Large Vestibular Aqueduct Syndrome: Parents' and Audiologists' Perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Large vestibular aqueduct syndrome (LVAS) is an auditory disorder that is difficult to diagnose and manage; it is confirmed when the vestibular aqueduct is >1.5 mm in diameter. Diagnosis of LVAS in children can devastate parents and challenge healthcare professionals who serve these patients and their families. PURPOSE: This study surveyed parents of children with LVAS about their knowledge of and experiences with LVAS and their attitudes about the support provided to them by healthcare professionals. This study also surveyed audiologists about their knowledge of and experiences w

Otosclerosis involving the vestibular aqueduct and Menière's disease.

The coexistence of otosclerosis and endolymphatic hydrops in the temporal bone have been described; however, the mechanism for the development of endolymphatic hydrops in otosclerosis remains unknown. Among 128 temporal bones with otosclerosis, involvement of the vestibular aqueduct by otosclerosis was observed in four temporal bones from two patients. In all four, the vestibular aqueduct was filled with active otosclerotic foci; the lumen of the endolymphatic duct and sac was narrowed as a result of fibrosis, and endolymphatic hydrops, more severe in the pars inferior than the pars superior,

Enlarged vestibular aqueduct as a cause of postneonatal deafness.

INTRODUCTION: The enlarged vestibular aqueduct (EVA) is the most frequent malformation of the inner ear associated with sensorineural hearing loss (5-15%). It exists when the diameter in imaging tests is greater than 1.5 mm at its midpoint. The association between hearing loss and EVA has been described in a syndromic and non-syndromic manner. It can appear as a familial or isolated form and the audiological profile is highly variable. The gene responsible for sensorineural hearing loss associated with EVA is located in the same region described for Pendred syndrome, where the SCL26A4 gene is

The vein of the vestibular aqueduct with potential pathologic perspectives.

HYPOTHESIS: Pathologic changes around the vein of the vestibular aqueduct (VVA) may cause obstruction to the flow of blood toward the sigmoid sinus. Furthermore, a distal obstruction of this vessel may be responsible for a development of a retrograde flow of blood with concomitant drainage of endolymphatic sac (ES) substances to the inner ear. BACKGROUND: The VVA is responsible for the venous drainage of the vestibular apparatus and endolymphatic duct and ES. Previous studies have linked the VVA to Ménière's disease. The aim of the present article was a 3-dimensional perspective study of the

Aqueductal stenosis--results of vestibular function tests.

A case of aqueductal stenosis is reported. The patient was a 14-year-old Japanese girl who was suffering from bilateral tinnitus and unsteadiness of gait. A series of neuro-otological tests revealed prolonged acoustically evoked brain stem response (ABR) latency, disturbed standing reflex, inhibited optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) and ataxic eye tracking test (ETT). Marked distension of the lateral and third ventricles was noticed on CT examination of the brain. A positive contrast ventriculogram using iotalamic acid showed occlusion of the cerebral (Sylvian) aqueduct. All of these results are sug

Auditory and imaging markers of atypical enlarged vestibular aqueduct.

PURPOSE: To characterize the auditory and imaging markers of atypical enlarged vestibular aqueduct (EVA). METHODS: 15 EVA cases (26 ears) confirmed via high-resolution MRI (HRMRI) that did not meet the Valvassori criterion on high-resolution CT (HRCT) were classified as atypical EVA. Another 21 EVA cases (40 ears) meeting the Valvassori criterion were randomly chosen as typical EVA. The hearing loss (HL), HRCT, and HRMRI findings were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: The difference of HL severity between atypical and typical EVA was not statistically significant (χ2 = 0.12, P > 0.05

Enlarged vestibular aqueduct: Intraoperative electrocochleography findings during cochlear implantation.

Enlarged vestibular aqueduct (EVA) is the most frequent inner ear abnormality found on computed tomography in children with sensorineural hearing loss. The effects EVA abnormalities have on electrocochleography (ECochG) are unknown. Positive deflections in summation potential evoked by tone bursts were observed in 3/5 subjects, while a large negative deflection, similar to endolymphatic hydrops (EH), was observed for 2/5 subjects. The presence of an enlarged summation potential, with and without a compound action potential, was observed in response to a broadband click stimulus. Results sugges
