Oxalate metabolism was assessed in normal rats and rats deficient in vitamins B-1 and B-6 during intravenous infusions of solutions containing glucose, fructose, sorbitol or xylitol. OBJECTIVE: To describe the biochemical effects of an over-supplementation of vitamin D3 in two patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT).
DESIGN: Two patients (A and B) with PHPT took erroneously 2,400,000 U (300,000 U/day for 8 days) and 4,500,000 U (300,000 U/day for 15 days) of cholecalciferol, respectively. They were followed for 4 months and ionized calcium, creatinine, PTH, 25 hydroxy-vitamin D, 1,25(OH)₂D and urinary calcium/creatinine levels were measured. BACKGROUND: High dietary phosphorus (P) worsens uremia-induced parathyroid (PT) hyperplasia through increases in the growth promoter transforming growth factor-alpha (TGF-alpha). In contrast, P restriction prevents PT hyperplasia by inducing the cell cycle inhibitor p21. Since 1,25(OH)2D3-antiproliferative action in various cell types involve increases in p21, we studied whether induction of p21 by 1,25(OH)2D3 or the vitamin D analog, 19-Nor-1,25(OH)2D2, could counteract the PT hyperplasia induced by high dietary P in early uremia.

One milliliter of 1, 2, or 5% DL-cysteine (cysteine) or DL-methionine methylsulfonium chloride (MMSC) was instilled into the rat stomach 1, 24, and 48 h after giving ethanol (1 mL of 40% solution) by gavage.
