BACKGROUND: Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy (VRET) is found to be a promising and a viable alternative for in vivo exposure in the treatment of specific phobias. However, its usefulness for treating dental phobia is unexplored. The aims of the present study are to determine: (a) the efficacy of VRET versus informational pamphlet (IP) control group in terms of dental trait and state anxiety reductions at 1 week, 3 months and 6 months follow-up (b) the real-time physiological arousal [heart rate (HR)] of VRET group participants during and following therapy (c) the relation between subjective (p

In recent years, virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) has become an interesting alternative for the treatment of anxiety disorders. Research has focused on the efficacy of VRET in treating anxiety disorders: phobias, panic disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder. In this systematic review, strict methodological criteria are used to give an overview of the controlled trials regarding the efficacy of VRET in patients with anxiety disorders. Furthermore, research into process variables such as the therapeutic alliance and cognitions and enhancement of therapy effects through cognitive enha

Virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) is an increasingly common treatment for anxiety and specific phobias. Lacking is a quantitative meta-analysis that enhances understanding of the variability and clinical significance of anxiety reduction outcomes after VRET. Searches of electronic databases yielded 52 studies, and of these, 21 studies (300 subjects) met inclusion criteria. Although meta-analysis revealed large declines in anxiety symptoms following VRET, moderator analyses were limited due to inconsistent reporting in the VRET literature. This highlights the need for future research stud

Alcohol dependence (AD) is characterized by a high relapse rate. Virtual reality (VR) technology can provide immersive cue exposure therapy (VR-CET) and aversion therapy (VR-AT). This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of VR-CET, VR-AT and their combination on craving, emotional and sleep states, attentional bias and relapse rate in patients with AD. In this single-centre randomized controlled trial, male inpatients with AD were randomly assigned to one of four groups: control, VR-CET, VR-AT or combined VR-CET + AT (target n = 25 per group; 80 completed, 20 per group). The interventions span

INTRODUCTION: Nearly one-quarter of adult critical illness survivors develop posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms triggered by sensory stimuli after intensive care unit discharge. Intensive care unit delirium is a risk factor for posttraumatic stress disorder. Compressed virtual reality exposure therapy (C-VRET) incorporates sensory stimuli to reduce posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms through habituation.
CLINICAL FINDINGS AND DIAGNOSIS: A critical illness survivor developed intensive care unit delirium and enrolled in a C-VRET trial to treat posttraumatic stress disorder. She reported

OBJECTIVES: Exposure therapy is a cornerstone of social anxiety treatment, yet not all patients respond. Symptoms in certain social situations, including intergroup (ie, out-group) contexts, may be particularly resistant to treatment. Exposure therapy outcomes may be improved by stimulating neural areas associated with safety learning, such as the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). The mPFC also plays an important role in identifying others as similar to oneself. We hypothesized that targeting the mPFC during exposure therapy would reduce intergroup anxiety and social anxiety.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a specific subtype of anxiety disorder where individuals experience uncomfortable social situations that induce anxious feelings including nervousness and panic. Computer technology has been applied in interventions for many mental health disorders. We aim to understand and explore the use of virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) to treat adults with SAD. We conducted a literature search using relevant mesh keywords in PubMed and PsycINFO. Six studies met inclusion criteria in our final qualitative synthesis review. Results showed a significant reduction in S

OBJECTIVE: Exposure-based therapies such as mirror exposure may help to improve the results of classic cognitive behavioral therapy in anorexia nervosa (AN). Virtual reality (VR)-based procedures provide interesting novelties for targeting body-related concerns. This study aimed to provide preliminary evidence of the usefulness of a VR body exposure therapy in a patient diagnosed with AN.
METHOD: Fear of gaining weight (FGW), body anxiety, drive for thinness, body image disturbances, body mass index and body-related attentional bias were assessed before and after the intervention, as well as

Virtual Reality (VR) has emerged as a promising tool in the treatment of anxiety disorders, particularly for exposure-based interventions. This literature review summarizes recent research on the efficacy of Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy (VRET) for addressing public speaking anxiety (PSA) and Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). VRET demonstrates comparable efficacy to traditional in vivo exposure. While VRET exhibits relatively low drop-out rates, challenges related to immersion and sense of presence in the virtual environment remain to be addressed. Additionally, patients' preferences for VRET

