Incremental markings of enamel in ectothermal vertebrates.

The deposition of enamel is marked by the formation of growth lines, which reflect incremental growth. Although periodic markings have been observed in enamel of non-mammalian vertebrates, the cross-striation interval and the pattern of enamel deposition have not been formally investigated. Here a structural study was made of the enamel in four non-mammalian vertebrates, with emphasis on periodic markings. Teeth from Rana catesbeiana, Tropidurus torquatus, Caiman crocodilus and a Canadian carnosaur were analysed. Enamel of T. torquatus and R. castebeiana was aprismatic; that of C. crocodilus a

Regeneration in the olfactory system of vertebrates.

The olfactory sensory neurons, which are of placodal origin, maintain in adult vertebrates, including mammals, a neurogenetic matrix that allows for their replacement without impairment of function, both in normal circumstances (turnover) and after experimental intervention. The unique characteristics of these "disposable" neurons have recently led to a number of experiments whose results may have some importance in our understanding of the olfactory system and of the nervous system as a whole.

Gonadal sex determination in vertebrates: rethinking established mechanisms.

Sex determination and differentiation are fundamental processes that are not only essential for fertility but also influence the development of many other organs, and hence, are important for species diversity and survival. In mammals, sex is determined by the inheritance of an X or a Y chromosome from the father. The Y chromosome harbours the testis-determining gene SRY, and it has long been thought that its absence is sufficient for ovarian development. Consequently, the ovarian pathway has been treated as a default pathway, in the sense that ovaries do not have or need a female-determining

The hagfish genome and the evolution of vertebrates.

As the only surviving lineages of jawless fishes, hagfishes and lampreys provide a critical window into early vertebrate evolution. Here, we investigate the complex history, timing, and functional role of genome-wide duplications in vertebrates in the light of a chromosome-scale genome of the brown hagfish Eptatretus atami. Using robust chromosome-scale (paralogon-based) phylogenetic methods, we confirm the monophyly of cyclostomes, document an auto-tetraploidization (1RV) that predated the origin of crown group vertebrates ~517 Mya, and establish the timing of subsequent independent duplicati

Appendage Regeneration in Vertebrates: What Makes This Possible?

The ability to regenerate amputated or injured tissues and organs is a fascinating property shared by several invertebrates and, interestingly, some vertebrates. The mechanism of evolutionary loss of regeneration in mammals is not understood, yet from the biomedical and clinical point of view, it would be very beneficial to be able, at least partially, to restore that capability. The current availability of new experimental tools, facilitating the comparative study of models with high regenerative ability, provides a powerful instrument to unveil what is needed for a successful regeneration. The evolution of nasal immune systems in vertebrates.

The olfactory organs of vertebrates are not only extraordinary chemosensory organs but also a powerful defense system against infection. Nasopharynx-associated lymphoid tissue (NALT) has been traditionally considered as the first line of defense against inhaled antigens in birds and mammals. Novel work in early vertebrates such as teleost fish has expanded our view of nasal immune systems, now recognized to fight both water-borne and air-borne pathogens reaching the olfactory epithelium. Like other mucosa-associated lymphoid tissues (MALT), NALT of birds and mammals is composed of organized ly

Prenatal development of respiratory chemoreceptors in endothermic vertebrates.

Respiratory chemoreceptors are neurons that detect PCO(2), PO(2), and/or pH in body fluids and provide sensory feedback for the control of breathing. They play a critical role in coupling pulmonary ventilation to metabolic demand in endothermic vertebrates. During birth in mammals and hatching in birds, the state change from placental or chorioallantoic gas exchange to pulmonary respiration makes acute demands on the neonatal lungs and ventilatory control system, including the respiratory chemoreceptors. Here we review the literature on prenatal development of carotid body chemoreceptors, cent

The origin of the myelination program in vertebrates.

The myelin sheath was a transformative vertebrate acquisition, enabling great increases in impulse propagation velocity along axons. Not all vertebrates possess myelinated axons, however, and when myelin first appeared in the vertebrate lineage is an important open question. It has been suggested that the dual, apparently unrelated acquisitions of myelin and the hinged jaw were actually coupled in evolution [1,2]. If so, it would be expected that myelin was first acquired during the Devonian period by the oldest jawed fish, the placoderms [3]. Although myelin itself is not retained in the foss

Extraocular photoreception and circadian entrainment in nonmammalian vertebrates.

In mammals both the regulation of circadian rhythms and photoperiodic responses depend exclusively upon photic information provided by the lateral eyes; however, nonmammalian vertebrates can also rely on multiple extraocular photoreceptors to perform the same tasks. Extraocular photoreceptors include deep brain photoreceptors located in several distinct brain sites and the pineal complex, involving intracranial (pineal and parapineal) and extracranial (frontal organ and parietal eye) components. This review updates the research field of the most recent acquisitions concerning the roles of extr

Retinal stem cells in vertebrates: parallels and divergences.

