PURPOSE: The inner limiting membrane (ILM) and the vitreous body (VB) are major parts of the extracellular matrix of the eye. The present study was undertaken to investigate the synthesis and turnover of the ILM and VB in chick and human embryonic and postembryonic eye development.

A non-magnetic vitreal foreign body was aspirated from over the macula through the pars plana. The surgeon guided a blunt needle towards the foreign body while watching both with the binicular indirect ophthalmoscope. His assistant's tentative suction movements with an attached syringe drew the foreign body up into the needle without risking a retinal perforation. Visual recovery was complete. It is suggested that aspiration might be the procedure of choice for such small visible intraocular fragments.

The anterior axial vitreous body of aphakic eyes is often severely liquefied. In a vitrectomy case, it was removed easily and completely. The behavior of the prebasal vitreous cortex after the procedure was not predictable. The postoperative biomicroscopic examination resulted in two different findings, are reported on here.

Vitreous prolapse into the anterior chamber after cataract extraction is a severe complication in cases in which there is a contact between the vitreous and the cornea. The present paper discusses the result of treatment by vitrectomy in 15 patients with this complication. Anatomical and functional improvement was attained in 12 cases (89 p.c.) and in 5 among them--full visual acuity was obtained.

There are three forms of lens dislocation in the posterior segment: intravitreal, prebasal, and intrabasal. Amyloid transthyretin (ATTR) amyloidosis is characterized by the abnormal accumulation of ATTR fibrils in multiple organs. However, the structure of ATTR fibrils from the eye is poorly understood. PURPOSE: To investigate the role of vitreous body changes in the pathogenesis of aggressive posterior retinopathy of prematurity.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 60 children with stage 4-5 retinopathy of prematurity demonstrating either classical or aggressive posterior form of progression. In all cases vitreous samples for laboratory testing were taken during surgery.
