Factors affecting treatment efficacy in social phobia: the use of video feedback and individual vs. group formats.

This meta-analysis assessed two potential moderators of treatment efficacy in social phobia: video feedback, and treatment format (i.e., individual vs. group). Eighteen recent (2000-2006) trials including a total of 511 participants were sampled. Effect sizes (Cohen's d's) were calculated for each trial while correcting for measurement error. The Q statistic was used to test (a) heterogeneity across trials and (b) potential moderators. Results indicated that use of video feedback was not a moderator of treatment efficacy and did not significantly affect effect sizes. In contrast, treatment for

Video thoracoscopic dorsal sympathectomy: a new approach.

With the recent popularization of video laparoscopic cholecystectomy comes a renewed interest in thoracoscopy and its clinical applications in intrathoracic disease. Successful video thoracoscopic dorsal sympathectomy was accomplished in a patient with causalgia of the right upper extremity with immediate and complete resolution of pain and vasomotor symptoms. Standard operative approaches to dorsal sympathectomy are technically difficult, having risks of major nerve injury and Horner's syndrome. Video thoracoscopic dorsal sympathectomy obviates these risks and should become the procedure of c

Digital video image capture in establishing positive identification.

Positive identification of skeletonized, decomposed, or disfigured victims lacking clinical records is a difficult endeavor. However, videotapes of family and social activities can be analyzed using the frame isolating technique of video image capture by inexpensive means. A rare skeletal Class III malocclusion and dental peculiarities in a decomposing 3-year old lacking a clinical history were compared to videotapes taken of a suspected victim shortly prior to her disappearance. Overlaying transparent dental tracings from digitized skeletal remains onto selected frames of the videotape (and r

Robust Pulse Rate Measurements from Facial Videos in Diverse Environments.

Pulse wave and pulse rate are important indicators of cardiovascular health. Technologies that can check the pulse by contacting the skin with optical sensors built into smart devices have been developed. However, this may cause inconvenience, such as foreign body sensation. Accordingly, studies have been conducted on non-contact pulse rate measurements using facial videos focused on the indoors. Moreover, since the majority of studies are conducted indoors, the error in the pulse rate measurement in outdoor environments, such as an outdoor bench, car and drone, is high. In this paper, to deal

Routine EEG vs. intensive monitoring in the evaluation of intractable epilepsy.

Appropriate treatment of patients with intractable seizures requires precise identification of the type (or types) of seizure the patient experiences and correlation of this information with data from electroencephalography localizing the focus of the seizure in the brain. For such patients, the technique of "intensive monitoring" has gained rapid acceptance in the past several years as the investigative method of choice.Intensive monitoring usually entails prolonged electroencephalographic recording with simultaneous videotaping of the patient. Another common technique is prolonged monitoring

Diagnosis of laryngomalacia by fiberoptic endoscopy: awake compared with anesthesia-aided technique.

RATIONALE: Fiberoptic flexible laryngoscopy (FFL) is the diagnostic procedure of choice in patients with laryngomalacia. Two techniques can be applied, either when the infant is awake or using anesthesia/sedation. The choice of technique may effect the diagnosis. STUDY OBJECTIVES: To compare the two techniques for diagnosing laryngomalacia. PATIENTS AND INTERVENTIONS: A total of 42 infants who underwent awake fiberoptic laryngoscopy for congenital stridor, in whom either laryngomalacia was diagnosed or no cause for stridor was found, underwent a repeat laryngoscopy using anesthesia/sedation.

A transducer for recording fetal movements and sounds based on an inductive principle.

Recording fetal breathing movements requires a transducer with a large dynamic range. The compliance of the transducer should be matched to the compliance of the maternal abdominal wall in order to pass the very weak acoustic signal caused by heart sounds and fetal breathing movements on to the transducer. The output signal is stored on the hard disc of a personal computer (PC) simultaneously with a control signal indicating the presence of breathing movements. Ultrasound imaging is exclusively used for verification of breathing movements. The images are stored on videotape simultaneously with

Is arthroscopic videotape a reliable tool for describing early joint tissue pathology of the knee?

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to assess the reliability of the videotape scoring system collected during knee arthroscopy for meniscal tears, and to test the consistency with intra-operative findings. METHODS: Fifty-seven patients undergoing arthroscopic treatment of meniscal tears were included in the analysis. The cartilage damage was assessed intra-operatively, at six sites, using the Outerbridge scoring system. The meniscal tears were graded according to the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS) classification. The presence of

Intrinsic velocity differences between larynx raising and larynx lowering.

In this study, 23 subjects produced cyclic transitions between rounded vowels and unrounded vowels as in /o-i-o-i-o-…/ at two specific speaking rates. Rounded vowels are typically produced with a lower larynx position than unrounded vowels. This contrast in vertical larynx position was further amplified by producing the unrounded vowels with a higher pitch than the rounded vowels. The vertical larynx movements of each subject were measured by means of object tracking in laryngeal ultrasound videos. The results indicate that larynx lowering was on average 26% faster than larynx raising, and tha

Classifying Vocal Folds Fixation from Endoscopic Videos with Machine Learning.

Vocal folds motility evaluation is paramount in both the assessment of functional deficits and in the accurate staging of neoplastic disease of the glottis. Diagnostic endoscopy, and in particular videoendoscopy, is nowadays the method through which the motility is estimated. The clinical diagnosis, however, relies on the examination of the videoendoscopic frames, which is a subjective and professional-dependent task. Hence, a more rigorous, objective, reliable, and repeatable method is needed. To support clinicians, this paper proposes a machine learning (ML) approach for vocal cords motility

[Stability and variability of catatonic symptoms in the longitudinal course of illness. Videotape documentation in catatonic schizophrenia].

