BACKGROUND: Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring linear polymer with a large molecular size and a simple structure. It is classified as a glycosaminoglycan (GAG), which is a critical element of the extracellular matrix (ECM). Notably hydrophilic, HA has unique qualities such as viscoelasticity, biodegradability and biocompatibility. Its molecular weight (MW) has an influence on its activity, resulting in a wide spectrum of potential effects. Hyaluronic acid and its derivatives are biomaterials with great potential for usage in the medical, dental, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industri

The close association between osteoarthritis (OA) and obesity is well established. Mechanisms linking obesity and OA involve multifactorial phenomena such as systemic factors (i.e. adipokines and pro-inflammatory cytokines), hormonal disturbances (hyperinsulinemia) and muscule changes (i.e. sarcopenia and lower muscular tone). The concomitant increasing prevalence of the two diseases have major health, social and economic consequences. However, to date no specific recommendation for the medical management of obese patients with OA have been published. Current recommendations only specify that

PURPOSE: Amid the increasing clinical application of hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers in the ocular adnexa is a paucity of histological data concerning the fate of the injected material. The current study documents the in vivo biodegradation of HA deposited in the eyelid and orbit.
METHODS: The study included 22 chinchilla rabbits. The right upper eyelid of 12 rabbits received a single 0.2 ml Restylane (Galderma, Uppsala, Sweden) subcutaneous injection. In 10 different rabbits, the right orbit was injected with 1.0 ml Restylane SubQ (Galderma, Uppsala, Sweden) in the extraconal space. The rabbits

This review describes intra-articular drugs therapy of arthritis and degenerative joint disease) with a range of old and recent molecules with specific focus on hyaluronic acid. HA is a cartilage matrix basic component secreted by chondrocytes: it prevents cartilage degradation by a complex interpherence between metalloproteinases, pain mediators and cells. Local injections of HA improve functional activity and pain management, particularly when it is combined with other selected drugs.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a linear polysaccharide which occurs naturally as a constituent of synovial fluid. The HA concentration in the joint decreases inexorably during the progression of knee osteoarthritis (OA) and so, for nearly five decades, HA has been trialled and used in the treatment of knee OA. There are strong data from clinical trials, meta-analyses and umbrella reviews to support the use of intra-articular hyaluronic acid (IAHA) in the treatment of patients with knee OA, though not in patients with acute, active OA experiencing a flare. The majority of the literature suggests that

BACKGROUND: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) imposes a substantial global socioeconomic burden. Intra-articular hyaluronic acid (IAHA) injections are widely used as part of conservative management strategies for KOA; however, their clinical application and underlying mechanisms remain topics of ongoing research and debate.
METHODS: A bibliometric analysis of publications related to IAHA for KOA from 2015 to 2025 was conducted using the Web of Science Core Collection, with data retrieved on November 15, 2025. CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and the bibliometrix R package were used to analyze publication trends

BACKGROUND: Although a safe, excellent administration method for hyaluronic acid derivatives has been documented; improper injections can lead to devastating and irreversible consequences. Here, we present the first known case of optic perineuritis caused by hyaluronic acid.
CASE PRESENTATION: A young female experienced sudden orbital pain in the right eye after receiving hyaluronic acid injections to the eyebrows. She presented to the eye clinic two weeks later, after developing blurred vision in the right eye. Visual acuity was reduced significantly in the right eye. Automated visual field

The aim of the paper is to report the case of a boy affected by cystic fibrosis, with non-ABPA-related recurrent wheezing and frequent pulmonary exacerbation during childhood, who had been inhaling 7% NaCl+0.1% hyaluronic acid (HA) as a maintenance therapy. We reviewed patient database and, analysing a 7-year follow-up, considered pulmonary exacerbation, antibiotic and steroid courses, pulmonary function (forced expiratory volume in one second; FEV1) and microbiological data. After starting 7% NaCl+0.1% HA treatment, we observed a dramatic decrease of oral antibiotic need (0.55 courses/month

UNLABELLED: We describe a technique to rescue the continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis (CCC) in cases in which complete radial tears make it impossible to use normal traction forceps. A circumferential path and rapid movement are applied in the plane of the anterior capsule in the direction of the center pupil. This technique was used in 50 cases. In 47, the CCC could be completed; in 3, it could not and surgery was continued with low-parameter phacoemulsification. No other intraoperative complications occurred.

Hylan G-F 20 (Synvisc-One) is a hyaluronic acid derivative used for viscosupplementation of synovial fluid in osteoarthritic joints. Injection of hylan G-F 20 is Federal Drug Administration approved for use in knee osteoarthritis and is generally well tolerated with few reported adverse effects, the most common being local pain or swelling. We present the case of a 72-year-old man with bilateral, diffuse, joint pain and swelling with elevated inflammatory markers suggestive of a systemic inflammatory polyarthropathy that developed acutely 2 days after lumbar zygapophyseal joint injection with

Osteoarthritis is one of the most frequent pathologies affecting the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). There is evidence that the use of intra-articular hyaluronic acid (HA) for the treatment of this disorder achieves positive effects through a reduction in inflammatory mediators. A systematic review of the available evidence regarding the regulation of inflammatory mediators when applying HA in osteoarthritis of the TMJ in humans was performed. The Web of Science, Embase, ScienceDirect, MEDLINE, Scopus, EBSCOhost, and LILACS databases, SciELO library, and search engine Trip Database were searche

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is technically demanding. A viscous gel for submucosal lifting might induce mechanical submucosal dissection facilitating easier and safer ESD.
METHODS: In 12 female pigs (median 64 kg), ESDs of simulated lesions were performed at the posterior wall and greater curvature in the gastric body (one ESD per location) with randomly assigned injection fluids: gel or control fluid (0.9% saline with hydroxypropyl methylcellulose 3 mg/ml [7:1] and indigo carmine droplets). Additionally, 10 cc gel was injected into the submucosa at the a

Osteoarthritis (OA) significantly impairs mobility and quality of life, with its prevalence rising due to ageing populations. Intra-articular hyaluronic acid (HA) injections, or viscosupplementation, restore synovial fluid viscosity, enhancing lubrication and joint function. Hymovis®/Hymovis ONE®, an advanced HA-based viscosupplement, incorporates hydrophobic modifications via MO.RE. technology, forming a reversible network that enhances viscoelasticity and lubrication. Hymovis exhibits self-healing properties, retaining elasticity and viscosity under mechanical stress, and demonstrates enhanc

CASE: A 79-year-old male barber with an acromioclavicular joint ganglion cyst and cuff tear arthropathy developed a large mass in his right shoulder. He refused surgery. Repeated punctures of the cyst and the injection of hyaluronic acid into the shoulder joint several times gradually reduced the cyst volume, and eventually, the cyst disappeared completely, with no recurrence for over 4 years. He has worked continuously as a barber since the initial consultation.
CONCLUSION: This treatment could be promising, but further research and more patients are necessary to determine if this is a relia
