Historical biogeography of the Western Rattlesnake (Serpentes: viperidae: Crotalus viridis), inferred from mitochondrial DNA sequence information.

We infer the phylogeography of the Western Rattlesnake (Crotalus viridis) using phylogenetic analysis of mitochondrial DNA sequences from 1345 bp of the genes for cytochrome b and NADH dehydrogenase subunit 4. Two main clades are revealed: one includes populations from east and south of the Rocky Mountains (conventionally referred to as Crotalus viridis viridis and C. v. nuntius), and the other consists of populations west of the Rocky Mountains. Within the western clade, a population from southern Arizona (C. v. cerberus) represents the sister taxon to the remaining western populations. The c

A Genus-Wide Bioactivity Analysis of Daboia (Viperinae: Viperidae) Viper Venoms Reveals Widespread Variation in Haemotoxic Properties.

The snake genus Daboia (Viperidae: Viperinae; Oppel, 1811) contains five species: D. deserti, D. mauritanica, and D. palaestinae, found in Afro-Arabia, and the Russell's vipers D. russelii and D. siamensis, found in Asia. Russell's vipers are responsible for a major proportion of the medically important snakebites that occur in the regions they inhabit, and their venoms are notorious for their coagulopathic effects. While widely documented, the extent of venom variation within the Russell's vipers is poorly characterised, as is the venom activity of other species within the genus. In this stud

Phospholipases a2 from Viperidae snakes: Differences in membranotropic activity between enzymatically active toxin and its inactive isoforms.

We describe the interaction of various phospholipases A2 (PLA2) from snake venoms of the family Viperidae (Macrovipera lebetina obtusa, Vipera ursinii renardi, Bothrops asper) with giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs) composed of natural brain phospholipids mixture, visualized through fluorescence microscopy. The membrane fluorescent probes 8-anilino-1-naphthalenesulfonicacid (ANS), LAUDRAN and PRODAN were used to assess the state of the membrane and specifically mark the lipid packing and membrane fluidity. Our results have shown that the three PLA2s which contain either of aspartic acid, serine

Reproductive seasonality drives structural and functional shifts in spermatozoa of the Neotropical rattlesnake Crotalus durissus (Squamata: Viperidae).

In brief: Reproductive seasonality in snakes reflects evolutionarily conserved adaptive mechanisms that sustain sperm function despite seasonal environmental fluctuations. This study demonstrates structural and ultrastructural modifications in Crotalus durissus spermatozoa, providing novel insights into the mechanisms of sperm maintenance and their potential applications in reptile reproductive biotechnology. AbstractReproductive seasonality in snakes can result in dissociation between spermatogenesis and mating, making long-term sperm storage essential. Despite seasonal testicular regression

Anatomical exploration of Vipera ammodytes (family Viperidae) horn supports cephalic appendage sensory function in non-aquatic snakes.

Several snakes possess cephalic appendages over their eyes and snouts, but their exact function remains largely unknown. In one aquatic species, such structures have been associated with a mechanosensory role, and this suggests that other horned snakes may have evolved analogous appendages. To be considered sensory structures, cephalic appendages should be highly innervated by specific cranial nerves like the trigeminal, and perhaps carry specialised integumentary sense organs. The identification of trigeminal branches reaching the cephalic appendages would be consistent with sensory capabilit

Snakebite Envenomation From the Large Palearctic Viper, Macrovipera razii (Squamata: Serpentes; Viperidae), in Fars Province, Southern Iran.

Snakebites are a significant health issue, especially in tropical and subtropical regions. Envenomation from snakebites is a clinical emergency requiring prompt treatment. Recently, a new species of blunt-nosed viper, Macrovipera razii, was identified in central and southern Iran through morphological and molecular studies. This large, dangerous viper can deliver substantial amounts of venom. Following reports to the Faculty of Health at Shiraz University of Medical Science (SUMS), the identification of venomous snakes involved in envenomation cases in Fars province was undertaken. Approximate

Elucidation of trends within venom components from the snake families Elapidae and Viperidae using gel filtration chromatography.

