The effects of the "vestibular sedative" drug, Flunarizine upon the vestibular and oculomotor systems.

The effects of the "vestibular sedative" drug Flunarizine upon the oculomotor functions of pursuit and voluntary saccades and upon the vestibular response (to rotational stimuli) were assessed in twenty volunteer subjects. The study was then extended to three patients with chronic imbalance of central origin who had reported a beneficial symptomatic response to the drug. Three of the volunteer subjects were found to have a directional preponderance (presumed to arise from peripheral dysfunction). In the remaining seventeen normal subjects Flunarizine was found to reduce the amplitudes of fast

[Lesions of the vertical and horizontal systems in the optokinetic vestibular system].

Symptoms of vestibulo-ocular disturbances may be classified into two major groups; i.e., vertical plane and horizontal plane disturbances. Vertical plane symptoms arise from midline lesions of the cerebellum or the brainstem and also from diffuse or symmetrical lesions to either. Vertical plane symptoms also arise from lesions which simultaneously effect both peripheral vestibular systems. Horizontal plane symptoms originate from a unilateral disturbance in the vestibular system. Thus, vertical plane symptoms indicate bilateral disturbances and the symptoms appear symmetrically in the eyes, tr

Vestibular system in infants after systemic therapy with amikacin.

OBJECTIVE: The ototoxic action of systemic therapy with aminoglycosides, used in vital infections in infants, is well recognized. Nevertheless, the routine examination of the infants' inner ear does not include vestibular tests. The purpose of the study was to evaluate vestibular function in a group of infants before and after administration of aminoglycosides, using caloric tests and vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs). DESIGN: Randomized clinical study. SETTING: Tertiary referral centre. METHODS: VEMPs and auditory brainstem responses were recorded and caloric stimulation was pe

Vestibular system in infants after systemic aminoglycoside therapy.

OBJECTIVES: The ototoxic action of systemic therapy with aminoglycoside antibiotics leading to the loss of inner ear hair cells is well recognized. The mitochondria-mediated pathway of apoptosis may play a role in inducing the apoptosis of vestibular hair cells due to aminoglycoside toxicity. Aminoglycosides are, nevertheless, routinely used for treatment of vital infections in neonatologic departments. Although there is a strong supposition that aminoglycosides can influence the vestibular function in infants, the routine examination of the infants' inner ear does not include vestibular tests

[Vestibular system in patients with sensorineural hearing loss].

A near localization of anatomical structures of an inner ear and possibility of damage caused by the same etiopathogenic factor implies that sensorineural hearing loss may be accompanied by vertigo and dizziness. The aim of a study was to evaluate a frequency of vestibular system dysfunction in patients with sensorineural hearing loss and to analyse it according to severity and type of the hearing loss. We evaluated a group of 126 persons which were treated in ENT Department during the last year from sensorineural hearing loss. In all subjects' audiological and ENG examinations were performed.

Novel suspension system for gasless transoral vestibular thyroidectomy.

BACKGROUND: The transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy vestibular approach (TOETVA) is receiving increased attention, frequently due to growing requirements for cosmetic incisions. Here, we report our initial experience and discuss the safety and efficacy of the innovative surgical working space suspension system for gasless TOETVA. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 75 consecutive patients for whom gasless TOETVA with our novel working space suspension system was used. This suspension system included self-developed retractors, a sterile bandage, and an anesthesia stand. We also improved some m

Behavioral assessment of the aging mouse vestibular system.

Age related decline in balance performance is associated with deteriorating muscle strength, motor coordination and vestibular function. While a number of studies show changes in balance phenotype with age in rodents, very few isolate the vestibular contribution to balance under either normal conditions or during senescence. We use two standard behavioral tests to characterize the balance performance of mice at defined age points over the lifespan: the rotarod test and the inclined balance beam test. Importantly though, a custom built rotator is also used to stimulate the vestibular system of

Intrinsic and synaptic plasticity in the vestibular system.

The vestibular system provides an attractive model for understanding how changes in cellular and synaptic activity influence learning and memory in a quantifiable behavior, the vestibulo-ocular reflex. The vestibulo-ocular reflex produces eye movements that compensate for head motion; simple yet powerful forms of motor learning calibrate the circuit throughout life. Learning in the vestibulo-ocular reflex depends initially on the activity of Purkinje cells in the cerebellar flocculus, but consolidated memories appear to be stored downstream of Purkinje cells, probably in the vestibular nuclei.

The significance of motion sickness in the vestibular system.

In order to clarify the significance of motion sickness in the vestibular system, we compared the findings of experimental motion sickness between different kinds of subjects, some of which were already reported. Subjects were healthy adults, healthy children between the ages of 4 and 15 years, and patients with congenital and acquired labyrinthine loss. They were asked to walk while wearing horizontally and vertically reversing goggles. Equilibrium ataxia as well as motion sickness were evoked by horizontal reversal, but not by vertical reversal in healthy subjects. Kindergarten children exhi

Migraine and the vestibular system in childhood and adolescence.

A review of the literature gives considerable evidence that there are manifestations of migraine involving the vestibular system starting in infancy and proceeding to late life. This paper deals with these manifestations in the first two decades of life. There is evidence that vestibular symptoms are probably caused by involvement at different levels of the system in different cases. Paroxysmal vestibular symptoms may occur in association with headache, temporally independent of headache, or without headache, and may at times be the chief complaint causing the patient to seek help from the oto

Radiation effects on the auditory and vestibular systems.

Definitive or postoperative radiation therapy (RT) is commonly used for the management of intracranial and extracranial head and neck tumors. Because of the variability of tumor location and dimensions, sparing of nontarget normal tissue and organs may not be possible. Treatment modalities that deliver the highest doses of radiation to the auditory system include stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy (FSRT) for the treatment of vestibular schwannomas (VS), and fractionated radiotherapy (FRT) or intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) for the treatment

The effect of loud noise on the vestibular system.

The effect of a 2 sec 113--123 dB ISO pure tone stimulus on ENG was studied. The material consisted of patients with operated and unoperated otosclerosis, normal ears, patients with sensorineural defects, and cases of chronic otitis media. ENG changes were found in 45% of patients with sensorineural hearing loss, in 35% of operated otosclerotics, in 15% of unoperated otosclerotics, in 15% of patients with chronic media, but in none of the normal-hearing patients. Most of the patients showing ENG changes felt dizzy. These results seem to imply a possible risk to patients with sensorineural hear

Electrical stimulation of the peripheral and central vestibular system.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Electrical stimulation of the peripheral and central vestibular system using noninvasive (galvanic vestibular stimulation, GVS) or invasive (intracranial electrical brain stimulation, iEBS) approaches have a long history of use in studying self-motion perception and balance control. The aim of this review is to summarize recent electrophysiological studies of the effects of GVS, and functional mapping of the central vestibular system using iEBS in awake patients. RECENT FINDINGS: The use of GVS has become increasingly common in the assessment and treatment of a wide range o

Physiologic effects on the vestibular system in Meniere's disease.

Ménière syndrome is an inner ear disorder characterized by spontaneous attacks of vertigo, fluctuating low-frequency sensorineural hearing loss, aural fullness and tinnitus. When the syndrome is idiopathic and cannot be attributed to any other cause (eg, syphilis, immune-mediated inner ear disease, surgical trauma), it is referred to as Ménière disease. This article reviews the physiologic effects of Ménière disease on vestibular function, as measured by caloric, head impulse, and vestibular-evoked myogenic potential testing.
