OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in alveolar and skeletal dimensions among subjects with different vertical facial dimensions using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). To date, this is the first study that investigates the relationship between facial type and posterior alveolar thickness in both maxilla and mandible, using CBCT data.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From a sample of 152 CBCT scans, 45 scans were selected to be included in the study. CBCT-synthesized lateral cephalograms were used to categorize subjects into three groups based on their vertical skele

An entirely digital concept has previously been proposed for the reconstruction of the occlusal plane in the case of wear-induced loss of the vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO). The concept, however, calls for a face scan. Since this technology is less frequently available than a facebow, the concept discussed in this article proposes a combination of analog and digital techniques. It takes into account the problem of redefining the occlusal plane in the case of occlusal alteration, and tries to avoid a situation where the chairside digital design of the occlusal surfaces is performed witho

The aim of this study was to evaluate the postsurgical mandibular changes after surgery based on vertical dimension increase in skeletal Class III deformities. Patients who underwent mandibular setback surgery for skeletal Class III malocclusion correction with surgery-first orthognathic treatment were enrolled in the study. Lateral cephalograms were obtained at initial visit, immediately after surgery, 6 months after surgery, and at post-treatment. Postsurgical change of the mandible based on the vertical dimension increase was estimated using a diagrammatic method before surgery and this amo

OBJECTIVE: Malocclusion with deep overbite and facial esthetics improve when facial height is intentionally increased during orthodontic extrusion of the posterior teeth. Thus, a better understanding of post-treatment stability of increased occlusal vertical dimension (iOVD) in adult patients is important. We focused on the jaw-opening reflex (JOR), which plays an important role in the control of jaw movements during mastication, and investigated the effects of iOVD on the JOR in rats with an electrophysiological technique.
DESIGN: One hundred and twenty 13-week-old male Wistar rats were rand

BACKGROUND: We have previously reported that the decrease of the vertical occlusal dimension (VOD) led to heart failure and abnormalities in creatine phosphokinase (CPK) in guinea pigs. In the present study, we investigated the autonomic activity and the origin of the abnormality in CPK under different occlusal conditions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Guinea pigs were separated into the following five groups: untreated control, reduced VOD, slit, restored VOD and increased VOD groups and compared for their electrocardiogram and heart rate fluctuations for two weeks using Fluclet, computer software.

OBJECTIVES: The concept of vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO) refers to a measure in the vertical plane that establishes the relation between the maxilla and the mandible when the posterior teeth, both from the maxillary and from the mandibular arches, are occluded, regardless of whether they are natural or prosthetic, healthy or restored. This measure is subject to change, and when this occurs, it can compromise both the function and the facial aesthetics. This study proposed to develop a methodology based on cephalometric analysis by studying the 31 lateral teleradiographs of adult, denta

This report describes the oral rehabilitation of a young boy with severe oligodontia of primary dentition and complete anodontia of permanent dentition, treated by complete maxillary and partial mandibular removable dentures. Since the determination of a proper occlusal vertical dimension in paediatric patients is often difficult, treatment was achieved by means of a multidisciplinary approach involving conventional prosthodontic principles combined with cephalometric analysis and growth prediction. After a follow-up of two years a second lateral cephalogram was taken to evaluate the developme

BACKGROUND: For restorative demands, increased vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO) is sometimes necessary, as facial changes can be perceptible.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the perception of facial change due to increased VDO and associated soft tissue changes using 3D-scanned facial images.
METHODS: Forty participants with healthy dentition and no loss of VDO were recruited. The VDO was increased by 2, 4, 6 and 8 mm on a semi-adjustable articulator after maxillomandibular impressions. Facebow transfers were taken for each participant to create a personalised device. 3D facial

OBJECTIVE: The effects of unilateral increased occlusal vertical dimension (iOVD) on bilateral craniofacial, mandibular and alveolar development in growing rats were investigated via cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). The role of Wnt/β-catenin signalling in this process was examined.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-eight female Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly allocated into unilateral iOVD and sham groups. At 2, 4 and 8 weeks, the rats were scanned via CBCT to analyse cranial, maxillary, mandibular and dental morphology. Changes in temporomandibular joint (TMJ) cartilage histology and Wnt/β

BACKGROUND: A common strategy in the non-extraction treatment of Class II molar relationship is maxillary molar distalization, which could increase lower face height and cause clockwise mandibular rotation. The aim of this retrospective study was to analyse the effects on vertical dentoskeletal dimension of young adults treated with sequential distalization with orthodontic aligners.
METHODS: Lateral cephalometric radiographs of 10 subjects (8 females 2 males; mean age 22.7 ± 5.3 years) treated with upper molars sequential distalization with orthodontic aligners (Invisalign, Align Technology,

The aims of this study were to determine Japanese cephalometric norms in the antero-posterior and vertical dimension, and to test the hypothesis that there are racial differences in cephalometric measurements between Japanese and Caucasian norms. Radiographs were obtained from 25 healthy Japanese males (aged 25.1 +/- 2.7 years) and 24 healthy Japanese females (aged 23.6 +/- 1.3 years). Inclusion criteria were an ANB angle between 2 and 5 degrees, a normal occlusion with minor or no crowding, all teeth present except third molars, no previous orthodontic treatment, and no prosthetic replacement

BACKGROUND: It is still subject to controversy if an increased vertical opening (VO) is beneficial in oral appliance therapy for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea. Each oral appliance has a given thickness causing VO. Therefore, evaluation of the effects of the amount of VO on pharyngeal dimensions is mandatory.
METHODS: The effects of VO on the cross-sectional area of the upper airway at the level of the tongue base during sleep endoscopy were scored and categorised.
RESULTS: The figures demonstrate the possible effects of VO on pharyngeal collapse relative to the baseline cross-sec

AIM: Prefabricated myofunctional appliances (PMAs) are widely adopted for correcting the sagittal and vertical dimensions during mixed dentition. Despite the effectiveness of the antero-posterior relationship has been recently evaluated, the effectiveness in correcting the vertical dimension is still uncertain. This systematic review aimed to assess the effectiveness of PMAs treatment in children with mixed dentition on the vertical dimension, including sagittal and transverse parameters that may affect the vertical dimension.

PURPOSE: Adequate control of the vertical dimension is of great importance in orthodontic treatment. Although existing evidence is very limited, extraction of four premolars is thought to contribute towards improved control of anterior facial height compared with non-extraction treatment protocols. Thus, the aim of this retrospective cohort study was to compare the effect of fixed-appliance treatment with extraction of four premolars to non-extraction treatment on the skeletal vertical dimension.
METHODS: A consecutive sample of 76 children with skeletal hyperdivergence (49% male; mean age 11

Increasing the occlusal vertical dimension (OVD) is often indicated in complex oral rehabilitation to gain restorative space and improve the occlusal relationship and aesthetics. The effect of increasing the OVD on lower facial height and facial aesthetics is not well understood and evaluated. The authors present the philosophy of the neuromuscular concept and illustrate it through a case report of a 58-year-old female patient who presented severe deep bite, bruxism, and temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). After clinical evaluation, the extraoral examination showed a reduction of the lower fac