Research into snake venom components has intensified over the last number of decades, particularly that work directed towards the discovery of novel agents with potential applications in clinical therapy. In the present study we report, for the first time, defined patterns observed in the G-50 chromatographic elution profiles from 30 snake venoms taken from Elapidae and Viperidae families, as well as previously unreported patterns within subfamilies of these snake species. Development of this chromatographic technique thus offers a rapid method for the general classification of snakes within t

Edema induced by Bothrops asper (Squamata: Viperidae) snake venom and its inhibition by Costa Rican plant extracts.

We tested the capacity of leaf (Urera baccifera, Loasa speciosa, Urtica leptuphylla, Chaptalia nutans, and Satureja viminea) and root (Uncaria tomentosa) extracts to inhibit edema induced by Bothrops asper snake venom. Edema-forming activity was studied plethysmographically in the rat hind paw model. Groups of rats were injected intraperitoneally with various doses of each extract and, one hour later, venom was injected subcutaneously in the right hind paw. Edema was assessed at various time intervals. The edematogenic activity was inhibited in those animals that received an injection U. tomen

A new species of Kalicephalus (Nematoda: Diaphanocephalidae), a parasite of Bothrops atrox (Serpentes: Viperidae) from the Brazilian Amazon.

Kalicephalus (Molin, 1861) comprises 33 species of gastrointestinal snake and lizard parasites with a cosmopolitan distribution, with seven taxa occurring in the Neotropical realm. In the present study, we describe Kalicephalus atroxi n. sp., found parasitising the snake Bothrops atrox, from the Eastern Amazon in the State of Amapá, North of Brazil. We used an integrative approach that included light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) region to describe Kalicephalus atroxi n. sp. The new species has a buccal capsule characterist

Venom composition, toxicity and cross-neutralization by PoliVal-ICP antivenom, of Mesoamerican jumping pitvipers genus Metlapilcoatlus (Viperidae: Crotalinae).

BACKGROUND: The genus Metlapilcoatlus was recently erected to include six species of stout venomous snakes, known as the jumping pitvipers, which inhabit mountainous areas of Mesoamerica. This group maintains affinity with Atropoides picadoi, another jumping pitviper with restricted distribution in Costa Rica and Panama. Although the venom of A. picadoi and a couple of Metlapilcoatlus species has previously been characterized, little is known about the interspecific and intraspecific variation of the other species that comprise the genus. In this work, we characterize the venoms of five out of

Snake venomics, experimental toxic activities and clinical characteristics of human envenomation by Bothrocophias myersi (Serpentes: Viperidae) from Colombia.

Venoms of the viperid genus Bothrocophias, restricted to Colombia and Ecuador, are poorly known. Only a proteomic analysis of B. campbelli venom has been described. In this work we present a proteomic study of B. myersi venom, its biological activities, and describe the clinical characteristics of a patient bitten by this species. B. myersi venom mainly consists of phospholipases A2 (54.0%) and metalloproteinases (21.5%), among proteins of twelve different families. This venom exhibited proteolytic, phospholipase A2, myotoxic, edema-forming, and lethal activities. Enzymatic activities did not

Much more than their fangs: Macroscopic anatomy of the brain of Bothrops moojeni Hoge 1966 (Squamata, Serpentes, Viperidae).

Neuroanatomical research has progressed considerably in several vertebrate lineages, yet studies of reptilian brain morphology remain markedly underdeveloped. Here we provide the first description of macroscopic brain anatomy and its ontogeny in the viperid Bothrops moojeni, based on a sample of seven individuals. Our results indicate that brain morphology undergoes significant size-related reshaping during growth: absolute measures revealed strong positive scaling of brain length, cerebral hemisphere length, cerebellum length, and medulla oblongata length with body and head size. However, whe

In vitro alexiteric activity of irregular monoterpenes derived from ortho-menthane against Bothrops diporus Cope (Serpentes: Viperidae) venom.

