The evaluation of internal auditory canals and cochlea has gained significant importance due to the increasing number of cochlear implantations worldwide. This region's anatomical study is essential for cochlear implant surgery using magnetic resonance imaging as the method of choice. We report a case of a 6-year-old male patient diagnosed with a rare bilateral malformation of the internal auditory canals associated with an aberrant course of the facial nerve and vestibulocochlear nerve aplasia. This report raises the importance of identifying this rare malformation for appropriate management

OBJECT: In this paper, the authors introduce a method of noninvasive anatomical analysis of the facial nerve-vestibulocochlear nerve complex and the depiction of the variable vascular relationships by using 3D volume visualization. With this technique, a detailed spatial representation of the facial and vestibulocochlear nerves was obtained. Patients with hemifacial spasm (HFS) resulting from neurovascular compression (NVC) were examined.
METHODS: A total of 25 patients (13 males and 12 females) with HFS underwent 3D visualization using magnetic resonance (MR) imaging with 3D constructive int

It is generally accepted that hemifacial spasm (HFS) is caused by vascular compression at the root exit zone (REZ) of the facial nerve. We saw an HFS patient caused by vascular compression of the distal portion of the facial nerve associated with configuration variation of the facial-vestibulocochlear nerve complex. A 50-year-old female with left HFS was admitted to our hospital. Preoperative magnetic resonance image demonstrated no offending artery around the facial nerve at the nerve's REZ. Microvascular decompression of the left seventh cranial nerve was performed via a lateral suboccipital

PTCD should be considered in children with developmental delay and sensorineural hearing loss. MRI is crucial for identifying the characteristic dorsal "tegmental cap" and associated hindbrain anomalies. Vestibulocochlear nerve aplasia may explain severe hearing impairment in PTCD. Early diagnosis enables timely multidisciplinary rehabilitation and audiological intervention.

The aim of this study was to assess the performance of three-dimensional fast recovery fast spin-echo (3DFRFSE) for imaging of the inner ear as well as the facial and vestibulocochlear nerves. We evaluated 3DFRFSE sequences, comparing it with 3D fast spin-echo (3DFSE) in a water phantom and in 12 normal volunteers. We also examined 66 patients using 3DFRFSE sequence and assessed the visualization of their pathologies. In a water phantom study, signal intensity (SI) on 3DFRFSE was higher than that on 3DFSE at the same TR ranging from 1,500 to 6,000 ms. In normal volunteers, 3DFRFSE with TR of 2

INTRODUCTION: Intracranial hemorrhage, most often intraparenchymal hemorrhage, is an increasingly common and fatal complication of warfarin-induced coagulopathy. Warfarin remains the anticoagulant of choice in valvular atrial fibrillation. However, warfarin has a narrow therapeutic index. Extra axial hemorrhage due to warfarin-induced coagulopathy is a rare adverse event. We present a rare case of right vestibulocochlear and lower motor neuron (LMN) facial palsy secondary to an intracranial bleed along the cerebellopontine angle.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 36-year-old woman presented with headache,

We present a rare case of traumatic facial and vestibulocochlear nerve injury in the internal acoustic canal in the absence of a temporal bone fracture. A 2.5-year-old female presented with sudden-onset left-sided facial paralysis and ipsilateral total hearing loss after being hit by a falling television. High-resolution computed tomography revealed an occipital fracture line that spared the temporal bone and otic capsule. Diagnostic auditory brainstem response testing showed that wave V at 90-db normal hearing level was absent in the left ear. Needle electromyography revealed severe axonal in

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors are the most common malignant mesenchymal tumors of soft tissues, but they are very rare when found to arise from a cranial nerve and when not in association with neurofibromatosis. These tumors are highly malignant and carry a poor prognosis with survival usually less than 6 months.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: The authors report the case of a 23-year-old female with no history of phakomatoses, previous irradiation, or known genetic disorders, who presented with a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor of the vestibulocochlear ne

Vertebrobasilar dolichoectasia (VBD) can lead to cranial nerve symptoms. However, multiple cranial nerve symptoms associated with VBD in one case remain extremely rare. We here present the case of a 33-year-old male with VBD diagnosed by multimodality imaging, who developed simultaneous abducens and vestibulocochlear nerve symptoms and subsequently improved after blood pressure control treatment. To our knowledge, this is the first report of such a vascular disorder resulting in simultaneous symptoms of the abducens and vestibulocochlear nerves. This study highlights that such a vascular anoma

BACKGROUND: According to recent findings, diffusion tensor tractography (DTT) only allows prediction of facial nerve location in relation to vestibular schwannoma (VS) with high probability. However, previous studies have not mentioned why only the facial nerve was selectively visualized. Our previous report investigated the optimal conditions of DTT for normal facial and vestibulocochlear nerves. In the present study, we applied the optimal conditions of DTT to VS patients to assess the feasibility of DTT for the facial and vestibulocochlear nerves.
METHODS: We investigated 11 patients with

BACKGROUND: Vestibulocochlear nerve (VCN) disorders are still one of the most challenging diagnoses due to their wide range of clinical manifestations, from hearing loss to balance dysfunction. Radiographers need to be competent in various advanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques so that they may optimize examinations to enhance diagnostic sensitivity.
PURPOSE: This review article discusses the role of MRI in diagnosing disorders of VCN, with an emphasis on advances in imaging protocols, implications for the radiographer, and how such techniques will be integrated into clinical pr

Cystic medial degeneration (Gsell-Erdheim syndrome, cystic medial necrosis) is considered to be a nonspecific histological manifestation of a group of diseases characterized by degenerative changes in the media, affecting primarily the aorta and adjacent branches, which leads to destruction of the vessel wall, followed by its expansion and, possibly, rupture. The authors describe a case of a 65-year-old female patient with a neurovascular conflict of the three cranial nerves with dolichoectatic basilar artery due to cystic medial degeneration. As a result, the patient has clinical manifestatio
