This paper explores automated face and facial landmark detection of neonates, which is an important first step in many video-based neonatal health applications, such as vital sign estimation, pain assessment, sleep-wake classification, and jaundice detection. Utilising three publicly available datasets of neonates in the clinical environment, 366 images (258 subjects) and 89 (66 subjects) were annotated for training and testing, respectively. Transfer learning was applied to two YOLO-based models, with input training images augmented with random horizontal flipping, photo-metric colour distort

OBJECTIVE: Eating behavior during meals in anorexia nervosa (AN) has long been noted to be abnormal, but little research has been done carefully characterizing these behaviors. These eating behaviors have been considered pathological, but are not well understood. The current study sought to quantify ingestive and non-ingestive behaviors during a laboratory lunch meal, compare them to the behaviors of healthy controls (HC), and examine their relationships with caloric intake and anxiety during the meal.
METHOD: A standardized lunch meal was video-recorded for 26 individuals with AN and 10 HC.

Parental perceptions of thirteen patients with DSM III-R borderline personality disorder (BPD) and thirteen without BPD were investigated in video-recorded interviews. The interview records of multifacet parental experiences were reviewed and rated independently by three psychiatrists, blinded to the diagnostic information, on 4-point Likert scale (0-3) on three items of each parent: care, overprotection and neglect and/or hostility on the descriptive basis. The major finding was that BPD patients perceived both parents as less caring and more neglecting and/or hostile than patients without BP

HYPOTHESIS: To propose a new objective video-recording procedure to assess and monitor over time the severity of facial nerve palsy.
BACKGROUND: No objective methods for facial palsy (FP) assessment are universally accepted.
METHODS: The face of subjects presenting with different degrees of facial nerve deficit, as measured by the House-Brackmann (HB) grading system, was videotaped after positioning, at specific points, 10 gray circular markers made of a retroreflective material. Video-recording included the resting position and six ordered facial movements. Editing and data elaboration was

A system is described by means of which the ambulant subject may be video-filmed over several hours with the electroencephalograph superimposed on the same tape, allowing correlations to be observed in the active state. Our first subjects have been girls with Rett syndrome. Requirements are: one portable video camera/recorder, a conventional e.e.g. machine, the 'Medilog 9000' system for prolonged ambulatory recording (Oxford Medical), a specialized video mixer (videogram ForA FVG600, commercially available) a video timer, a conventional video cassette recorder and a television monitor. PURPOSE: To report on the usefulness of adding video recording to routine EEG studies of infants and children with frequent paroxysmal events.
METHODS: We analyzed the efficacy of this diagnostic means during a 4-year period. The decision whether to add video recording was made by the pediatric EEG interpreter at the time of the study. Studies were planned to last between 20 and 30 min, and, if needed, were extended by the EEG interpreter. For most studies, video recording was added from the beginning of EEG recording. In a minority of cases, the addition of video was implemented during the f

Benign neonatal sleep myoclonus is a syndrome characterized by the occurrence of repetitive myoclonic jerks of the extremities exclusively during non-rapid eye movement sleep in the early life of healthy newborns. No etiological factors are present. The onset is within the first 15 days of life with spontaneous disappearance within 3-4 months. These myoclonic events are commonly diagnosed as epileptic seizures. We observed 12 newborns with this clinical pattern; the follow-up ranges from 12 to 60 months. Long-term videopolygraphic electroencephalographic (EEG) monitoring demonstrated normal EE

This paper presents a clinical and electrophysiological analysis of type and duration of seizures recorded by means of long-term video electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring, a method which enables accurate diagnosis of psychogenic pseudoepileptic seizures occurring with or without epileptic seizures. Analysis is based on 1083 patients, hospitalized at our department between 1990 and 1997, with a preliminary diagnosis of epilepsy. Psychogenic pseudoepileptic seizures were diagnosed in 85 patients (7.8%). In 48 patients, pseudoepileptic seizures alone were diagnosed (group 1), whereas 37 patient

BACKGROUND: Use of electronic seizure diaries (e-diaries) by caregivers of children with epileptic spasms is not well understood. We describe the demographic and seizure-related information of children with epileptic spasms captured in a widely used e-diary and explore the potential biases in how caregivers report these data.
METHODS: We analyzed children with epileptic spasms in an e-diary, Seizure Tracker, from 2007 to 2018. We described variables including sex, time of seizure, percentage of spasms occurring as individual spasms (versus in clusters), cluster duration, and number of spasms

INTRODUCTION: Electroencephalography (EEG) recording and drug administration is commonly used for neurological experiments in rats, but is typically cumbersome due the use of multiple lines. We have developed a unique system, which allows long-term simultaneous video-electroencephalography recording, drug infusion and blood sampling in rats.
METHODS: The vEEG/drug infusion system was designed and tested on two contrasting animal models of epilepsy. Animals were implanted with EEG-electrodes and a jugular vein cannula fixed in a head cap, avoiding an additional cable for tethering. In an acute

BACKGROUND: The development of Raspberry Pi-based recording devices for video analyses of drug self-administration studies has been shown to be promising in terms of affordability, customizability, and capacity to extract in-depth behavioral patterns. Yet, most video recording systems are limited to a few cameras making them incompatible with large-scale studies.
NEW METHOD: We expanded the PiRATeMC (Pi-based Remote Acquisition Technology for Motion Capture) recording system by increasing its scale, modifying its code, and adding equipment to accommodate large-scale video acquisition, accompa

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates the interobserver reliability (IR) and diagnostic accuracy of home video in distinguishing sleep-related hypermotor epilepsy (SHE) from disorders of arousal (DoA) among neurologists with varying levels of expertise. Additionally, it assesses the learning effect in nonexpert raters and extrapolates key diagnostic elements and confounding factors.
METHODS: We selected 24 home videos capturing sleep-related events recognized as typical from 12 patients with confirmed SHE and 12 with DoA. During a full-day video session, a panel of 18 experts in epileptology or in

Forty-eight patients, 4 to 24 years of age, with recurring absence seizures were studied prospectively for twenty-seven months. Each patient and his EEG were recorded simultaneously by a multicamera videotape technique and each recording was repeatedly viewed and described in writing by two observers who subsequently resolved any differences by joint viewing. From the 48 patients, 374 clinical absence seizures were recorded and classified according to the International Classification of Epileptic Seizures. Automatisms accompanied at least one attack in 88 per cent of the patients. Mild clonic

We present a validation study for TremAn--a tool for automatic detection of tremor and measurement of its frequency from video recordings. To assess the validity of TremAn we designed a study consisting of tremor assessment from video, by accelerometry and by clinical evaluation using Fahn-Tolosa-Marin scale. 26 patients with essential tremor and 5 healthy volunteers underwent the examination in four standardized positions with focus on the hand tremor. Results showed that the frequencies of tremor measured with TremAn and with accelerometry are closely related, attaining agreement with less t