During the development of the nervous system, after a given number of divisions, progenitors exit the cell cycle and differentiate as neurons or glial cells. Some cells however do not obey this general rule and persist in a progenitor state. These cells, called stem cells, have the ability to self-renew and to generate different lineages. Understanding the mechanisms that allow stem cells to "resist" differentiating stimuli is currently one of the most fascinating research areas for biologists. The amphibian and fish retinas, known to contain stem cell populations, have been pioneering models

Spiroplasmas: infectious agents of plants, arthropods and vertebrates.

The spiroplasmas are mollicutes characterized by motility and helical morphology. They were discovered through studies on corn stunt and citrus stubborn diseases. The stubborn agent was the first mollicute of plant origin to be obtained in culture and the first cultured mollicute to possess a helical morphology. The citrus pathogen has been known as Spiroplasma citri since 1973. The corn stunt agent was cultured in 1975 and fully characterized as Spiroplasma kunkelii by 1986. The third and only other phytopathogenic spiroplasma is Spiroplasma phoeniceum, cultured from naturally infected periwi

The angiosomes of the mammals and other vertebrates.

This is a comparative study of the vasculature of the integument and underlying deep tissues of a range of mammals and other vertebrates. The investigation was conducted in the pig, monkey, dog, cat, possum, guinea pig, rat, rabbit, duck, and toad. The results from each are compared not only to each other, but also to previously performed human studies. The arterial network of the fresh animal cadaver was injected with a mixture of lead oxide and gelatin. The vascular anatomy of the skin, deep tissues, and individual muscles was defined by dissection, cutaneous perforator counts, photography,

Aldehyde dehydrogenase activity in blood from various vertebrates.

1. Aldehyde dehydrogenase activity was determined in whole blood samples from 17 selected vertebrates of 5 classes, using 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetaldehyde (the aldehyde derived from dopamine) as substrate. 2. Aldehyde dehydrogenase activity in blood was widely but unevenly distributed among the species studied. 3. Mean aldehyde dehydrogenase activities in the range of 40-140 nmol/min.ml blood (measured at 37 degrees C, pH 8.8) were found in blood from man, monkey, rabbit, guinea pig and mouse (C57BL and NMRI strains), with the highest activity in rabbit blood. 4. Much lower aldehyde dehydrogena

The evolution of asymmetrical gaits in gnathostome vertebrates.

The difficulty of quantifying asymmetrical limb movements, compared with symmetrical gaits, has resulted in a dearth of information concerning the mechanics and adaptive benefits of these locomotor patterns. Further, no study has explored the evolutionary history of asymmetrical gaits using phylogenetic comparative techniques. Most foundational work suggests that symmetrical gaits are an ancestral feature and asymmetrical gaits are a more derived feature of mammals, some crocodilians, some turtles, anurans and some fish species. In this study, we searched the literature for evidence of the use

Thyroid Hormone Distributor Proteins During Development in Vertebrates.

Thyroid hormones (THs) are ancient hormones that not only influence the growth, development and metabolism of vertebrates but also affect the metabolism of (at least some) bacteria. Synthesized in the thyroid gland (or follicular cells in fish not having a discrete thyroid gland), THs can act on target cells by genomic or non-genomic mechanisms. Either way, THs need to get from their site of synthesis to their target cells throughout the body. Despite being amphipathic in structure, THs are lipophilic and hence do not freely diffuse in the aqueous environments of blood or cerebrospinal fluid (

Molecular basis for regulating seasonal reproduction in vertebrates.

Animals that inhabit mid- to high-latitude regions exhibit various adaptive behaviors, such as migration, reproduction, molting and hibernation in response to seasonal cues. These adaptive behaviors are tightly regulated by seasonal changes in photoperiod, the relative day length vs night length. Recently, the regulatory pathway of seasonal reproduction has been elucidated using quail. In birds, deep brain photoreceptors receive and transmit light information to the pars tuberalis in the pituitary gland, which induces the secretion of thyroid-stimulating hormone. Thyroid-stimulating hormone lo

The impact of environmental chemicals on wildlife vertebrates.

A plethora of papers have been published that address the affects of chemicals on wildlife vertebrates. Collectively, they support a connection between environmental pollution and effects on wildlife vertebrate populations; however, causal relationships between exposure, and reproduction or population structure effects have been established for only a few species. In a vast number of fish species, particularly in teleosts, it is accepted that EDCs affect the endocrine system of individuals and may alter sexual development and fertility. However, only few studies have demonstrated population-le

Iris development in vertebrates; genetic and molecular considerations.

The iris plays a key role in visual function. It regulates the amount of light entering the eye and falling on the retina and also operates in focal adjustment of closer objects. The iris is involved in circulation of the aqueous humor and hence functions in regulation of intraocular pressure. Intriguingly, iris pigmented cells possess the ability to transdifferentiate into different ocular cell types of retinal pigmented epithelium, photoreceptors and lens cells. Thus, the iris is considered a potential source for cell-replacement therapies. During embryogenesis, the iris arises from both the
