Gender-Affirming Voice Training Delivered by a Novel Mobile App: Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Gender-affirming voice training (GAVT) has reduced gender incongruence for transgender and gender-nonconforming (TGNC) individuals, but remains limited by cost and scarcity of specialized providers. Mobile health (mHealth) is a bridge to these access gaps; yet, few high-quality, clinically informed mHealth apps exist within voice clinical sciences. OBJECTIVE: We previously created a free mobile app (Attuned; Weill Cornell Medicine and Ithaca College) to deliver clinically informed GAVT through structured instructional videos narrated by a speech-language pathologist and a laryngol

[Long-term efficiency of vocal aptitude tests and voice training in student teachers].

OBJECTIVE: Teachers are subject to exceptionally high vocal stress throughout their lives and have an increased prevalence of voice disorders. The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term efficiency of voice training in student teachers during their lifelong career as a teacher. In addition, we investigated the relationship between vocal aptitude tests and teachers' vocal health. METHODS: In a multicentre case-control study, 202 teachers (median age: 48 years, 165 women, 37 men) were examined. The examination consisted of a standardised anamnesis, analysis of the voice, laryngostrobosc

Patient Satisfaction and Acoustic Changes in Trans Women after Gender Affirming Voice Training.

OBJECTIVES: Gains in pitch from gender affirming voice training (GVT) alone in trans women have historically been shown to decline after 1 year. Currently no standard exists for length and type of GVT that yields meaningful behavioral change and patient satisfaction with voice outcomes in trans women. This study aims to determine whether GVT alone leads to sustained pitch elevation and patient satisfaction in trans women. METHODS: Retrospective review from 2016 to 2020 of trans women patients who underwent GVT alone for voice change. Charts were reviewed for acoustic analysis of pitch includi

Effect of Auditory-Perceptual Training With Natural Voice Anchors on Vocal Quality Evaluation.

PURPOSE: To analyze the effects of auditory-perceptual training with anchor stimuli of natural voices on inter-rater agreement during the assessment of vocal quality. STUDY DESIGN: This is a quantitative nature study. METHODS: An auditory-perceptual training site was developed consisting of Programming Interface A, an auditory training activity, and Programming Interface B, a control activity. Each interface had three stages: pre-training/pre-interval evaluation, training/interval, and post-training/post-interval evaluation. Two experienced evaluators classified 381 voices according to the G

First-Person Perspectives of Gender-Affirming Voice Feminization Training: A Mixed Methods Approach.

OBJECTIVES: Despite evidence for the validity of using client-led outcome measures in gender-affirming voice training (GAVT), the existing body of research on voice feminization relies heavily on acoustic-perceptual measures without additional qualitative exploration of client experience. Additionally, the authors are not aware of any existing studies prompting client input on the voice feminization methods they find most helpful in achieving their voice goals. The current study focuses on crucial client perceptions of GAVT for voice feminization and identifies the methods clients find most he

Resonant Voice: Perceptual and Acoustic Analysis After an Intensive Lessac Kinesensic Training Workshop.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether actors' and actresses' voices post an Intensive Lessac Kinesensic Training Workshop - ILKTW can be perceptually identified as more resonant, and to assess if the Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI), the Acoustic Breathing Index (ABI), and their acoustic measures are able to indicate the classified voices as more resonant. METHODS: Eight vocally healthy English first-language actors and actresses, participants of the same ILKTW, were asked to sustain the vowel /a/ and to read a piece of the Rainbow Passage, pre and postworkshop, at a self-selected habitual fre

[Improvement of communication behavior of laryngectomized and voice-rehabilitated patients by a psychological training program].

An important goal of laryngectomee rehabilitation is achieving the best possible result in voice restoration. In addition to good voice quality, efficient intelligibility in daily conversation requires specific communication skills, which are very often neglected in speech therapy. In this study 51 male laryngectomees were randomized to an intervention group or an attention control group. After hospital discharge the intervention group participated in a psychological training program aimed at improving the communication behavior of the laryngectomees. This training was part of a comprehensive

An Unexpected Benefit of Adding the Patient Voice to Medical Education-Train Providers to Be Better.

BACKGROUND: Amyloidosis is a complex multisystemic disease. Lack of knowledge about amyloidosis and subsequent misdiagnosis or underdiagnosis are major obstacles to treatment that result in life-threatening organ damage, heart failure, morbidity, and mortality. At present, medical didactic education about amyloidosis leaves new physicians woefully unprepared to suspect and diagnose it. A study published in 2023 confirmed a positive impact on medical students following a patient presentation. Continued analysis of the study data revealed an unexpected benefit of adding the patient voice to medi

Factors contributing to clinician training and development in the clinical area of laryngectomy and tracheoesophageal voice.

BACKGROUND: It has long been recognized that tracheoesophageal speech (TES) rehabilitation after laryngectomy is a specialized area of practice for speech and language therapist (SLTs) due to the complex nature of patient presentation and the invasive components of the SLT's role in this area. Therefore, postgraduate experience and training is required to work competently and safely in this clinical area. However, it is generally acknowledged that the steps and processes followed by individual clinicians to achieve this training and clinical skill development are inconsistent and vary widely a

Effects of voice training and voice hygiene education on acoustic and perceptual speech parameters and self-reported vocal well-being in female teachers.

Voice education programs may help in optimizing teachers' voice use. This study compared effects of voice training (VT) and voice hygiene lecture (VHL) in 60 randomly assigned female teachers. All 60 attended the lecture, and 30 completed a short training course in addition. Text reading was recorded in working environments and analyzed for fundamental frequency (F0), equivalent sound level (Leq), alpha ratio, jitter, shimmer, and perceptual quality. Self-reports of vocal well-being were registered. In the VHL group, increased F0 and difficulty of phonation and in the VT group decreased pertur

Embedding the public voice in clinical trials: developing public-informed training for patient data research.

BACKGROUND: The use of health systems data (HSD) such as patient records and prescriptions is expanding within clinical trials to improve efficiency, reduce participant burden, and enhance real‑world relevance. However, challenges remain around governance, data quality, transparency and public trust, echoed through discussions in this project. While Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement is increasingly embedded in trial design, involvement in methodological and data‑focused areas remains limited. Ensuring that HSD trial training for researchers and public reflects public perspectives i
