Vocabulary and reading skills in adults with Prader-Willi syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a rare genetic condition associated with global intellectual impairment. While research has evidenced speech problems, little is known about reading, which is a critical language ability involved in communication. The aim of the present study was to investigate vocabulary and reading skills in adults with PWS. METHOD: A total of 56 individuals (35 females, mean age = 33.64 years, range = 19-57 years) with PWS participated. Standardized paper and pencil tests were used to examine the level of vocabulary (LexTale-FR test) and reading performance (Alo

Early Hearing Detection and Vocabulary of Children With Hearing Loss.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To date, no studies have examined vocabulary outcomes of children meeting all 3 components of the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) guidelines (hearing screening by 1 month, diagnosis of hearing loss by 3 months, and intervention by 6 months of age). The primary purpose of the current study was to examine the impact of the current EHDI 1-3-6 policy on vocabulary outcomes across a wide geographic area. A secondary goal was to confirm the impact of other demographic variables previously reported to be related to language outcomes. METHODS: This was a cro

Pov9D: Point Cloud-Based Open-Vocabulary 9D Object Pose Estimation.

We propose a point cloud-based framework for open-vocabulary object pose estimation, called Pov9D. Existing approaches are predominantly RGB-based and often rely on texture or appearance cues, making them susceptible to pose ambiguities when objects are textureless or lack distinctive visual features. In contrast, Pov9D takes 3D point clouds as input, enabling direct access to geometric structures that are essential for accurate and robust pose estimation, especially in open-vocabulary settings. To bridge the gap between geometric observations and semantic understanding, Pov9D integrates categ

Verb Vocabulary Supports Event Probability Use in Developmental Language Disorder.

PURPOSE: Children with developmental language disorder (DLD) tend to interpret noncanonical sentences like passives using event probability (EP) information regardless of structure (e.g., by interpreting "The dog was chased by the squirrel" as "The dog chased the squirrel"). Verbs are a major source of EP information in adults and children with typical development (TD), who know that "chase" implies an unequal relationship among participants. Individuals with DLD have poor verb knowledge and verb-based sentence processing. Yet, they also appear to rely more on EP information than their peers.

Effects of transcranial electrical stimulation techniques on foreign vocabulary learning.

Although the use of transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) techniques on healthy population has been linked to facilitating language learning, studies on their effects on foreign language learning processes are scarce and results remain unclear. The objective of this study was to analyze whether tES enhances foreign language learning processes. Sixty-four healthy native Spanish-speaking participants were randomly assigned to four groups (transcranial direct current, transcranial random noise, tDCS-tRNS stimulation, or sham). They completed two intervention sessions with a two-week gap in be

Lexical Elaboration and Intentional Vocabulary Acquisition: An Eye-Tracking Study.

Prior research on lexical elaboration (providing additional information about unfamiliar words) has yielded non-significant effects on incidental vocabulary acquisition. Building on this, the present study used eye-tracking technology to examine whether similar results replicate under intentional learning conditions. Participants were Korean undergraduate students (N = 67) who were randomly assigned to one of three groups: baseline, unenhanced elaboration, or enhanced elaboration. They were instructed to read an English text twice while their eye movements were recorded. After reading, they re

Speaking up for vocabulary: reading skill differences in young adults.

This study is part of a broader project aimed at developing cognitive and neurocognitive profiles of adolescent and young adult readers whose educational and occupational prospects are constrained by their limited literacy skills. We explore the relationships among reading-related abilities in participants ages 16 to 24 years spanning a wide range of reading ability. Two specific questions are addressed: (a) Does the simple view of reading capture all nonrandom variation in reading comprehension? (b) Does orally assessed vocabulary knowledge account for variance in reading comprehension, as pr

Orthographic Facilitation of Oral Vocabulary Acquisition in Children With Hearing Loss.

