BACKGROUND: Trypanosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease with complex clinical manifestations, tedious diagnosis, and difficult treatments. The drugs available for the treatment of this endemic disease are old, expensive, and associated with other problems including safety and drug resistant parasites. Therefore, there is an urgent need for the development of new, effective, cheap, and safe drugs for its treatment. Plants are potentially rich sources of leads for new drugs against trypanosomiasis. Vitex simplicifolia (Verbenaceae) is used traditionally for the treatment of tooth ache, edema

INTRODUCTION: Increased bleeding is the most common cause of intrauterine device (IUD) removal. The use of alternative therapies to treat bleeding has increased due to the complications of medications. But most alternative therapies are not accepted by women. Therefore, conducting studies to find the right treatment with fewer complications and being acceptable is necessary. This study aimed to compare the effect of mefenamic acid and vitex agnus castus on IUD induced bleeding.
METHODS: This was a double blinded randomized controlled clinical trial. It was conducted on 84 women with random al

This short review provides an update of the anticancer and anti-inflammatory properties of casticin from Vitex species. Casticin is a polymethylflavone with three rings, an orthocatechol moiety, a double bond, two hydroxyl groups and four methoxyl groups. Casticin has been isolated from various tissues of plants in the Vitex genus: fruits and leaves of V. trifolia, aerial parts and seeds of V. agnus-castus and leaves of V. negundo. Studies have reported the antiproliferative and apoptotic activities of casticin from Vitex species. The compound is effective against many cancer cell lines via di

Vitex negundo L. is a significant indigenous medicinal plant with diverse therapeutic potentials owing to its rich reservoir of bioactive compounds including sitosterol, vitexoside, agnuside, isovitexin and vitexin which are predominantly present in the root. To induce hairy roots, explants of V. negundo L. were transformed using two strains of Rhizobium rhizogenes: MTCC 532 and MTCC 2364. Among them, the MTCC 2364 strain exhibited the highest transformation efficiency (94.44%). Genetic transformation of the induced hairy roots was confirmed by PCR amplification using primers specific for the

The methanolic root extracts of Vitex negundo Linn. and Emblica officinalis Gaertn. were explored for the first time for antisnake venom activity. The plant (V. negundo and E. officinalis) extracts significantly antagonized the Vipera russellii and Naja kaouthia venom induced lethal activity both in in vitro and in vivo studies. V. russellii venom-induced haemorrhage, coagulant, defibrinogenating and inflammatory activity was significantly neutralized by both plant extracts. No precipitating bands were observed between the plant extract and snake venom. The above observations confirmed that th
