PURPOSE: To investigate whether patients with vestibular migraine (VM) are more susceptible to carsickness than patients with non-vestibular migraine (NVM) or Meniere's disease (MD).
METHODS: Consecutive patients with a diagnosis of definite VM, probable VM, NVM, or MD at our Headache and Dizziness clinics were interviewed using the same three questions to investigate the history of carsickness. The patients who had experienced carsickness in their lifetime and those who had still experienced carsickness in the past ten years were identified. The rates of carsickness were compared between gro

BACKGROUND: Abnormal vestibular function has been reported in patients with vestibular migraine (VM). However, it is unclear whether the proportion of patients with vestibular dysfunction differs between the diagnoses of VM and probable VM (PVM).
METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of 1736 patients who underwent cervical vestibular-evoked myogenic potential testing to air-conducted sound (ACS cVEMP), ocular VEMP testing to bone-conducted vibration (BCV oVEMP), and caloric testing. We used the diagnostic criteria for VM provided in the appendix of the International Classification of Heada

Vestibular migraine (VM) is one of the most common neurologic causes of vertigo. Symptoms and International Classification of Headache Disorders criteria are used to diagnose VM because no objective tests, imaging or audiologic, have been shown to reliably diagnose this condition. Central auditory, peripheral, and central vestibular pathway involvement has been associated with VM. Although the interaction between migraine and other vestibular disorders can be a challenging scenario for diagnosis and treatment, there are data to show that vestibular rehabilitation and a variety of pharmacologic

Treatment of vestibular migraine currently lacks a firm scientific basis, as high quality randomized controlled trials are not available. Therefore, recommendations are largely borrowed from the migraine sphere. The first therapeutic step is explanation and reassurance. Many patients do not need pharmacological treatment, as attacks may be infrequent and tolerable. Acute attacks can be ameliorated in some patients with antiemetic drugs such as diphenhydramine, meclizine, and metoclopramide. Frequent attacks may warrant pharmacological prophylaxis with metoprolol, amitriptyline, topiramate, val

Vestibular migraine probably represents the second most common cause of vertigo after benign positional vertigo, by far exceeding Ménière disease. There are still relatively few published reports on vestibular migraine management, despite its enormous importance in daily practice. In 2003 the first clinical definition of vestibular migraine was proposed. Studies published before 2003 used variable terms for vestibular migraine. Some authors recommend treating vestibular migraine using multiple drugs; others have focused on using only one drug. Although at present it is not possible to quantify

Vestibular migraine (VM) is a disorder with a spectrum of clinical presentations and among the most common causes of chronic vestibular symptoms. Some present with attacks before or during typical migraine, but many others have fluctuating or daily symptoms. While the symptoms and pathogenesis of vestibular migraine may have elements of both central and peripheral disorders, hearing loss should be absent. VM typically worsens with activity and head movements in general, and encompasses symptoms of vertigo, disequilibrium, or imbalance. While it is possible to confuse other disorders such as Me

INTRODUCTION: Vestibular migraine (VM) is now accepted as a common cause of episodic vertigo. Treatment of VM involves two situations: the vestibular symptom attacks and the period between attacks. For the latter, some prophylaxis methods can be used. The current recommendation is to use the same prophylactic drugs used for migraines, including β-blockers, antidepressants and anticonvulsants. The recent diagnostic definition of vestibular migraine makes the number of studies on its treatment scarce.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of prophylactic treatment used in patients from a VM outpa

BACKGROUND: We characterise the history, vestibular tests, ictal and interictal nystagmus in vestibular migraine.
METHOD: We present our observations on 101 adult-patients presenting to an outpatient facility with recurrent spontaneous and/or positional vertigo whose final diagnosis was vestibular migraine (n = 27) or probable vestibular migraine (n = 74). Ictal and interictal video-oculography, caloric and video head impulse tests, vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials and audiometry were performed.
RESULTS: Common presenting symptoms were headache (81.2%), spinning vertigo (72.3%), Mal de

