For the sustainable farming of disease-free and healthy shrimps, antimicrobial use is frequent nowadays in shrimp-cultured system. Considering the serious impact of global antimicrobial resistance (AMR), the present study was focused to investigate the prevalence of antimicrobial-resistant vibrios among infected shrimps (Penaeus vannamei) from two brackish water-cultured farms. Diverse species of vibrios viz. V. alginolyticus, V. parahaemolyticus, V. cholerae, V. mimicus, and V. fluvialis along with Aeromonas hydrophila, A. salmonicida and Shewanella algae were recovered from the shrimps on TC

BACKGROUND: Incidence of vibriosis infections caused by several emerging Vibrio species has increased in the United States, including V. alginolyticus (Va), V. cholerae (Vc), V. fluvialis (Vf), and V. mimicus (Vm), which contribute substantially to overall vibriosis burden. The objective of this analysis was to characterize the epidemiology of these emerging Vibrio species using US national surveillance data.
METHODS: We conducted an analysis of national Cholera and Other Vibrio Illness Surveillance (COVIS) data from 1988 to 2024. Spline regression was used to estimate trends. Counterfactual

Vibrio cholerae strains producing cholera toxin (CT) and toxin co-regulated pilus (TCP) and belonging to O1 and O139 serogroups are responsible for cholera. However, non-CT producing V. cholerae from non-O1/non-O139 serogroups have been increasingly isolated from diarrheal stools and extra-intestinal infections. In this study, we have developed a multiplex PCR for the simultaneous detection of heat-stable enterotoxin (stn), type three-secretion system (vopF), and cholix toxin (chxA), along with CT (ctx) in V. cholerae strains. As other species from genus Vibrio carries homologous virulence gen

BACKGROUND: Vibrio cholerae, the etiologic agent of cholera, is indigenous to aquatic environments. The V. cholerae genome consists of two chromosomes; the smallest of these harbors a large gene capture and excision system called the superintegron (SI), of ~120 kbp. The flexible nature of the SI that results from gene cassette capture, deletion and rearrangement is thought to make it a hotspot of V. cholerae diversity, but beyond the basic structure it is not clear if there is a core genome in the SI and if so how it is structured. The aim of this study was to explore the core genome structure

Antimicrobial and multidrug-resistant bacteria are a major problem worldwide and, consequently, the surveillance of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and assessment of the dissemination routes are essential. We hypothesized that migratory birds, coming from various environments, would carry more numerous Vibrio strains than sedentary species, with increased risk to be passed to their contacts or environment in habitats they transit or nest in. Similarly, we presumed that strains from migratory birds will show multidrug resistance. A total of 170 oral and rectal swabs were collected from wild birds

Non-O1 and non-O139 Vibrio cholerae (NOVC) strains rarely harbor the cholera toxin gene and are typically associated with mild, self-limiting gastroenteritis. However, an increasing number of reports in recent years have described severe gastroenteritis or extraintestinal infections with fatal outcomes, particularly in immunocompromised individuals, such as those with underlying conditions including cirrhosis. Here, we describe a case of severe gastroenteritis caused by V. cholerae serogroup O24, following the consumption of seafood during prolong prednisolone treatment for systemic lupus eryt

We reviewed and analyzed the existing data on vibriosis in Southeast Asia to better understand its burden and prevalent causal agents. We searched PubMed, Web of Science, and EMBASE for studies published between January 2000 and April 2024. A random-effects meta-analysis was used to estimate the pooled isolation rate of non-cholera Vibrio species. Among the 1385 retrieved studies, 22 met the inclusion criteria for the systematic review and 11 were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled isolation rate of non-cholera Vibrio species among diarrheal patients was 5.0 %. Most species that caused

Using comparative genomics, we identified a new variant of the Vibrio Seventh Pandemic Island-I (VSP-I). Results of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) screening for both known VSP-I variants indicate that the novel variant is present only in non-O1/non-O139 strains of V. cholerae and Vibrio mimicus. Comparative genomics revealed little sequence divergence in the seventh pandemic VSP-I; however, a second insertion site located on the smaller chromosome was identified. Although the seventh pandemic VSP-I genomic island was detected in all seventh pandemic V. cholerae serogroup O1 and O139 isolates

Sedentary chromosomal integrons (SCIs) are large integrons that harbor extensive arrays of gene cassettes and constitute major reservoirs of bacterial genetic diversity. In Vibrio, SCI cassettes are flanked by species-associated attC repeats, here referred to as Vibrio species repeats (VXRs). Although SCIs have been proposed as ancestral sources of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), the extent to which SCI-associated ARGs are exchanged among Vibrio species remains poorly understood. To investigate the dynamics of SCI-associated ARGs, we analyzed 37,812 genomes representing 181 Vibrio species.

