They look virtually the same: Extraretinal representation of symmetry in virtual reality.

The brain must identify objects from different viewpoints that change the retinal image. This study examined the conditions under which the brain spends computational resources to construct view-invariant, extraretinal representations in a 3D virtual environment. We focused on extraretinal representation of visual symmetry. Visual symmetry activates the extrastriate visual cortex and generates an Event Related Potential (ERP) called Sustained Posterior Negativity (SPN). Amplitude is lower for symmetrical compared to asymmetrical stimuli at posterior electrodes. Given a symmetric pattern on a p

Pain and alcohol consumption in virtual reality.

Research suggests situational pain may motivate alcohol consumption, suggesting that pain may be an antecedent for problematic drinking behavior. In this pilot project, we assessed the effect of a painful thermal stimulus on drinking topography in a virtual reality bar environment using real alcohol-containing beverages. We also examined psychosocial factors that may account for individual differences in pain as an antecedent for alcohol use. Participants (N = 20, Mage = 25.65 years, 55% female, 15% Hispanic/Latino/a/x) completed a psychosocial screening battery before completing two counterba

[Use of virtual reality in eating disorders].

Virtual reality is a new technology that can be used to model an environment with which an individual can interact using all five senses. It is notably used in psychiatry for anxiety disorders and addictions, and its use in eating disorders has been growing in recent years. Indeed, virtual reality offers interesting advantages, such as its ability to personalize any environment, which is also more secure and controllable. Recent studies show promising results in the understanding, evaluation, and therapeutic management of eating disorders. The use of avatars in anorexia nervosa allows for a co

Virtual reality in the treatment of eating disorders.

Over the last 25 years, virtual reality (VR) has offered innovative solutions for targeting different key symptoms of eating disorders: from craving to negative emotions, from attentional biases to body dissatisfaction. The present narrative review assesses the existing literature in these areas trying to identify their different levels of clinical evidence. Specifically, the review presents four clinical approaches based upon VR and their implications in the treatment of eating disorders: VR cue exposure, VR reference frame shifting, VR for correcting body distortions and attentional biases.

Virtual Reality Is Sexist: But It Does Not Have to Be.

The aim of this study was to assess what drives gender-based differences in the experience of cybersickness within virtual environments. In general, those who have studied cybersickness (i.e., motion sickness associated with virtual reality [VR] exposure), oftentimes report that females are more susceptible than males. As there are many individual factors that could contribute to gender differences, understanding the biggest drivers could help point to solutions. Two experiments were conducted in which males and females were exposed for 20 min to a virtual rollercoaster. In the first experimen

Is clinical virtual reality ready for primetime?

OBJECTIVE: Since the mid-1990s, a significant scientific literature has evolved regarding the outcomes from the use of what we now refer to as clinical virtual reality (VR). This use of VR simulation technology has produced encouraging results when applied to address cognitive, psychological, motor, and functional impairments across a wide range of clinical health conditions. This article addresses the question, "Is clinical VR ready for primetime?" METHOD: After a brief description of the various forms of VR technology, we discuss the trajectory of clinical VR over the last 20 years and summ

A virtual reality atlas of craniofacial anatomy.

BACKGROUND: Head and neck anatomy is complex and represents an educational challenge to the student. Conventional two-dimensional illustrations inherently fall short in conveying intricate anatomical relationships that exist in three dimensions. A gratis three-dimensional virtual reality atlas of craniofacial anatomy is presented in an effort to address the paucity of readily accessible and customizable three-dimensional educational material available to the student of head and neck anatomy. METHODS: Three-dimensional model construction was performed in Alias Maya 4.5 and 6.0. A basic three-d

Psychedelics and virtual reality: parallels and applications.

Psychedelic drugs and virtual reality (VR) each have the capacity to disrupt the rigidity and limitations of typical conscious experience. This article delineates the parallels among psychedelic and VR states as well as their potential synergistic applications in clinical and recreational settings. Findings indicate that, individually, psychedelics and VR are used in analogous ways to alter sensory experience and evoke awe. They are also both used in tandem with traditional therapies to treat a variety of mood disorders; their shared capacity to transiently alter perspective and disrupt rigid

Virtual reality as a mechanism for exposure therapy.

Virtual reality (VR) is as effective in inducing emotional responses as reality and its application is extremely valuable in exposure treatment. In virtual environments, the patients experience similar physiological symptoms and fear as they do in real life situations, thereby facilitating the habituation process. Our goal is to offer an overview of the current panorama of VR and psychotherapy, underlining the (virtual) exposure technique and the studies that focus on panic disorder treatment through the use of VR. The literature was revised through consultation to the ISI and PubMed databases