OBJECTIVE: Literature investigating otolith reflexes in patients with vestibular migraine (VM) is variable and primarily describes the descending saccular pathway. This research aimed to study ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential (oVEMP) and cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential (cVEMP) prevalence and response characteristics in patients with suspected VM and in control patients. The purpose is to assess vulnerabilities within the ascending utricular and descending saccular pathways in the VM population.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study

Pathogenesis, clinical characteristics and treatments of vestibular migraine(VM) in recent years were retrospectively analyzed. The results showed that VM had diversified vestibular symptoms. VM may show a mild central and peripheral vestibular dysfunction during ictal and interictal period. Although no specificity, it could provide important references to identify VM. The pathogenesis of VM, which depended upon the clues of migraine, had been supposed to be probably related to genetic susceptibility, neurotransmitter changes induced by trigeminal nerve, and abnormal integration of central sig

BACKGROUND: Vestibular migraine (VM) is one of the most common causes of vertigo in clinical practice but it is not always easy to make the correct diagnosis. Our aims were to find out how VM patients differ from migraine only (MO) patients, to evaluate co-morbid depression in these two groups and to determine if their disease has an effect on their quality of life.
METHODS: We studied 50 definite VM and 35 MO patients. Each patient was asked about: age of onset, duration of headaches, presence of aura, headache characteristics, triggering factors, associated features, motion sickness history

A retrospective study was conducted on 90 patients with episodic vertigo that could be related to migraine as the most probable pathomechanism. Since the majority of the patients did not fulfill the criteria of the International Headache Society (IHS) for basilar migraine, the diagnosis was substantiated by disease course, medical efficacy in treating (ergotamines) and preventing (metoprolol, flunarizine) attacks, ocular motor abnormalities in the symptom-free interval, and careful exclusion of the most relevant differential diagnoses, such as transient ischemic attacks, Menière's disease, and

BACKGROUND: Vestibular rehabilitation is the most effective treatment for dizziness due to vestibular dysfunction. Given the biological relationship between vestibular symptoms and headache, headache in patients with vestibular migraine (VM) could be improved by vestibular rehabilitation that leads to the improvement of dizziness. This study aimed to compare the effects of vestibular rehabilitation on headache and other outcomes relating to dizziness, and the psychological factors in patients with VM patients, patients with dizziness and tension-type headache, and patients without headache.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this narrative review is to discuss current literature about vestibular migraine and other cochleovestibular symptoms related to migraine.
RECENT FINDINGS: Vestibular migraine affects 2.7% of the US population. Misdiagnosis is common. The pathophysiology is currently unknown but new research shows that calcitonin gene-related peptide, which is implicated in migraine headaches, is expressed in the audiovestibular periphery. A recent large-scale placebo-controlled trial looking at metoprolol for vestibular migraine was terminated early due to poor recruitment;

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The goal of this review is to provide an actualized overview on vestibular migraine in childhood and adolescence, with focus on the epidemiology and clinical presentation as well as its treatment.
RECENT FINDINGS: Vertigo spells in childhood can evolve into other periodic syndromes and/or migraine types and persist even into adulthood. Vestibular migraine (VM) and benign paroxysmal vertigo are the most common causes of vertigo in children and adolescents. The diagnostic criteria for VM are dizziness and vertigo, headache, phonophobia and photophobia, and visual aura. The pr

The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationships between migraine and the vestibular system in adults. A review of the literature on migraine reveals that paroxysmal vertigo is not uncommonly associated with migraine in various temporal relationships with headache and/or other neurologic symptoms. Vertigo (or nonvertiginous dizziness) may be the chief presenting complaint sometimes masking less dramatic symptoms causing patients to be directed to an otolaryngologist. Meticulous family, past personal, and present history are necessary to produce the information leading to suspicion of
