Overwhelming post-splenectomy infection with Plesiomonas shigelloides in a patient cured of Hodgkin's disease. A case report.

The immune deficiencies of Hodgkin's disease persist to some degree even after the patients are clinically cured; these may be amplified by loss of splenic immunologic functions after staging laparotomy and splenectomy. The authors submit a case report wherein a bacterium of relatively low virulence, Plesiomonas shigelloides, was associated with a rapidly fulminant septicemia, disseminated intravascular coagulation, Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome, and death in a splenectomized patient free of Hodgkin's disease for approximately five years. This emphasizes the need for prolonged observation,

Prevalence of salmonellae, shigellae and Plesiomonas shigelloides in dogs in Zaria, Nigeria.

The prevalence of salmonellae, shigellae and Plesiomonas shigelloides among 303 dogs in Zaria was determined. Salmonella serotypes including S. kofandoka, a new serotype, were recovered from three dogs giving a proportion of 1.0%. None of the dogs from which salmonellae were isolated was showing evidence of gastroenteritis at the time of presentation. Neither Shigella nor Plesiomonas shigelloides was isolated from any of the dogs.

Chemical characterization of enterobacterial common antigen isolated from Plesiomonas shigelloides ATCC 14029.

Serologically characterized samples of enterobacterial common antigen (ECA) from Plesiomonas shigelloides, Salmonella montevideo and Shigella sonnei were investigated by chemical methods including methylation and NMR techniques. All showed the same sugar composition and contained a lipid moiety with palmitic acid as main fatty acid and with a phosphodiester group. Additional enzymatic studies, reported in the preceding paper, provided evidence that the lipid moiety is an L-glycerophosphatidyl residue attached via a phosphodiester linkage to C-1 of GlcNAc as the reducing end of the ECA sugar ch

[Agglutination of hen egg-yolk immunoglobulins (IgY) against Salmonella enterica, serovar enteritidis].

Two groups of 6 laying hens were used to produce IgY. In the vaccinated group (V), hens were injected by intramuscular route with two doses of a Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis bacterin at 20-day interval. In the control group (T) hens remained unvaccinated. Four IgY extractions were performed on the egg production of both groups. The first two extractions were carried out using the yolks obtained from the eggs produced during the 4th and 5th post-vaccination week (extracts 1V and 1T) and the other two using the ones from the 6th, 7th and 8th week (2V and 2T). Starting from the extract

The replication initiator of the cholera pathogen's second chromosome shows structural similarity to plasmid initiators.

The conserved DnaA-oriC system is used to initiate replication of primary chromosomes throughout the bacterial kingdom; however, bacteria with multipartite genomes evolved distinct systems to initiate replication of secondary chromosomes. In the cholera pathogen, Vibrio cholerae, and in related species, secondary chromosome replication requires the RctB initiator protein. Here, we show that RctB consists of four domains. The structure of its central two domains resembles that of several plasmid replication initiators. RctB contains at least three DNA binding winged-helix-turn-helix motifs, and

Vibrio cholerae hemagglutinin(HA)/protease: An extracellular metalloprotease with multiple pathogenic activities.

Vibrio cholerae of serogroup O1 and O139, the etiological agent of the diarrheal disease cholera, expresses the extracellular Zn-dependent metalloprotease hemagglutinin (HA)/protease also reported as vibriolysin. This enzyme is also produced by non-O1/O139 (non-cholera) strains that cause mild, sporadic illness (i.e. gastroenteritis, wound or ear infections). Orthologs of HA/protease are present in other members of the Vibrionaceae family pathogenic to humans and fish. HA/protease belongs to the M4 neutral peptidase family and displays significant amino acid sequence homology to Pseudomonas ae

Immunity of the guinea pig's eye after vaccination with Shigella sonnei phase I antigen.

A total of 8 doses, each containing 10(9) live or heated cells of pure phase I antigen of Shigella sonnei and Plesiomonas shigelloides, was administered into the conjunctival sac of guinea pigs during a 3-week period. The eyes were challenged with virulent S. sonnei. The vaccines protected the eyes in 50-80% to the minimum infecting dose andin 20-50% to 3 MID. The peak of immunity began to decrease after the 26th day and on the 56th day it was practically nil. Vaccination caused histological changes in the conjunctiva but not in the cornea.

Identifying Bacteria Responsible for Non-Sulphate-Based Hydrogen Sulphide Production in Aquaculture.

The unintended microbiological production of hydrogen sulphide (H2S) poses a significant challenge in engineered systems, including sewage treatment plants, landfills and aquaculture systems. Although sulphur-rich amino acids and other substrates conducive to non-sulphate-based H2S production are frequently present, the capacity and potential of various microorganisms to perform sulphate-free H2S production remain unclear. In this study, we identify the identity, activity and genomic characteristics of bacteria that degrade cysteine to produce H2S in anaerobic enrichment bioreactors seeded wit

Pyruvate production and excretion by the luminous marine bacteria.

During aerobic growth on glucose, several species of luminous marine bacteria exhibited an imcomplete oxidative catabolism of substrate. Pyruvate, one of the products of glucose metabolism, was excreted into the medium during exponential growth and accounted for up to 50% of the substrate carbon metabolized. When glucose was depleted from the medium, the excreted pyruvate was promptly utilized, demonstrating that the cells are capable of pyruvate catabolism. Pyruvate excretion is not a general phenomenon of carbohydrate metabolism since it does not occur during the utilization of glycerol or m

O-versus S-Metal Coordination of the Thiocarboxylate Group: An NMR Study of the Two Tautomeric Forms of the Ga(III)-Photoxenobactin E Complex.