The goal of this study was to determine if virtual reality graded exposure therapy (VRGET) was equally efficacious, more efficacious, or less efficacious, than imaginal exposure therapy in the treatment of fear of flying. Thirty participants (Age = 39.8 +/- 9.7) with confirmed DSM-IV diagnosis of specific phobia fear of flying were randomly assigned to one of three groups: VRGET with no physiological feedback (VRGETno), VRGET with physiological feedback (VRGETpm), or systematic desensitization with imaginal exposure therapy (IET). Eight sessions were conducted once a week. During each session,

[BACKGROUND]: Virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) has been recognized as an effective treatment for specific phobias and has the potential to overcome the limitations of traditional exposure therapy. The pursuit of non-invasive brain stimulation provides a practical means of augmenting VRET. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), a non-invasive neuromodulation technique, stimulates the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), with the potential to enhance the effects of exposure therapy. Therefore, we conducted a randomized controlled trial to examine whether tDCS enhanced the effects of

Trials of virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) for anxiety-related disorders have proliferated in number and diversity since our previous meta-analysis that examined 13 total trials, most of which were for specific phobias (Powers & Emmelkamp, 2008). Since then, new trials have compared VRET to more diverse anxiety and related disorders including social anxiety disorder (SAD), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and panic disorder (PD) with and without agoraphobia. With the availability of this data, it is imperative to re-examine the efficacy of VRET for anxiety. A literature search for

There is a clear need for more detailed analysis of the role of cognitive self-statements in virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET). To date, no research on this topic has been done. The primary aim of this study was to investigate whether coping self-statements would enhance the effectiveness of VRET. In a randomized crossover design, 26 patients with acrophobia (DSM-IV diagnosis of specific phobia) were randomly assigned to two sessions of VRET followed by two sessions of VRET plus coping self-statements, or the other way around: first two sessions of VRET plus coping self-statements follow

BACKGROUND: Traditional one-session exposure therapy (OST) in which a patient is gradually exposed to feared stimuli for up to 3 h in a one-session format has been found effective for the treatment of specific phobias. However, many individuals with specific phobia are reluctant to seek help, and access to care is lacking due to logistic challenges of accessing, collecting, storing, and/or maintaining stimuli. Virtual reality (VR) exposure therapy may improve upon existing techniques by facilitating access, decreasing cost, and increasing acceptability and effectiveness. The aim of this study

Exposure and response prevention therapy in virtual reality (VERP) for patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) has been investigated primarily for its effectiveness. This study evaluated an important research gap, the negative and positive side effects of VERP and its safety. Eighty outpatients with contamination- or checking-related OCD were randomized to two conditions: VERP (six weekly sessions) or care as usual (CAU). Assessments were conducted at baseline (t0), 6 weeks after t0 (t1), and 3 months after t1 (t2). General side effects (Negative and Positive Side Effects Questionnai

Third-wave therapies and Virtual Reality (VR) exposure are two promising interventions for Social Anxiety (SA) disorder. These interventions are not new, but what is innovative is the combination of them. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the preliminary efficacy of a treatment for SA that combines the best of third-wave therapies with the advantages of immersive VR exposure. Three experimental groups with SA disorder were recruited: SA only, SA with comorbidity, and SA with psychosis (n = 50; 64 % female; mean age 22.98). A control group was also recruited: SA with and without

BACKGROUND: Although Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy (VRET) has proven to be effective in the treatment of various subtypes of specific phobia, there is limited evidence of its role in the treatment of dental phobia.
METHOD: A single-blind RCT was conducted among 30 randomized patients with dental phobia to either VRET or informational pamphlet (IP) condition. Primary outcome anxiety measures (VAS-A, MDAS and DFS) were evaluated at baseline, pre- and post-intervention, 1-week, 3-months and 6-months follow-up. Secondary outcome measures assessed were pre-post behavioral avoidance, temporal va

BACKGROUND: Psychoanalytic theory and some empirical research suggest the working alliance follows a "rupture and repair" pattern over the course of therapy, but given its emphasis on collaboration, cognitive behavioral therapy may yield a different trajectory.
AIMS: The current study compares the trajectory of the working alliance during two types of cognitive behavioral therapy for social anxiety disorder - virtual reality exposure therapy (VRE) and exposure group therapy (EGT), one of which (VRE) has been proposed to show lower levels of working alliance due to the physical barriers posed

Flying phobia is a problem that affects a significant portion of the population. There are a number of therapeutic approaches but no one is universally accepted as the gold standard. One therapy is hypnosis. A recent addition to the armamentarium is virtual reality exposure (VRE) therapy. Both therapies are short-term and compare favorably to in vivo desensitization. Heretofore a combination of both approaches has not been reported. This article presents a case of a 50-year phobia to flying that was refractory to traditional methods including pharmacotherapy, systematic desensitization, and co
