Prostate cancer incidence and outcomes among Vietnam veterans receiving care in the Veterans Health Administration.

BACKGROUND: Agent Orange exposure (AOE) is considered a presumptive cause of prostate cancer (PCa) in the Veterans Affairs (VA) population; however, cohort studies reported inconsistent associations of AOE and PCa incidence and outcomes. In this nationwide cohort study, Vietnam veterans who received VA care were evaluated for associations of AOE and PCa incidence and adverse outcomes. METHODS: Vietnam veterans 17-25 years old during military service (1962-1971) who received VA health care between 2005 and 2020 were stratified by presumptive AOE assigned by the VA and followed until death from

Gonorrhea and Chlamydia Testing and Case Rates Among Women Veterans in the Veterans Health Administration.

BACKGROUND: United States (US) rates of sexually transmitted infection (STI) in women, especially gonorrhea and chlamydia, have increased over the past decade. Women Veterans may be at increased risk for STIs due to high rates of sexual trauma. Despite the availability of effective diagnostic tests and evidence-based guidelines for annual screening among sexually active women under age 25, screening rates for gonorrhea and chlamydia remain low in the US and among Veterans. OBJECTIVE: To examine patient characteristics and health system factors associated with gonorrhea and chlamydia testing a

Utilization patterns of homeless and health care services by homeless veterans in the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Ending veteran homelessness remains a priority within the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (VA). Efforts over the past decade have led to encouraging declines in veteran homelessness but have required significant funds and resources. Analysis of clinical characteristics and utilization patterns of veterans accessing VA homeless programing can clarify the needs of and inform treatment for this subset of the veteran population. Veterans were categorized according to low, moderate, or high rates of VA homeless service use from 2005 to 2024 (N = 1,086,852) and compared based on demographic profi

Agent Orange exposure and risk of death in Korean Vietnam veterans: Korean Veterans Health Study.

BACKGROUND: Agent Orange (AO) was a mixture of phenoxy herbicides, containing several dioxin impurities including 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD). Various military herbicides, including AO, were sprayed by the US military and allied forces for military purposes during the Vietnam War. This study was performed to identify the associations between the AO exposure and mortality in Korean Vietnam veterans. METHODS: From 1 January 1992 to 31 December 2005, 180 639 Korean Vietnam veterans were followed up for vital status and cause of death. The AO exposure index was based on the proximi

Agent Orange exposure and disease prevalence in Korean Vietnam veterans: the Korean veterans health study.

Between 1961 and 1971, military herbicides were used by the United States and allied forces for military purposes. Agent Orange, the most-used herbicide, was a mixture of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid, and contained an impurity of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD). Many Korean Vietnam veterans were exposed to Agent Orange during the Vietnam War. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between Agent Orange exposure and the prevalence of diseases of the endocrine, nervous, circulatory, respiratory, and digestive systems. The A

The burden of hostility in U.S. Veterans: Results from the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study.

Hostility is associated with substantial mental and physical health consequences. Population-based data regarding the nature and longitudinal course of hostility in U. S. veterans are scarce. We analyzed data from 2157 U. S. veterans who participated in the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study, a nationally representative, prospective cohort study of U. S. veterans. We identified the prevalence of longitudinal courses of hostility (chronic, increasing, decreasing, or no hostility). We then evaluated relationships between sociodemographic, risk, and protective correlates measured at

Adverse Childhood Experiences and Adult Health Outcomes Among Veteran and Non-Veteran Women.

BACKGROUND: Women veterans represent a vulnerable population with unique health needs and disparities in access to care. One constellation of exposures related to subsequent poor health includes adverse childhood experiences (ACEs; e.g., physical and sexual child abuse), though research on impacts of ACEs among women veterans is limited. METHODS: Data were drawn from the 2010 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System for the 11 states that included the ACE module (n=36,485). Weighted chi-squared tests and multivariable logistic regression were used to assess the prevalence of ACEs among wome

Reproductive Health Management for the Care of Women Veterans.

There are more than 2 million women veterans living in the United States. Many women do not identify themselves as veterans. As women's health care providers, it is important to understand and recognize the potentially complex health and social needs of women veterans and the role of military service on their lives. The reproductive health needs of women veterans may be shaped by their military experiences and coexisting medical or mental health conditions. Military sexual trauma and combat exposure are common causes of posttraumatic stress disorder and can affect overall health and well-being

Adverse Childhood Experiences and the Mental Health of Veterans.

Many U.S. Veterans have experienced the burdens of mental illness and suicide. The current article focuses on Veterans who served from 2001-2015. Although combat exposure and suicidal ideation are linked, approximately one half of all suicides among Active Duty service members (who have served since 2001) occurred among those who never deployed. Researchers who sought additional risks for suicide found that Veterans have greater odds of adversities in childhood than the general population. Adverse childhood experiences are stressful and traumatic experiences, including abuse and neglect, as we

Using Self-Identified Gender Identity Data to Advance Health Equity Among Transgender and Gender Diverse Veterans in the Veterans Health Administration.

BACKGROUND: Identification of transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people has been limited to diagnoses and text rather than self-identified gender identity (SIGI), representing a subset of TGD people. In 2017, the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) implemented SIGI, allowing for precise identification of TGD veterans, including subgroups (transgender man, transgender woman, and nonbinary). OBJECTIVES: Health conditions, adverse social determinants of health (SDOH), and health care utilization were compared among veterans (1) identified by SIGI only, both SIGI and diagnosis/text, diagnosis/

Diagnoses of muscular dystrophy in a veterans health system.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Early diagnosis of a chronic neuromuscular disease such as muscular dystrophy (MD) generally excludes an individual from active-duty military service. However, it is not known whether veterans are sometimes diagnosed with milder forms of MD at a later timepoint. We aimed to determine the prevalence of MD in a veterans health system. METHODS: We abstracted clinical and genetic test data on patients who received care for a diagnosis of MD at the North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System between 2008 and 2021. We then determined which of these individuals would meet c
