Copper nanoparticle (CuNP) nanochain arrays with a reduced toxicity response: a biophysical and biochemical outlook on Vigna radiata.

Copper deficiency or toxicity in agricultural soil circumscribes a plant's growth and physiology, hampering photochemical and biochemical networks within the system. So far, copper sulfate (CS) has been used widely despite its toxic effect. To get around this long-standing problem, copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) have been synthesized, characterized, and tested on mung bean plants along with commercially available salt CS, to observe morphological abnormalities enforced if any. CuNPs enhanced photosynthetic activity by modulating fluorescence emission, photophosphorylation, electron transport cha

Stress-resilient endophytic bacteria from mung bean (Vigna radiata L.) with biocontrol and plant growth-promoting potential.

Plant growth-promoting endophytes with combined abiotic stress tolerance and biocontrol capacity are critical for sustainable agriculture. However, the functional diversity of mung bean (Vigna radiata L.)-associated bacterial communities and potential trade-offs between stress adaptation and antagonistic activity remain poorly understood. This study characterized endophytic bacteria from seeds and roots of mung bean cultivated in Ethiopia, to identify stress-resilient strains with biocontrol and plant growth-promoting potential. Twenty-eight endophytic bacteria were isolated from seeds (n = 16

Dynamic changes in seed nutritional components of mung bean [(Vigna radiata (L.) R. Wilczek)] under heat stress.

The increasing challenges of high-temperature (heat stress) significantly impact plant growth and crop yield, including mung bean [(Vigna radiata (L.) R. Wilczek]. Simultaneously, seed quality, encompassing various seed nutrition components, is adversely affected by heat stress. To examine the impact of heat stress, we investigated the seed nutritional profiling of ten selected diverse mung bean genotypes for seed compounds (all expressed in concentration), protein, carbon (C), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and micronutrients, with main focused on seed iron (Fe),

Identification of novel genomic regions associated with yield-related traits in cowpea (Vigna unguiculata [L.] Walp) landraces.

BACKGROUND: Hypersplenism is commonly seen in patients with non-cirrhotic portal hypertension (NCPH). While a splenectomy alone can effectively relieve the hypersplenism, it does not address the underlying portal hypertension. The present study was undertaken to analyze the impact of shunt and non-shunt operations on the resolution of hypersplenism in patients with NCPH. The relationship of symptomatic hypersplenism, severe hypersplenism and number of peripheral cell line defects to the severity of portal hypertension and outcome was also assessed. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of NCPH pa

Screening of Comprehensive Panel of Cultivated and Wild Vigna Species for Resistance to Pulse Beetle, Callosobruchus chinensis L.

Pulses are a key source of dietary proteins in human nutrition. Despite several efforts to increase the production, various constraints, such as biotic and abiotic factors, threaten pulse production by various means. Bruchids (Callosobruchus spp.) are the serious issue of concern, particularly in storage conditions. Understanding host-plant resistance at morphological, biochemical and molecular levels is the best way to minimize yield losses. The 117 mungbean (Vigna radiata L. Wilczek) genotypes, including endemic wild relatives, were screened for resistance against Callosobruchus chinensis; a

Biofortification of mungbean (Vigna radiata L. (Wilczek)) with boron, zinc and iron alters its grain yield and nutrition.

Mungbean [Vigna radiata L. (Wilczek)] is considered as an extremely nutritious crop possessing a high level of micronutrients, but their low bioavailability in the crop leads to micronutrient malnutrition in humans. Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate the potential of nutrients viz. boron (B), zinc (Zn) and iron (Fe) biofortification on productivity, nutrient concentration and uptake as well as the economics of mungbean cultivation. In the experiment, the various combinations of RDF with ZnSO4.7H2O (0.5%), FeSO4.7H2O (0.5%) and borax (0.1%) were applied to mungbean variet

Mechanism of Resistance in Mungbean [Vigna radiata (L.) R. Wilczek var. radiata] to bruchids, Callosobruchus spp. (Coleoptera: Bruchidae).

Mungbean [Vigna radiata (L.) R. Wilczek var. radiata] is an important pulse crop in Asia, and is consumed as dry seeds and as bean sprouts. It is an excellent source of digestible protein. Bruchids [Callosobruchus chinensis (L.) and Callosobruchus maculatus (F.)] are the important pests of mungbean and cause damage in the field and in storage. Bruchid infestation reduces the nutritional and market value of the grain and renders seeds unfit for human consumption, agricultural and commercial uses. These pests are controlled mainly by fumigation with highly toxic chemicals such as carbon disulfid

Development of KASP molecular markers and construction of fingerprinting for cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.) based on ddRAD-Seq.

Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.) is a globally important legume crop. However, the scarcity of efficient molecular markers has hindered molecular breeding efforts and the protection of plant breeders' rights. In this study, we employed double-digest restriction-site associated DNA sequencing (ddRAD-seq) to characterize the genetic diversity of 19 cowpea accessions. A total of 791,621 SNPs were identified, of which 13,469 high-quality SNPs were retained after filtering. Population structure and phylogenetic analyses revealed that these accessions clustered into three distinct groups. To fa

Effects of dietary substitution with raw and heat-treated cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) on intestinal transport and pancreatic enzymes in the pig.

Tropical grain legumes represent potentially important feed for farm animals. However, diarrhoea and poor growth performance have been reported, due to the various anti-nutritional factors they contain. This study addressed in particular whether dietary cowpea impaired the growth of pigs, whether the small intestinal Na+/D-glucose coabsorptive transport capacity was decreased, whether the Cl- secretory capacity was increased, and, finally, whether these parameters were affected by heat treatment of cowpea. Pigs, 4 weeks old, were fed for 3 weeks with one of three diets: (i) standard soy, (ii)

Genetic Diversity of Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.) Accession in Kenya Gene Bank Based on Simple Sequence Repeat Markers.

Increased agricultural production is an urgent issue. Projected global population is 9 million people by mid of this century. Estimation projects death of 1 million people for lack of food quality (micronutrient deficit) and quantity (protein deficit). Majority of these people will be living in developing countries. Other global challenges include shrinking cultivable lands, salinity, and flooding due to climate changes, new emerging pathogens, and pests. These affect crop production. Furthermore, they are major threats to crop genetic resources and food security. Genetic diversity in cultivat
