The genus Vibrio is a member of the family Vibrionaceae, and among their disease-causing species, Vibrio vulnificus, a lactose-positive gram-negative bacillus, is one of the most virulent pathogen of the noncholerae vibrios. We describe the case of a 39-year-old male patient, who was using immunosuppressive therapy, admitted to the hospital for liver transplantation. Twelve hours later, the patient presented high fever, myalgia, anuria and erythematous plaques on lower limbs, of rapid growth and proximal progression. The patient was treated with ceftriaxone, meropenem and oxacillin, however he

Bacteria in the genus Vibrio are ubiquitous in estuarine and coastal waters. Some species (including Vibrio cholerae and Vibrio vulnificus) are known human pathogens causing ailments like cholera, diarrhea, or septicemia. Notably, V. vulnificus can also cause a severe systemic infection (known as vibriosis) in eels raised in aquaculture facilities. Water samples were periodically collected from the estuary of the Asahi River, located in the southern part of Okayama City, Japan. These samples were directly plated onto CHROMagar Vibrio plates, and colonies displaying turquoise-blue coloration we

During the summer of 2006, several wound infections - of which three were fatal - caused by Vibrio cholerae were reported from patients who had been exposed to water from the Baltic Sea. Before these reports, we initiated a sampling project investigating the occurrence of potential human pathogenic V. cholerae, Vibrio vulnificus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus in The Sound between Sweden and Denmark. The Blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) was used as an indicator to follow the occurrence of vibrios over time. Molecular analyses showed high frequencies of the most potent human pathogenic Vibrio spp.; 53%

The bacterial species, Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio vulnificus, are ubiquitous in estuaries and coastal waters throughout the world, but they also happen to be important human pathogens. They are concentrated by filter-feeding shellfish which are often consumed raw or undercooked, providing an important potential route of entry for an infective dose of these bacteria. Vibrio parahaemolyticus can cause abdominal cramping, nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, chills and fever. Vibrio vulnificus can cause similar gastrointestinal-related symptoms, but can also spread to the bloodstream, resulting i

Vibrio vulnificus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus are ubiquitous Gram-negative bacterial pathogens found naturally in marine and estuarine waters, and are a leading cause of seafood-associated bacterial illness. These pathogens are commonly reported in the USA and in many Asian countries, including China, Japan and Taiwan; however, there is growing concern that V. vulnificus and V. parahaemolyticus may represent an important and increasing clinical problem in Europe. Several factors underlie the need for a greater understanding of these non-cholera vibrios within a European context. First, there i

We present a case of Vibrio vulnificus septic shock and cellulitis in a patient with chronic liver disease that occurred after obtaining a leg tattoo with subsequent seawater exposure in the Gulf of Mexico. Initial suspicion for V. vulnificus was high and he was started on empiric doxycycline and ceftriaxone at admission. Blood and wound cultures grew oxidase positive and comma-shaped Gram-negative rods ultimately confirmed to be V. vulnificus. Despite aggressive initial treatment, the patient developed septic shock and died. This case highlights the association of chronic liver disease and hi

Vibrio vulnificus is a Gram-negative aquatic bacterium first isolated by the United States (US) Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 1964. This bacterium is part of the normal microbiota of estuarine waters and occurs in high numbers in molluscan shellfish around the world, particularly in warmer months. Infections in humans are derived from consumption of seafood produce and from water exposure. Vibrio vulnificus is a striking and enigmatic human pathogen, yet many aspects related to its biology, genomics, virulence capabilities and epidemiology remain elusive and poorly unders

Vibrio vulnificus is a waterborne pathogen that was responsible for an outbreak of severe soft-tissue infections among fish farmers and fish consumers in Israel. Several factors have been shown to be associated with virulence. However, the transcriptome profile of the pathogen during human infection has not been determined yet. We compared the transcriptome profile, using RNA sequencing, of a human-pathogenic strain harvested directly from tissue of a patient suffering from severe soft-tissue infection with necrotizing fasciitis, with the same strain and three other environmental strains grown

A 46-year-old man was transferred to the emergency department and suspected of having a deep vein thrombosis. The patient reported swelling and pain in both lower legs for 16 hours. His medical history included liver cirrhosis secondary to alcohol. A detailed history revealed raw fish consumption 1 day before admission. Within 2 hours of arrival, several hemorrhagic bullae developed in the color-changed lesions of both lower legs. The patient's level of consciousness deteriorated to a stupor. He was admitted to the intensive care unit. Despite intensive management with a ventilator, fluid resu

Ocular Vibrio vulnificus infections are quite rare, and all previously reported cases have been associated with exposure to seafood and seawater. Here, we report a case of endogenous endophthalmitis caused by V. vulnificus, occurring after the ingestion of raw seafood. This case was not associated with any cutaneous or other severe systemic manifestations.

