BACKGROUND: A fatal aircraft accident of a Bo-105 helicopter on May 20, 1996 led to the suspicion that the pilot's raised serum bilirubin level could have contributed to the accident. It was suspected that an increase of bilirubin beyond 20.52 micromol x L(-1) could disturb visual perception.
METHODS: In 1998 and 1999, 101 pilots with functional hyperbilirubinemia, diagnosed as Gilbert's syndrome, were subjected to perceptual-psychological testing (signal detection test) during their periodic medical examinations at the German Air Force Institute of Aviation Medicine. The results of the psych

An attempt is made to explain how the eyes can be moved with respect to the head and the observer can still assess the direction of an object in space fixed with respect to the head. My explanation is based on the assumption that the subject is made aware of the direction in which the eyes are pointing by the output from the brain center controlling the direction of fixation. He associates this signal with an awareness of "looking in a certain direction." The image falling on a certain point of the retina (usually near the center of the fovea), which I call the anchor point, is perceived as ly

Opinions differ concerning the relation between dyslexia and visual perception. In this pilot study we addressed this question by analyzing the results of visual perceptual testing on 19 elementary grade subjects diagnosed as having dyseidesia, one type of dyslexia that manifests as problems with sight-word recognition. The subjects, who have different degrees of severity of dyseidesia, were compared with 11 subjects tested as nondyslexic, but with reading problems. The Dyslexia Determination Test (DDT) and the Test of Visual Perceptual Skills (TVPS) were given to all subjects. Both multivaria

The human brain constructs a model of the world by processing sensory signals with distinct temporal characteristics that may differ in generation and transmission speed within a single sensory modality. To perceive simultaneous events as occurring at the same time, the brain must synchronize this sensory information, yet the mechanisms underlying such synchronization remain unclear. By combining human neural recordings, behavioral measurements and modeling, we show that in the human visual system, this process begins in the fovea centralis, the retinal region used for reading and recognizing

Vertical representation is central to posture control, as well as to spatial perception and navigation. This representation has been studied for a long time in patients with vestibular disorders and more recently in patients with hemispheric damage, in particular in those with right lesions causing spatial or postural deficits. The aim of the study was to determine the brain areas involved in the visual perception of the vertical. Sixteen right-handed healthy participants were evaluated using fMRI while they were judging the verticality of lines or, in a control task, the color of the same lin

The study aims to test whether impaired conduction velocities following optic neuritis (ON) serve as a limiting factor on various temporal, as compared to static, aspects of vision. Critical Flicker fusion frequency (CFFF), two motion perception tasks (object and number-from-motion extraction tasks), high and low contrast acuities, and visual evoked potentials (VEPs) were assessed in 23 ON patients. Strong correlations were found between the various dynamic visual function scores. Furthermore, regression models revealed that each of the dynamic visual functions significantly predicted VEP late

BACKGROUND: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a popular functional mapping tool in cognitive and sensory neuroscience. While strong TMS typically degrades performance, two recent studies have demonstrated that weak TMS, delivered to visual cortex, can improve performance on simple visual tasks. The improvement was interpreted as the summation of visually-evoked and TMS-elicited neuronal activity in visual cortex, but the nature of this interaction remains unclear.
OBJECTIVE: The present experiments sought to determine whether these weak pulses of TMS assist subjects to see the visual

OBJECTIVE: Visual perceptual abilities are increasingly being neglected in research concerning reading disabilities. This study measures the visual perceptual abilities of children with disabilities in reading.
METHOD: The visual perceptual abilities of 35 children with specific reading disorder and 30 controls were compared using the German version of the Developmental Test of Visual Perception – Adolescent and Adult (DTVP-A).
RESULTS: 11 % of the children with specific reading disorder show clinically relevant performance on the DTVP-A. The perceptual abilities of both groups differ signif

The current debate on mechanisms of action understanding and recognition has re-opened the question of how perceptual and motor systems are linked. It has been proposed that the human motor system has a role in action perception; however, there is still no direct evidence that actions can modulate early neural processes associated with perception of meaningful actions. Here we show that plans for action modulate the perceptual processing of observed actions within 200 ms of stimulus onset. We examined event-related potentials to images of hand gestures presented while participants planned eith

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) over the occipital pole can produce an illusory percept of a light flash (or 'phosphene'), suggesting an excitatory effect. Whereas previous reported effects produced by single-pulse occipital pole TMS are typically disruptive, here we report the first demonstration of a location-specific facilitatory effect on visual perception in humans. Observers performed a spatial cueing orientation discrimination task. An orientation target was presented in one of two peripheral placeholders. A single pulse below the phosphene threshold applied to the occipital pol

Like most other spiders Cupiennius salei (Keyserling 1877) has two different eye types, one pair of principal eyes and three pairs of secondary eyes. The principal eyes have two eye muscles each, which allow movement of the retina and are mainly used for the discrimination of stationary objects. The secondary eyes without such eye muscles are supposed to detect moving objects. Masking experiments were used to analyse the role of these two eye types in motion detection. In a white arena the animals were stimulated with short sequences of moving black bars. The principal eyes move involuntarily

Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) can impair interictal cognitive function. In the perceptual domain, previous psychophysical studies demonstrated specific deficits in auditory and tactile perception in patients with TLE. This study compared performance of 25 TLE subjects and 27 controls on two low-level, visual tasks: luminance discrimination and frequency discrimination. Both tasks were performed under a relatively easy and a relatively difficult condition, by adjusting the stimulus duration. TLE subjects performed as well as controls on both tasks at both stimulus durations. These results imply

Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) allows to investigate the causal relationship between the activity of a target brain region and the performance in a specific task. Regarding visual perception and NIBS of the visual cortex, previous attempts reported mixed results, possibly because different studies addressed similar questions but with different NIBS protocols have been used to address similar questions, and the influence of visuomotor activity on visual perception has not been considered. It is therefore still unclear whether the combination of visuomotor activity with which specific NIB

OBJECTIVE: Blindsight is a disorder where brain injury causes loss of conscious but not unconscious visual perception. Prior studies have produced conflicting results regarding the neuroanatomical pathways involved in this unconscious perception.
METHODS: We performed a systematic literature search to identify lesion locations causing visual field loss in patients with blindsight (n = 34) and patients without blindsight (n = 35). Resting state functional connectivity between each lesion location and all other brain voxels was computed using a large connectome database (n = 1,000). Connections

Humans have an astonishing ability to extract hidden information from the movements of others. For example, even with limited kinematic information, humans can distinguish between biological and nonbiological motion, identify the age and gender of a human demonstrator, and recognize what action a human demonstrator is performing. It is unknown, however, whether they can also estimate hidden mechanical properties of another's limbs simply by observing their motions. Strictly speaking, identifying an object's mechanical properties, such as stiffness, requires contact. With only motion informatio

Individuals with developmental dyslexia (DD) may experience, besides reading problems, other speech-related processing deficits. Here, we examined the influence of visual articulatory information (lip-read speech) at various levels of background noise on auditory word recognition in children and adults with DD. We found that children with a documented history of DD have deficits in their ability to gain benefit from lip-read information that disambiguates noise-masked speech. We show with another group of adult individuals with DD that these deficits persist into adulthood. These deficits coul