Many plant-derived compounds, mostly of mid-to-high molecular weight, exert alexiteric properties. However, some small phenolic molecules, such as 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzoic acid, are also known to be alexiteric by their ability to bind to snake venom proteins. This study presents the in vitro alexiteric activity of 2-isopropenyl-3-methylphenol [carquejiphenol, CARP; a minor compound of Baccharis trimera (Less.) Inside the head of Crotalus durissus LINNAEUS, 1758 (Serpentes, Viperidae, Crotalinae): Macroscopic description of the brain with ontogenetic insights.

Neuroanatomy studies in vertebrates have garnered significant attention in recent years, particularly driven by advancements in computerized tomography imaging techniques. Nonetheless, these advancements remain largely constrained to specific vertebrate groups, notably mammals, birds, and fish, leaving studies in reptiles at an incipient stage. In this work, we aim to describe in detail the macroscopic morphology of the brain of Crotalus durissus based on a sample of four young and four adult individuals-three male and five female specimens, providing the first detailed description of the brai

Proteomic characteristics of six snake venoms from the Viperidae and Elapidae families in China and their relation to local tissue necrosis.

Patients envenomed by snakes from the Viperidae and Elapidae families in China often have varying degrees of local tissue necrosis. Due to the relative clinical characteristics of local tissue necrosis and ulceration following envenoming, this study has analyzed the proteome of six snake venoms from the Viperidae and Elapidae family, and the toxin profiles of each snake were compared and correlated with the clinical manifestations that follow cytotoxic envenoming. Deinagkistrodon acutus and Naja atra envenomation induce severe ulceration, which is absent in Bungarus multicinctus envenomation a

The Protective Action of Coutarea hexandra (Rubiaceae) on the Neuromuscular Blockade Induced by Lachesis muta muta (Viperidae: Crotalinae) Venom.

Envenomations by snakes represent a neglected health problem in tropical and subtropical countries. In South America, Lachesis muta occasionally causes severe human envenomation, with treatment being conditioned to an unspecific antivenom. In this work, we examined the neutralizing ability of Coutarea hexandra stem bark hydroalcoholic extract (Ch-E), including the commercial phytochemicals coumarin and quinine, on the neuromuscular blockade induced by L. m. muta venom in mouse phrenic nerve-diaphragm preparation. Biological assays were performed following conventional myographic technique ex v

Differential Diagnosis Between Venomous (Bothrops jararaca, Serpentes, Viperidae) and "Nonvenomous" (Philodryas olfersii, Serpentes, Dipsadidae) Snakebites: Is It Always Possible?

Bites of "nonvenomous" snakes can sometimes be mistaken for the bites of venomous snakes. As an example of this confusion, this report describes confirmed bites by Philodryas olfersii and Bothrops jararaca. In the first case, a 55-y-old man with a history of controlled hypertension was bitten on his right forearm by P olfersii. Physical examination revealed extensive edema, erythema, and widespread ecchymoses throughout his right upper limb. Laboratory tests indicated leukocytosis and high D-dimer levels, but normal coagulation, suggestive of a resolved recent coagulopathy. He received only su

Sequence Divergence in Venom Genes Within and Between Montane Pitviper (Viperidae: Crotalinae: Cerrophidion) Species is Driven by Mutation-Drift Equilibrium.

Snake venom can vary both among and within species. While some groups of New World pitvipers-such as rattlesnakes-have been well studied, very little is known about the venom of montane pitvipers (Cerrophidion) found across the Mesoamerican highlands. Compared to most well-studied rattlesnakes, which are widely distributed, the isolated montane populations of Cerrophidion may facilitate unique evolutionary trajectories and venom differentiation. Here, we describe the venom gland transcriptomes for populations of C. petlalcalensis, C. tzotzilorum, and C. godmani from Mexico, and a single indivi

Does size matter? Venom proteomic and functional comparison between night adder species (Viperidae: Causus) with short and long venom glands.

Night adders (Causus species within the Viperidae family) are amphibian specialists and a common source of snakebite in Africa. Some species are unique in that they have the longest venom glands of any viper, extending approximately 10% of the body length. Despite their potential medical importance and evolutionary novelty, their venom has received almost no research attention. In this study, venoms from a short-glanded species (C. lichtensteinii) and from a long-glanded species (C. rhombeatus) were compared using a series of proteomic and bioactivity testing techniques to investigate and comp
