report a rare case of multifocal vertebral body tuberculosis with an isolated affection of vertebral bodies and uncommon findings in radiographies that were more suggestive of vascular or tumor lesion. This case is reported to illustrate the complexity of diagnostic procedures necessary to reveal multilevel vertebral body tuberculosis and the place of modern imaging, especially computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, to differentiate vertebral tuberculosis from other differential diagnosis.

[Vertebral body replacement with a Synex implant].

AIM: The authors assessed options for vertebral body replacements with the Synex telescopic expansion cage. Autologic or homologic bone grafts, a titanium "Harm's" cage or a polymethylmetacrylate filling reinforced by Kirschner wires, may be used for vertebral body replacements. The cement filling is indicated in oncological patients, the Harm's cage requires filling with a quantity of bone grafts and, with massive bone grafts, the collection place or the graft availability may be a problem. The telescopic expansion implant is fairly easy to implant, is stable and requires to be filled with a

[Vertebral body replacement with expandable titanium cages].

OBJECTIVES: The aim of vertebral body replacement is the stabilisation and restoration of the anterior column of the spine with removal of the diseased region. We present our results of stabilisation, pain reduction and neurological improvement using vertebral-body replacement systems METHODS: Between April 1997 and December 2002, 53 patients with malignant vertebral destruction or instability due to traumatic and osteoporotic fracture were treated. We evaluated the results after vertebrectomy and vertebral body replacement by using expandable titanium cages in a retrospective study. RESULTS

[Vertebral body exocytosis and spinal cord compression].

Osteochondroma is a cartilaginous tumor, the most common benign tumor of bone. It may involve solitary or multiple exostoses (or osteochondromatosis) usually in hereditary multiple exostosis. The authors report a case of 13-year-old girl with a family history of hereditary multiples exostoses who presented with bilateral sciatica and cauda equina compression. The MRI showed a tumor of the L1 vertebral body. After surgery, pathologic specimens revealed the lesion to be an osteochondroma. Involvement of the vertebral column has been estimated from 1.3 to 4%. Spinal cord compression is rare. CT p

Fractures of the C-2 vertebral body.

Vertical C-2 body fractures are presented in 15 patients with clinical and imaging correlations that suggest the existence of a variety of mechanisms of injury. In these patients, clinical and imaging correlations were derived by: 1) defining the point of impact by clinical examination; 2) defining the point of impact by soft-tissue changes on cranial magnetic resonance (MR) imaging or computerized tomography (CT); 3) obtaining an accurate history of the mechanism of injury; and 4) spine imaging (x-ray studies, CT, and MR imaging) of the C-2 body fracture and surrounding bone and soft tissue.

Sagittal fracture of the cervical vertebral body.

The sagittal fracture of the cervical vertebral body is an uncommon injury producing the paradoxic situation of profound quadriplegia with either normal or minimal radiographic findings and may be overlooked if polytomography or computed tomography (CT) is not performed. The sagittal fracture was the sole fracture of the vertebral body in seven cases encountered in a review of 270 consecutive cervical fractures, and was readily apparent on routine anteroposterior radiographs in two cases, suspected in two cases, but clearly demonstrated in all cases by polytomography or CT. Most (five of seven

Intraosseous lipomata of adjacent vertebral bodies.

Osseous lipomata of vertebral bodies are rare. We present a very unusual case where adjacent vertebrae are involved and the plain radiographic and scintigraphic appearances gave cause for some concern. The findings on plain films, scintigraphy, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are discussed.

[Pathological sagittal shifting of vertebral bodies].

The results of the lumbar spine examinations performed in one year and a half are evaluated by the authors. The types of the sagittal positional changes of the vertebral bodies are discussed in detail. The importance of the functionally centrated and lateral telephotographs in the diagnosis of the antepositional olisthesis and the retropositional retrolisthesis is pointed out, and the indication and the differential diagnostical value of the oblique roentgenograms are dealt with.

[Study of the growth of the vertebral bodies in adolescents].

The height of the vertebral growth zones of 13 adolescents dying between the ages of 13 and 18 years was determined with the aid of an eyepiece micrometer. In addition, the proportion 'total of widths of chondrocyte columns/diameter of the growth zone' was established. In the cervical spine, the growth zones of the caudal end plates were significantly higher than those of the cranial end plates. The reverse was true for the thoracic vertebrae. In the lumbar spine, however, conditions resembled those found in the cervical spine in that the caudal end plates were higher than those of the cranial

Vertebral Body Height Changes in Acute Symptomatic Osteoporotic Vertebral Compression Fractures Treated with Vertebral Cement Augmentation-Which Factors Affect Vertebral Body Height during Follow-up? A Multiple Linear Regression Study.

Changes in vertebral body height depend on various factors which were analyzed in isolation and not as a whole. The aim of this study is to analyze what factors might influence the restoration of the vertebral body height after vertebral augmentation. We analyzed 48 patients (108 vertebrae) with osteoporotic vertebral fractures who underwent vertebral augmentation when a conservative treatment proved to be unsatisfactory. The analyses were carried out at the time of the fracture, during surgery (pre-cementation and post-cementation), at the first medical check-up (6 weeks post-surgery) and at

Fetal Vertebral Chondrostasis-Significance of Excessive Cartilage in Vertebral Bodies of Newborns.

INTRODUCTION: We describe an abnormality in fetal and neonatal vertebral bodies whose most conspicuous characteristic is an increase in cartilaginous matrix within cancellous osseous trabeculae. We have termed this finding fetal chondrostasis (FC). METHODS: We initiated a retrospective review of autopsy reports in which this condition had been prospectively diagnosed during a 36-year period. The Chalkley point counting method was applied to histologic sections of vertebral bodies to assess the relative components of cartilage, bone, and bone marrow. The results were compared to those of three

Vertebral body density role in determining vertebral osteoporotic fracture type and its progression.

Vertebral osteoporotic fractures (VOF) are among the most frequent fractures in the elderly, often leading to an impaired lifestyle and a high economic burden. Although a reduced bone mass density is considered one of the main risk factors for VOF, its role in determining the fracture type, using the AO spine-DGOU classification for osteoporotic thoracolumbar fractures, as well as its progression, is unknown. The current study aimed to: (1) reveal whether the bone density of the vertebral bodies of fractured and non-fractured vertebrae predicts the type of fracture, (2) examine whether bone de
