Hematopoietic and lymphoproliferative cancer among male veterans using the Veterans Administration Medical System.

Hematopoietic and lymphoproliferative cancer risk among the 3.7 million United States male veterans who use the Veterans Administration (VA) medical system annually was assessed using age-specific incidence curves and cumulative incidence rates. Relative risk comparing the VA with general population risk estimates from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) data were increased significantly for all malignancies examined. The VA sample showed risk increases of 93% for Hodgkin's disease, 20% for non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, 51% for multiple myelomas, and 40% for all leukemias. Among

Assessing Rural Veterans' Experiences with a Tele-Nephrology Program in the Veterans Health Administration.

INTRODUCTION: Rural-living veterans with chronic kidney disease and refractory hypertension have a higher mortality rate and are hospitalized more frequently than veterans living in urban or suburban areas. They also face particularly unique challenges in accessing nephrology specialty care. Previous studies suggest virtual nephrology care can be used to increase access to care for veterans. The purpose of this study was to examine veteran's perceptions and experiences with a veteran administration (VA) virtual nephrology program. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with forty-fo

Trends in hysterectomy rates among women veterans in the US Department of Veterans Affairs.

BACKGROUND: Prior studies demonstrate a higher prevalence of hysterectomy among veterans compared with nonveterans. While studies identify overall decreasing hysterectomy rates in the United States, none report rates of hysterectomy among women veterans. Given the increasing numbers of women veterans using Veterans Affairs health care, there is an ongoing need to ensure high-quality gynecology care. Therefore, it is important to examine current hysterectomy trends, including proportion of minimally invasive surgeries, among veterans using Veterans Affairs health care. OBJECTIVE: Our objective

Housing and Urban Development-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing Vouchers and Veterans' Homelessness, 2007-2017.

Objectives. To determine what role the 88 000 Housing and Urban Development-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) vouchers for permanent supportive housing among US veterans distributed between 2008 and 2017 played in the significant fall in veterans' homelessness over the same time period.Methods. Using a panel data set at the Continuum of Care level over the 2007 to 2017 period, we correlated changes in vouchers with permanent supportive housing units and measures of homelessness. To reduce concerns about omitted variables bias, we used a 2-stage least-squares procedure. The instrum

Prescription Opioid Use Among Seriously Mentally Ill Veterans Nationally in the Veterans Health Administration.

Frequent prescription opioid use has been recognized as a growing problem but there have been no studies specifically among veterans with serious mental illness (SMI). National data from the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) during Fiscal Year 2012 show that VHA patients with SMI receive more opioid prescriptions than other veterans. Additionally, high numbers of opioid prescriptions is associated with greater use of anxiolytics/sedative-hypnotics, drug dependence and COPD-all of which pose an increased risk of respiratory depression and falls and warrant substantial caution and improved co

The Veterans Millennium Health Care and Benefits Act. Department of Veterans Affairs. Final rule.

This document amends Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) adjudication regulations to reflect changes made by the Veterans Millennium Health Care and Benefits Act. These changes concern payment of dependency and indemnity compensation to the surviving spouses of certain former prisoners of war; the provision of health care, education and home loan benefits to surviving spouses upon termination of their remarriages; and the addition of bronchiolo-alveolar carcinoma to the list of diseases that VA presumes are the result of exposure to radiation during active military service.

Cardiovascular Care in Women Veterans.

Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death for women in the United States. Of the 1.3 million active duty service members, 16.3% are currently women, and the number of women veterans is expected to increase. Women veterans have higher rates of cardiovascular disease than civilian women and present a unique population. We focus on 5 key areas regarding cardiovascular disease care for women veterans: (1) the rapidly changing demographic; (2) prevalence of traditional risk factors; (3) prevalence of less traditional risk factors (eg, homelessness, military sexual trauma, and mental h