Photoxenobactin E (1) is a natural product with an unusual thiocarboxylic acid terminus recently isolated from an entomopathogenic bacterium. The biosynthetic gene cluster associated with photoxenobactin E, and other reported derivatives, is very similar to that of piscibactin, the siderophore responsible for the iron uptake among bacteria of the Vibrionaceae family, including potential human pathogens. Here, the reisolation of 1 from the fish pathogen Vibrio anguillarum RV22 cultured under iron deprivation, its ability to chelate Ga(III), and the full NMR spectroscopic characterization of the

Epidemiology, pathogenetic mechanism, clinical characteristics, and treatment of Vibrio vulnificus infection: a case report and literature review.

Vibrio vulnificus is a Gram-negative bacterium that belongs to the Vibrionaceae family. It represents a deadly opportunistic human pathogen which grows in water with the proper temperature and salinity, and is mostly acquired from seafood eating or direct contact. In susceptible individuals, a traumatic infection could be fatal, causing severe wound infection and even septic shock, and may require amputation. Global warming plays an important role in the geographical area expanding of Vibrio disease. The pathogenesis of Vibrio vulnificus-associated sepsis is very complex, including iron intake

Bacterial communities associated with Porites white patch syndrome (PWPS) on three western Indian Ocean (WIO) coral reefs.

The scleractinian coral Porites lutea, an important reef-building coral on western Indian Ocean reefs (WIO), is affected by a newly-reported white syndrome (WS) the Porites white patch syndrome (PWPS). Histopathology and culture-independent molecular techniques were used to characterise the microbial communities associated with this emerging disease. Microscopy showed extensive tissue fragmentation generally associated with ovoid basophilic bodies resembling bacterial aggregates. Results of 16S rRNA sequence analysis revealed a high variability between bacterial communities associated with PWP

Polymers and immersion time shape bacterial pathogen and antibiotic resistance profiles in aquaculture facilities.

Most equipment used in aquaculture farms is made of plastic. Plastics-associated biofilms may contain potential human pathogenic bacteria (PHPB) and antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB). Understanding the influence of farming practices on the biofouling development and composition is thus essential to control associated microbiological risks. We combined results from metabarcoding analyses, bacterial cultures, and antibiotic susceptibility testing to compare the bacterial pathobiome and resistome associated with plastic aquaculture equipment, including two polyamide nets and a polyester liner,

Selected bacterial strains protect Artemia spp. from the pathogenic effects of Vibrio proteolyticus CW8T2.

In this study Vibrio proteolyticus CW8T2 has been identified as a virulent pathogen for Artemia spp. Its infection route has been visualized with transmission electron microscopy. The pathogen affected microvilli and gut epithelial cells, disrupted epithelial cell junctions, and reached the body cavity, where it devastated cells and tissues. In vivo antagonism tests showed that preemptive colonization of the culture water with nine selected bacterial strains protected Artemia juveniles against the pathogenic effects. Two categories of the selected strains could be distinguished: (i) strains pr

Characterization of a novel organic solvent tolerant protease from a moderately halophilic bacterium and its behavior in ionic liquids.

An extracellular protease was purified from a novel moderately halophilic bacterium Salinivibrio sp. strain MS-7 by the combination of an acetone precipitation (40-80 %) step and a DEAE-cellulose anion exchange column chromatography. Kinetic parameters of the enzyme exhibited V(max) and K(m) of 130 U/mg and 1.14 mg/ml, respectively, using casein as a substrate. The biochemical properties of the enzyme revealed that the 21-kDa protease had a temperature and pH optimum of 50 °C and 8.0, respectively. The enzyme was strongly inhibited by phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride, Pefabloc SC, chymostatin, an

Gut Microbiota and Biomarkers of Intestinal Barrier Damage in Cirrhosis.

Gut dysbiosis and subclinical intestinal damage are common in cirrhosis. The aim of this study was to examine the association of intestinal damage biomarkers (diamine oxidase [DAO], claudin 3, and intestinal fatty acid binding protein [I-FABP; FABP2]) with the state of the gut microbiota in cirrhosis. The blood levels of DAO were inversely correlated with blood levels of claudin 3, lipopolysaccharide (LPS), presepsin, TNF-α, and the severity of cirrhosis according to Child-Pugh scores. The blood level of I-FABP was directly correlated with the blood level of claudin 3 but not with that of DAO.

Severe Wound Infection with Photobacterium damselae ssp. damselae and Vibrio harveyi, following a Laceration Injury in Marine Environment: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Marine microorganisms are uncommon etiologies of skin and skin structure infections, that is, wound infections. We report a case of severe wound infection, caused by the marine Photobacterium damselae (Vibrionaceae), in a 64-year-old male patient, returning from Australia. The isolate tested positive for pPHDD1, a plasmid conferring high-level virulence. Furthermore, the wound was coinfected with Vibrio harveyi, a halophile bacterium, which has never been reported from human infections before. Identification was achieved by use of Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption-Ionization Time of Flight Mass