Vibrio species are waterborne ubiquitous organisms capable of causing diseases in humans and animals and the occurrence of infections caused by pathogenic Vibrio species among humans have increased globally. This reemergence is attributed to environmental impacts such as global warming and pollution. Africa is most vulnerable to waterborne infections caused by these pathogens because of lack of good water stewardship and management. This study was carried out to provide an in-depth inquiry into the occurrence of pathogenic Vibrio species in water sources and wastewater across Africa. In this r

This report describes Vibrio seventh pandemic island II (VSP-II) and three novel variants revealed by comparative genomics of 23 Vibrio cholerae strains and their presence among a large and diverse collection of V. cholerae isolates. Three VSP-II variants were reported previously and our results demonstrate the presence of three novel VSP-II in clinical and environmental V. cholerae marked by major deletions and genetic rearrangements. A new VSP-II cluster was found in the seventh pandemic V. cholerae O1 El Tor strain CIRS101, which is dominant (95%) among the recent (2004-2007) seven pandemic

Bacteria of the genus Vibrio are normal habitants of the aquatic environment and play roles for biocontrole of aquatic ecosystem, but some species are believed to be human pathogens. These species can be classified into two groups according to the types of diseases they cause: the gastrointestinal infections and the extraintestinal infections. The pathogenic species produce various pathogenic factors including enterotoxin, hemolysin, cytotoxin, protease, siderophore, adhesive factor, and hemagglutinin. We studied various pathogenic factors of vibrios with special emphasis on protease and hemol

The colonisation of planktonic copepod integument by bacteria belonging to the family of Vibrionaceae is a well described phenomenon. In this study, besides reporting on the occurrence of Vibrionaceae and other enteropathogens, we further report on the bacterial attachment to the Estuarine copepod Acartia margalefi in a faecal polluted coastal lagoon near Naples, Southern Italy. In addition, we also performed a laboratory experiment to study the ability of 7 bacterial strains (Vibrio cholerae non-Ol, V. mimicus, V. parahaemolyticus, V. alginolyticus, Aeromonas hydrophila, Escherichia coli and

OBJECTIVE: To understand the genetic structures and variations of the superintegron (SI) in Vibrio cholerae isolated in the seventh cholera pandemic.
METHODS: Polymerase chain reaction scanning and fragment sequencing were used. Sixty toxigenic V. cholerae O1 El Tor strains isolated between 1961 and 2008 were analyzed.
RESULTS: Some variations were found, including insertions, replacements, and deletions. Most of the deletions were probably the result of recombination between V. cholerae repeat sequences. The majority of the variations clustered together. The SIs of the strains isolated in t

Seven different monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) specific to only Vibrio cholerae were produced using a combination of five representative serotypes of V. cholerae for immunization. The first three MAbs (VC-93, VC-82 and VC-223) were specific to the V. cholerae serogroup O1 with different avidity for the serotypes O1 Inaba and O1 Ogawa. The fourth and the fifth MAbs were specific to V. cholerae O139 (VC-812) or O141 (VC-191) serogroups, respectively. The sixth MAb (VC-26) bound to all three serogroups of V. cholerae. UNLABELLED: Gaseous chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is one of the most promising air disinfectants. In this study, an ultra-low concentration of ClO2 gas (< 1.2 mg/m3) was generated in an office at various levels of humidity and illuminance to investigate the decay law. The disinfection efficiency and metal corrosiveness of ultra-low concentrations of ClO2 gas were also studied using an experimental chamber. At 48% and 75% humidity, the decay rate constants of ClO2 gas were 0.0034 min-1 and 0.0036 min-1, respectively. The rate of decline of the ClO2 concentration increased as the humidity of the envir
