A Machine Learning Approach to Voice-Based Parkinson Disease Screening Using Multiview Spectrogram and Speech Recognition Features: Diagnostic Study.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson disease frequently manifests early vocal impairment, motivating the development of noninvasive and scalable digital screening tools. OBJECTIVE: This study proposes a multiview spectrogram-based deep learning framework integrating recognition-aware context for Parkinson disease detection from voice recordings. METHODS: Voice recordings from 203 participants (121 with Parkinson disease and 82 healthy controls) were collected prospectively. Three spectrogram representations (Mel, short-time Fourier transform, and constant-Q transform) were extracted and processed through p

Valuing student voices: a qualitative study on fair recognition and compensation practices for student partners in mental health research.

BACKGROUND: Post-secondary student mental health research increasingly calls for students to be engaged as equal partners, yet there is a lack of guidance on how to recognize and compensate their contributions. This study examines how student partners' contributions to post-secondary student mental health research should be recognized through qualitative insights from diverse interest groups. METHODS: We conducted qualitative, semi-structured interviews with 13 participants representing diverse interest groups: faculty researchers, student researchers, students with lived experience, and staf

The 'Reading the Mind in the Voice' test-revised: a study of complex emotion recognition in adults with and without autism spectrum conditions.

This study reports a revised version of the 'Reading the Mind in the Voice' (RMV) task. The original task (Rutherford et al., (2002), Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 32, 189-194) suffered from ceiling effects and limited sensitivity. To improve that, the task was shortened and two more foils were added to each of the remaining items. About 50 adults with Asperger Syndrome (AS) or High Functioning Autism (HFA) and 22 matched controls took the revised task. Results show the revised task has good reliability and validity, is harder, and more sensitive in distinguishing the AS/HFA g

Study on relationship between self-recognition of voice disorder and mental health status: Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

BACKGROUND: The voice has been thought to be associated with emotions, but conducting large-scale research on this relationship has some limitations. To overcome these limitations, questionnaires have been utilized as a research tool. METHODS: A population-based cross-sectional study was done. A total of 15,977 participants completed questionnaires regarding self-recognition of voice disorder (SRVD), and mental health status. RESULTS: 1053(6.6 %) participants answered that they had SRVD. In the multivariate Cox proportional hazard model, psychological stress (Hazard ratio (HR) = 1.371, 95 %

An Integrated Voice Recognition and Natural Language Processing Platform to Automatically Extract Thoracolumbar Injury Classification Score Features From Radiology Reports.

BACKGROUND: Many predictive models for estimating clinical outcomes after spine surgery have been reported in the literature. However, implementation of predictive scores in practice is limited by the time-intensive nature of manually abstracting relevant predictors. In this study, we designed natural language processing (NLP) algorithms to automate data abstraction for the thoracolumbar injury classification score (TLICS). METHODS: We retrieved the radiology reports of all Mayo Clinic patients with an International Classification of Diseases, 9th or 10th revision, code corresponding to a fra

Mental health problem recognition and stigma among emerging adults: Findings from the Voices for Well-Being Study (Project VOW).

PURPOSE: Emerging adults experience the highest rates of mental health problems but the lowest rates of treatment engagement among U.S. adults. Stigma is a well-known barrier to care, undermining outcomes along the mental health treatment cascade from symptom recognition to treatment seeking. In the present study, we examine differences in experiences of stigma among emerging adults based on the presence, recognition, and/or diagnosis of mental health problems. METHOD: The Voices for Well-Being (Project VOW) is a 12-wave longitudinal study of stigma and mental health in emerging adults (ages

Investigation of the neural substrates of voice recognition in Chinese schizophrenic patients with auditory verbal hallucinations: an event-related functional MRI study.

OBJECTIVE: Auditory hallucinations (AVHs), like real auditory perceptions, are often perceived as familiar voices. Given that neural correlates of AVHs involve the auditory cortex, it is likely that those brain regions responsible for recognition of voice identity are invoked during AVHs. METHOD: Schizophrenic patients with (n = 13) and without (n = 13) auditory hallucinations, and 13 healthy subjects performed a voice recognition task during functional magnetic resonance imaging at 1.5 T. In the task using prerecorded vocal stimuli, they classified voice as familiar and unfamiliar. RESULTS:

Comparing Individuals through the Speech Recognition Test Applied to Regional Live Voice and Recorded Speeches from Paraná State in Five Brazilian Counties.

Introduction  Speech tests such as logoaudiometry measure the ability to perceive and recognize oral sounds. The Speech Recognition Index (SRI) is one of the speech tests adopted in clinical routine; it uses standardized live voice and recorded speeches. The live voice speech method can be influenced by intra and interspeaker variability, as well as by regionalism variability, whereas recorded tests show consistency in their presentation. Objective  Analyzing results of the SRI test applied to live voice and recorded speeches from Paraná State, in different Brazilian counties. Method  The samp

A Low-Power, Self-Sustained Acoustic Node for Always-On Voice-Command Detection and Recognition Based on Triboelectric Nanogenerators and Edge Artificial Intelligence.