The symptomatology of a female patient with catatonic schizophrenia is presented with respect to its longitudinal course. The stability and variability of catatonic symptoms are investigated using videotape technique. It is demonstrated that catatonic symptoms are stable in the longitudinal course but due to unsteady arousal the severity of the catatonic symptoms varies markedly. There are fluctuating symptom patterns that dominate the clinical picture: a hyperkinetic form with prevailing restlessness or excitement, with abnormal involuntary movements, stereotypies, and parakinetic movements,

Attention-Based Fusion of Ultrashort Voice Utterances and Depth Videos for Multimodal Person Identification.

Multimodal deep learning, in the context of biometrics, encounters significant challenges due to the dependence on long speech utterances and RGB images, which are often impractical in certain situations. This paper presents a novel solution addressing these issues by leveraging ultrashort voice utterances and depth videos of the lip for person identification. The proposed method utilizes an amalgamation of residual neural networks to encode depth videos and a Time Delay Neural Network architecture to encode voice signals. In an effort to fuse information from these different modalities, we in

Abnormal Activity Recognition from Surveillance Videos Using Convolutional Neural Network.

UNLABELLED: Background and motivation: Every year, millions of Muslims worldwide come to Mecca to perform the Hajj. In order to maintain the security of the pilgrims, the Saudi government has installed about 5000 closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras to monitor crowd activity efficiently. PROBLEM: As a result, these cameras generate an enormous amount of visual data through manual or offline monitoring, requiring numerous human resources for efficient tracking. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop an intelligent and automatic system in order to efficiently monitor crowds and ident

Sleep deprivation in honey bees.

Rest at night in forager honey bees (Apis mellifera) meets essential criteria of sleep. This paper reports the effect of a 12-h total sleep deprivation (SD) by forced activity on the behaviour of these animals. The behaviour of sleep-deprived animals is compared with that of control animals under LD [periodic alternation between light (L) and darkness (D)] 12 : 12 hours. SD for 12 h during the first D period resulted in a significant difference with respect to the parameter 'hourly amount of antennal immobility' between sleep-deprived and control animals during the remaining L and D periods. Temporal dynamics of human masticatory sequences.

Many motor behaviors produced by humans and other mammals are temporally segmented. That is, sequences of rhythmic or repetitive behavior occur as a series of brief, 2- to 4-s bouts separated from each other by pauses or posture adjustments. Little is known about the physiological mechanisms underlying temporal segmentation, although several hypotheses have been advanced. Experimental and modeling studies are currently underway to gain insight into this phenomenon. One of the problems hampering advancement is the lack of relatively simple behavior models that can be studied in both humans and

Video-assisted repair of a ruptured right hemidiaphragm.

Video-assisted thoracic surgery is emerging as a viable approach to increasingly complex intrathoracic therapeutic procedures. We present a case of delayed diagnosis of a ruptured right diaphragm caused by a closed trauma in a young woman. The diaphragm was repaired successfully using a video-assisted procedure. Limited postoperative chest pain and muscular impairment allowed early physical therapy that resulted in an excellent outcome. Video-assisted thoracic surgery is suggested as a new treatment option for traumatic diaphragmatic disorders.

Laryngeal configuration of 99 dysphonic patients.

The aim of this investigation was to study a wide range of dysphonic patients and determine the best matches among the laryngeal configurations on phonation for each patient and those previously established for control data, which were obtained from a professional voice user producing the whole range of voice qualities. Ninety-nine patients were selected and laryngeal photographs were produced for each patient. Fifteen laryngeal parameters were quantified and normalized. The data were sorted, scalar values assigned and a measure of similarity between configurations applied. The best, second-be

Introducing video recording in primary care midwifery for research purposes: procedure, dataset, and use.

BACKGROUND: video recording studies have been found to be complex; however very few studies describe the actual introduction and enrolment of the study, the resulting dataset and its interpretation. In this paper we describe the introduction and the use of video recordings of health care provider (HCP)-client interactions in primary care midwifery for research purposes. We also report on the process of data management, data coding and the resulting data set. METHODS: we describe our experience in undertaking a study using video recording to assess the interaction of the midwife and her client

Nursing students' self-evaluation using a video recording of foley catheterization: effects on students' competence, communication skills, and learning motivation.

An opportunity for a student to evaluate his or her own performance enhances self-awareness and promotes self-directed learning. Using three outcome measures of competency of procedure, communication skills, and learning motivation, the effects of self-evaluation using a video recording of the student's Foley catheterization was investigated in this study. The students in the experimental group (n = 20) evaluated their Foley catheterization performance by reviewing the video recordings of their own performance, whereas students in the control group (n = 20) received written evaluation guidelin

Home alone: methods to maximize tic expression for objective videotape assessments in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Our objective was to test whether at-home videotapes yield enhanced information on tics compared to office-based videotapes and a patient questionnaire on the current anatomical distribution of tics. Ten subjects with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (age range 8-49 years) who were seen for initial evaluation completed a check list of anatomical areas currently affected with tics, and underwent a videotape examination according to the Rush Videotape Protocol. Each patient/family conducted the same protocol at home at the same time of day within 48 hours. We rated two tapes in random order using
