The effects of vibration on explosive and reactive strength when applying individualized vibration frequencies.

The aim of this study was to assess the effects of 8 weeks of whole-body vibrations on explosive and reactive leg strength. Thirty-three physically active students took part in the study and were randomly assigned to an individualized-vibration group, a fixed-vibration group or a control group. The frequency of vibration was set to 30 Hz for the fixed-vibration group, whereas the frequency for the individualized-vibration group was determined by monitoring the participants' EMGrms activity. The participants in the two vibration groups were exposed three times a week for 8 weeks to a series of

[Automated diagnosis of vibration disease].

Based on a multidimensional discriminant analysis of the clinical and physiological characteristics derived as a result of examination of 593 miners, classification functions were plotted, allowing the diagnosis of vibratory disease in the automatic mode by means of mathematic computations. Functional indicators of skin sensitivity, particularly vibratory, dynamometry, rheovasography and thermography of the hand and fingers, a "white spot" symptom, and characteristics derived on a mathematic analysis of heart rhythm were established to be informative for automated diagnosis. The diagnosis was

Cardiovascular reflexes during vibration stress.

Vibration disease due to hand-held vibratory tools has various symptoms and signs which can be characterized by the severity. They include disorders of the central and autonomic nervous systems, as well as peripheral system disorders. The mechanism of Raynaud's phenomenon in vibration disease is proposed to be: Vibration and cold affect the local vessels and nerves directly, leading to enhanced release of chemical vasoconstrictors. Vibration, noise, cold, ergonomic and biodynamic conditions, and emotional stress during work result in disorders of the central and autonomic nervous systems. In t

Vibration-induced carpal tunnel syndrome.

The authors reviewed the median nerve decompressions performed by the senior author between 1976 and 1985 and found 787 surgical cases, of which 42 potentially occurred secondary to the use of vibration tools. All 42 patients presented with the classic history of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and demonstrated a positive electromyography (EMG) or nerve-conduction study (NCS). Another six nonoperated patients with positive EMG or NCS were added to the group for a total of 48 patients with what the authors term vibration-induced carpal tunnel syndrome (VI-CTS). Of the 42 operated cases, 23 were bi

[Vibration hazards in quarry workers].

Vibration hazards were surveyed in a population of quarry workers using chipping hammers and to a lesser extent, rock drills. Sixty-nine male quarry workers, aged 49.1 +/- 8.7 and exposed to vibration for 16.4 +/- 5.1 years, were surveyed in 1981-82. They were exposed to vibration for about 2-4 hours per days, mainly under a piece-work pay system. They had a high prevalence of Raynaud's phenomenon (36.2%) and numbness in upper extremities (53.6%). It is considered that the high prevalence was mainly due to large vibration levels in chipping hammers and rock drills and long daily exposure time.

The effects of vibration on workers.

Therapists working in the area of work rehabilitation have seen the incidence of cumulative trauma disorders from vibration increase dramatically over the past decade. Vibration affects millions of workers each year. The effects of vibration can be seen in either a segmental or whole-body fashion. The purpose of this article is to review the literature that examines whole-body vibration, hand-arm vibration syndrome, and suggestions for preventative strategies are presented. This article concludes with a case study in order to assist the reader in synthesizing the relevant information provided.

A Vibration-Based Concussion Mechanism.

Concussion biomechanics are understood through rigid-body head kinematics during long-duration impacts. However, short-duration head impacts represent a distinct loading regime in which skull vibration and flexural deformation may play a role in injury mechanisms not captured by traditional metrics. Here, I suggest that transient excitation of skull flexural modes could help explain how impacts with low-magnitude rigid-body accelerations produce concussion-like signs and symptoms. This mechanism remains a hypothesis and is intended to complement, not replace, established strain-based mechanism

Vibration exercise: the potential benefits.

The aim of this review was to examine the physiological effects of vibration exercise (VbX), including the cardiovascular indices and to elucidate its potential use for those with compromised health. VbX has long been acknowledged as a potential modality in sport, exercise, and health sectors. Muscle force and power have been shown to increase after VbX for athletes, the aged and those with diseases, where neural factors are thought to be the main contributor. Further, similarities to the tonic vibration reflex have been used to propose that the muscle spindle plays a role in activating the mu

Temporomandibular joint vibration in bruxers.