Always-on voice-command recognition is important for smart-home control and human-machine interaction, but continuous acoustic sensing, edge inference, and wireless transmission can rapidly drain batteries. Here, we report a low-power, self-sustained acoustic node for always-on voice-command detection and recognition that integrates triboelectric acoustic wake-up and sensing, hierarchical edge artificial intelligence (edge AI), on-demand Bluetooth transmission, photovoltaic energy harvesting and energy storage. Rather than keeping all modules continuously active, the system reduces energy cons

False alarms during recognition of famous people from faces and voices in patients with unilateral temporal lobe resection and normal participants tested after anodal tDCS over the left or right ATL.

Data gathered in the field of the experimental social psychology have shown that it is more difficult to recognize a person through his/her voice than through his/her face and that false alarms (FA) are produced more in voice than in face recognition. Furthermore, some neuropsychological investigations have suggested that in patients with damage to the right anterior temporal lobe (ATL) the number of FA could be higher for voice than for face recognition. In the present study we assessed FA during recognition of famous people from faces and voices in patients with unilateral ATL tumours and in

The processing of voice identity in developmental prosopagnosia.

BACKGROUND: Developmental prosopagnosia is a disorder of face recognition that is believed to reflect impairments of visual mechanisms. However, voice recognition has rarely been evaluated in developmental prosopagnosia to clarify if it is modality-specific or part of a multi-modal person recognition syndrome. OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to examine whether voice discrimination and/or recognition are impaired in subjects with developmental prosopagnosia. DESIGN/METHODS: 73 healthy controls and 12 subjects with developmental prosopagnosia performed a match-to-sample test of voice discrimination an

Developmental phonagnosia: a selective deficit of vocal identity recognition.

Phonagnosia, the inability to recognize familiar voices, has been studied in brain-damaged patients but no cases due to developmental problems have been reported. Here we describe the case of KH, a 60-year-old active professional woman who reports that she has always experienced severe voice recognition difficulties. Her hearing abilities are normal, and an MRI scan showed no evidence of brain damage in regions associated with voice or auditory perception. To better understand her condition and to assess models of voice and high-level auditory processing, we tested KH on behavioural tasks meas

Brain mechanism of unfamiliar and familiar voice processing: an activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis.

Interpersonal communication through vocal information is very important for human society. During verbal interactions, our vocal cord vibrations convey important information regarding voice identity, which allows us to decide how to respond to speakers (e.g., neither greeting a stranger too warmly or speaking too coldly to a friend). Numerous neural studies have shown that identifying familiar and unfamiliar voices may rely on different neural bases. However, the mechanism underlying voice identification of individuals of varying familiarity has not been determined due to vague definitions, co

Voice perception deficits: neuroanatomical correlates of phonagnosia.

Voice perception (recognition of familiar voices and discrimination of unfamiliar voices) was studied in brain-damaged patients and normal controls. Left- and right-brain-damaged subjects were tested on familiar voices (25 famous males) and 26 pairs of unfamiliar voices. Deficits in recognizing familiar voices were significantly correlated with right-hemisphere damage; discrimination of unfamiliar voices was worse in both clinical groups than in normal controls. Computerized tomographic scans indicated that an intact right parietal-lobe was present in all cases of normal voice recognition, whi

Phonagnosia: a dissociation between familiar and unfamiliar voices.

A dissociation between facial recognition and facial discrimination is well known, but investigations of "phonagnosia" (impairment of voice recognition and discrimination) have not been pursued. Using familiar and unfamiliar voices as stimuli, a marked difference between the ability to recognize familiar voice and the ability to discriminate between unfamiliar voices was identified in five patients, and a sixth showed a severe impairment in both tasks. Clinical and radiologic findings in these cases suggest that recognition of familiar voices is impaired by damage to inferior and lateral parie

An estimate of the prevalence of developmental phonagnosia.

A web-based survey estimated the distribution of voice recognition abilities with a focus on determining the prevalence of developmental phonagnosia, the inability to identify a familiar person based on their voice. Participants matched clips of 50 celebrity voices to 1-4 named headshots of celebrities whose voices they had previously rated for familiarity. Given a strong correlation between rated familiarity and recognition performance, a residual was calculated based on the average familiarity rating on each trial, which thus constituted each respondent's voice recognition ability that could

Famous faces and voices: Differential profiles in early right and left semantic dementia and in Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Famous face and voice recognition is reported to be impaired both in semantic dementia (SD) and in Alzheimer's Disease (AD), although more severely in the former. In AD a coexistence of perceptual impairment in face and voice processing has also been reported and this could contribute to the altered performance in complex semantic tasks. On the other hand, in SD both face and voice recognition disorders could be related to the prevalence of atrophy in the right temporal lobe (RTL). OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was twofold: (1) to investigate famous faces and voices reco

Voice processing in dementia: a neuropsychological and neuroanatomical analysis.

Voice processing in neurodegenerative disease is poorly understood. Here we undertook a systematic investigation of voice processing in a cohort of patients with clinical diagnoses representing two canonical dementia syndromes: temporal variant frontotemporal lobar degeneration (n = 14) and Alzheimer's disease (n = 22). Patient performance was compared with a healthy matched control group (n = 35). All subjects had a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment including measures of voice perception (vocal size, gender, speaker discrimination) and voice recognition (familiarity, identification,