Purpose Learning spoken words can be challenging for children with hearing loss who communicate orally and who are known to have weaker oral vocabulary skills than age-matched children who hear. Since vocabulary skills play a crucial role in reading and literacy acquisition, and academic success, it is important to identify effective vocabulary acquisition strategies for children with hearing loss. The aim of this study was to examine whether the incidental presence of orthography can facilitate oral vocabulary learning in children with hearing loss and whether the benefits are greater than th

Delayed Early Vocabulary Development in Children at Family Risk of Dyslexia.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to gain more insight into the relation between vocabulary and reading acquisition by examining early growth trajectories in the vocabulary of children at family risk (FR) of dyslexia longitudinally. METHOD: The sample included 212 children from the Dutch Dyslexia Program with and without an FR. Parents reported on their children's receptive and expressive vocabulary size at ages 17, 23, 29, and 35 months using the Dutch MacArthur Communicative Development Inventories. Dyslexia status at the end of Grade 2 (8 years) rendered 3 groups: FR-dyslexic (n = 51), FR-nondysle

A transactional model of spoken vocabulary variation in toddlers with intellectual disabilities.

PURPOSE: The authors examined (a) whether dose frequency of milieu communication teaching (MCT) affects children's canonical syllabic communication and (b) whether the relation between early canonical syllabic communication and later spoken vocabulary is mediated by parental linguistic mapping in children with intellectual disabilities (ID). METHOD: The authors drew on extant data from a recent differential treatment intensity study in which 63 toddlers with ID were randomly assigned to receive either five 1-hr MCT sessions per week (i.e., daily treatment) or one 1-hr MCT session per week (i.

Acquired oral reading vocabulary following the onset of amnesia in childhood.

While the neuropsychological literature includes few cases of child-onset amnesia, 2 previous case studies suggest that these patients may be able to learn new information of a semantic or academic nature. The previous studies were, in large part, based on neuropsychological testing performed during adulthood and a retrospective review of academic achievement test scores during childhood. We present patient A.C., who acquired severe anterograde amnesia at age 10 years but demonstrated average levels of performance on tests of reading, spelling and arithmetic upon examination at age 19 years. Exploring Vocabularies of Motive to Optimise Patient Engagement for Drug Development.

Patient engagement in the drug development life cycle is becoming normalised, and the return on investment is being quantified. We sought to understand what motivates biotechnology organisations to undertake patient engagement throughout the drug development life cycle, to enable us to generate theoretically and empirically grounded knowledge to optimise patient engagement. This paper draws upon ethnographic research including 200 hours of informal observation, 50 hours of formal observation, 10 interviews with biotechnology staff and documentary analysis. With patient input throughout this re

Psychometric properties of the Dutch version of the social interaction vocabulary task.

INTRODUCTION: Social functioning is affected in various ways in behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), and having tests available to assess aspects of social functioning increases the accuracy of diagnostic evaluation. One such aspect is having an accurate semantic representation of socio-emotional concepts. We designed a clinical test, the social interaction vocabulary task (SIVT), to capture this aspect. It requires participants to select a photo from a set of distractor photos that depicts a social interaction term most accurately, for example, the term "consoling." We showed i

The use of preferred target stimuli on the acquisition of a small foreign vocabulary.

There is a growing body of research examining the efficacy of teaching a foreign language using procedures that would lead to generative learning. This study assessed the acquisition of foreign tacts and the emergence of bidirectional intraverbal responses (native-foreign and foreign-native) as a function of target stimulus preference. Three children learned to tact two sets of pictures (low- and high-preferred targets) presented in an adapted alternating-treatments design. Emergent intraverbal responses were evaluated across both directions before and after instruction. The results showed tha

Dynamic assessment of word learning as a predictor of response to vocabulary intervention.

INTRODUCTION: The current study examined the extent to which static and dynamic measures of vocabulary and word learning predicted response and identified poor responders to a vocabulary intervention. METHODS: Participants were 46 preschool children in classrooms randomly assigned to complete the Story Friends intervention in two cluster-randomized efficacy trials. Children were administered a static measure of vocabulary knowledge and a dynamic assessment of explicit word learning prior to intervention. Vocabulary learning in response to intervention was assessed using a curriculum-based def

Neural substrate underlying the learning of a passage with unfamiliar vocabulary and syntax.

Speech comprehension is a complex process involving multiple stages, such as decoding of phonetic units, recognizing words, and understanding sentences and passages. In this study, we identify cortical networks beyond basic phonetic processing using a novel passage learning paradigm. Participants learn to comprehend a story composed of syllables of their native language, but containing unfamiliar vocabulary and syntax. Three learning methods are employed, each resulting in some degree of learning within a 12-min learning session. Functional magnetic resonance imaging results reveal that, when