Vibrio vulnificus infection commonly presents as sepsis or wound infection. A case of alcoholic liver cirrhosis developed acute left heel pain and swelling 2 days after ingesting raw fish. Two sets of blood cultures indicated V. vulnificus. HLA-B27 was negative. Ultrasonography revealed left Achilles tendinitis. Fluid aspirated from the left retrocalcaneal bursa was sterile. The patient recovered completely 3 weeks after treatment. To our knowledge, V. vulnificus septicaemia with Achilles tendinitis, which may be the only indication of reactive arthritis (ReA), has not been reported previously

After eating raw shellfish, 62-year-old man suffered from watery diarrhea and leg pain. The disease developed to septicemia and necrotizing fasciitis of bilateral lower extremities. Vibrio vulnificus was isolated from wound. He was treated with antibiotics, surgical debridement and hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and consequently was saved. Effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on V. vulnificus infection was discussed.

Gram-negative Vibrio species secrete multifunctional autoprocessing repeats-in-toxin (MARTX) toxins associated with bacterial pathogenesis. Here, the cross-reactivity and cross-protectivity of mAbs against V. vulnificus RtxA1/MARTXVv was evaluated. Passive administration of any of these mAbs (21RA, 24RA, 46RA, 47RA and 50RA) provided strong protection against lethal V. cholerae infection. Interestingly, 24RA and 46RA, which map to the cysteine protease domain of V. cholerae MARTXVc , inhibited CPD autocleavage in vitro; this process is involved in V. cholerae pathogenesis. These results genera

Vibrio vulnificus is a Gram-negative bacterium which is found in marine environments and where there is a partly enclosed coastal body of water with one or more rivers or streams flowing into it, and with a free connection to the open sea. The infection by these bacteria can cause primary septicemia by two mechanisms: upon consuming crustaceans, mollusks and some fish (filtering shellfish) raw or barely cooked or by an open injury in contact with seawater. The patients with infections of the primary injury by Vibrio vulnificus developed contaminated painful cellulitis that progresses quickly a

Vibrio vulnificus can cause severe infections in humans and persons with preexisting liver disorders are especially at risk. In this paper we report what is to our knowledge the first fatal case of V. vulnificus infection in Denmark. The patient was a 68-year-old man with a history of chronic lymphatic leukemia and hepatic cirrhosis. Physicians should be aware of the clinical manifestations of this disease and should be especially attentive to patients at risk of acquiring the infection if there has been possible exposure to V. vulnificus by contact with seawater or contaminated material such

Vibrio vulnificus is a facultative anaerobic, alkalophilic, halophilic, mesophilic, Gram-negative bacterium that can cause severe wound infection, sepsis and diarrhea. This paper reported a case of 85-year-old male patient infected with Vibrio vulnificus due to being stabbed by a sea shrimp. This patient also had diabetes with a long history of alcoholism. Due to bacterial pathogenicity and the patient's underlying diseases, his condition deteriorated rapidly. Based on the rapid diagnosis of Vibrio vulnificus using the next-generation sequencing(NGS)technology and blood culture method, as well

Vibrio vulnificus (V. vulnificus) is an estuarine bacterium that is capable of causing rapidly fatal infection in humans. Proper polarization and bactericidal activity of macrophages play essential roles in defending against invading pathogens. How macrophages limit V. vulnificus infection remains not well understood. Here we report that tuberous sclerosis complex 1 (TSC1) is crucial for the regulation of V. vulnificus-induced macrophage polarization, bacterial clearance, and cell death. Mice with myeloid-specific deletion of TSC1 exhibit a significant reduction of survival time after V. vulni

Vibrio vulnificus infection was first reported as a necrotizing skin disease of unknown cause in Korea in 1979. In the early days, this disease caused panic across the country due to dreadful wound and its high mortality. Since then, the nature of the disease has become better understood and the overwhelming public fear has dissipated. However, there are still a certain number of infected patients each year and the high mortality rate remains a major health and social problem. From this review on historical and clinical perspective, better understanding of V. vulnificus infection would provide