Temporomandibular joint vibration is considered an important physical sign of joint dysfunction and/or joint pathology. The aim of this study was to compare the difference of joint vibration between bruxers and asymptomatic individuals, evaluate the effect of bruxism on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and the association between bruxism and temporomandibular disorders. Twenty-four (24) bruxers and 16 asymptomatic subjects were included in the study. Bilateral joint vibrations with jaw tracking were recorded using a TMJ detecting instrument during rhythmic jaw opening and closing movement. Th

Vibration training: benefits and risks.

The main results of our recent several studies, i.e. the measurements of vibration training results for single case and group studies as well as the cardiovascular parameter measurements during vibrations and the corresponding hydrodynamic analysis, are summarized. Our studies and previous work all confirm that vibration training is an effective training method in order to improve maximal strength and flexibility as well as various other factors if the training is properly designed. Some recommendations regarding the proper ranges of frequencies, amplitudes and exposure duration of vibration t

Health effects of mechanical vibration.

In this study, the health disorders caused by occupational exposure to whole-body vibration (WBV) and hand-transmitted vibration (HTV) are reviewed. Long-term occupational exposure to intense WBV is associated with an increased risk for disorders of the lumbar spine and the connected nervous system. With a lower probability, the neck-shoulder, the gastrointestinal system, the female reproductive organs, the peripheral veins, and the cochleo-vestibular system are also assumed to be affected by WBV. However, there is a weak epidemiologic support for WBV-induced disorders of organ systems other t

[Neck vibration: usefulness in neurotology].

INTRODUCTION: Recently, mechanical vibration on the neck has begun to be used to improve diagnostic sensitivity in patients who have vestibular disorders. METHOD: We review results of studies of this stimulus in normal subjects and patients with vestibular lesions: the ocular responses, changes in the subjective straight ahead, and postural changes generated by the neck vibration. CONCLUSION: Although the underlying mechanism for the responses to neck vibration remains uncertain, it is an excellent addition to the neurotologic exam since it allows us demonstrate vestibular deficit with great

Platelet activation during hand vibration.

The level of beta-thromboglobulin, the circulating platelet aggregate ratio and platelet sensitivity to aggregation with adenosine 5'-diphosphate (ADP) and collagen were assessed in 12 control subjects, 16 patients with vibration white finger (VWF) and 15 patients with primary Raynaud's disease; this was done before and after a 1-min exposure to hand vibration. The beta-thromboglobulin level increased significantly in controls, from a median (interquartile range) of 35.5 (22-47) to 47.5 (27-52) ng/ml, and in the VWF group from 44.0 (39-60) to 47.5 (42-109) ng/ml (P < 0.005). Heat, cold, noise, and vibration.

Exposure to a cold environment induces a number of physiological alterations, the most serious being hypothermia. This state can occur in all individuals, but the very young and the elderly are more susceptible. Environmental and industrially generated high ambient temperature can place further stress on aged individuals and workers, resulting in a complex symptom picture. Morbidity and death may result from such exposures. Causative factors have been identified. Noise exposure induces hearing losses above those secondary to the aging process. Psychophysiological effects during noise exposure

[Psychoemotional status in vibration disease].

193 patients affected with vibration disease caused by local vibration and 111 healthy people were examined to evaluate their psychoemotional state. A comparative analysis of the data obtained proved high prevalence of pathologic emotional disorders, while somatic manifestations of anxiety against social introversion were mostly predominant among them. A dynamic investigation confirmed both the objectiveness of the disorders in question and expedience of specific approaches to their therapy.

Body height changes from vibration.

A device for measuring body height is reported (SD, 1 mm). The change in body height before and after vibration and quiet sitting respectively was studied in eight men aged 22-44 years who were free of back pain. The vibration frequency was set at 5 Hz and the acceleration at 2 msec-2. Subjects were asked to report for testing within 2 hours after arising from bed. Body height was measured before and immediately after vibration or sitting exposure and the measurements were repeated at different intervals up to 2 hours after the experiment. Results show that exposure to vibration increases the
