Socioeconomic inequalities in early childhood caries: evidence from vulnerable populations in Colombia.

The Colombian Chapter of the Alliance-for-a-Cavity-Free-Future (Col-ACFF) has been conducting a health promotion and caries prevention program among young children in four vulnerable Colombian municipalities (baseline data from 2012-2014). This study aimed to quantify socioeconomic inequalities in early childhood caries (ECC) and examine the potential role of daily fluoride-toothpaste use, previous-year dental-care visit, and nutrition/diet-related aspects. The study sample included 1344 children aged 1-5 years. Inequalities in the age-standardized prevalence rates of and mean number of tooth

Impact of isoniazid monoresistance on overall and vulnerable patient populations in Taiwan.

Isoniazid is an early bactericidal anti-tuberculosis (TB) agent and isoniazid mono-resistance TB is the most prevalent drug-resistant TB worldwide. Concerns exist regarding whether resistance to isoniazid would lead to delayed culture conversion and worst outcomes. From January 2008 to November 2017, adult culture-positive pulmonary TB patients receiving isoniazid, rifampicin, pyrazinamide, and ethambutol were identified through Taiwan Center for Disease Control database and were followed until the end of 2017. Primary outcomes included time to sputum culture conversion (SCC) within two months

Burden of tuberculosis among vulnerable populations worldwide: an overview of systematic reviews.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis is a communicable disease of public health concern that inequitably impacts the most vulnerable populations worldwide. Vulnerable populations are those with a high risk for tuberculosis disease and whose disadvantaged or marginalised socioeconomic position limits their access to the health system. We conducted an overview of reviews that aimed to assess the burden (ie, prevalence and incidence) of tuberculosis disease among 12 vulnerable populations globally. METHODS: We did an overview of reviews using a systematic search in MEDLINE, Embase, and the Cochrane Database

Care for Vulnerable Populations with Chronic Liver Disease: A Safety-Net Perspective.

Safety-net hospitals (SNHs) and facilities are the cornerstone of healthcare services for the medically underserved. The burden of chronic liver disease-including end-stage manifestations of cirrhosis and liver cancer-is high and rising among populations living in poverty who primarily seek and receive care in safety-net settings. For many reasons related to social determinants of health, these individuals often present with delayed diagnoses and disease presentations, resulting in higher liver-related mortality. With recent state-based policy changes such as Medicaid expansion that impact acc

Vaccine promotion strategies in community pharmacy addressing vulnerable populations: a scoping review.

CONTEXT: Social determinants of health are drivers of vaccine inequity and lead to higher risks of complications from infectious diseases in under vaccinated communities. In many countries, pharmacists have gained the rights to prescribe and administer vaccines, which contributes to improving vaccination rates. However, little is known on how they define and target vulnerable communities. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to describe how vulnerable communities are targeted in community pharmacies. METHODS: We performed a systematic search of the Embase and MEDLINE database in August 20

Decline in Cancer Screening in Vulnerable Populations? Results of the EDIFICE Surveys.

BACKGROUND: We studied cancer screening over time and social vulnerability via surveys of representative populations. METHODS: Individuals aged 50-75 years with no personal history of cancer were questioned about lifetime participation in screening tests, compliance (adherence to recommended intervals [colorectal, breast and cervical cancer]) and opportunistic screening (prostate and lung cancer). RESULTS: The proportion of vulnerable/non-vulnerable individuals remained stable between 2011 and 2016. In 2011, social vulnerability had no impact on screening participation, nor on compliance. In

Nursing their way not our way: working with vulnerable and marginalised populations.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This paper uses the findings of two studies to explore the nature of nurses practice when working with vulnerable and marginalised populations, particularly with regard to the attributes of holism and individualised care. A secondary analysis of the findings of two separate studies was undertaken, one on the elderly with delirium and the other with indigenous Maori women. BACKGROUND: Often considered vulnerable and marginalised, elderly and indigenous experiences of health services are often fraught with their health needs not always identified or addressed. Nursing claim

Vulnerable populations in Thailand: giving voice to women living with HIV/AIDS.

Thailand was the first Asian country hit by the AIDS epidemic, and in the 1990s reported the fastest spread of HIV/AIDS in the world. According to Thailand's Ministry of Public Health, women, primarily between the child-bearing ages of 15 and 49, are increasingly becoming infected with HIV. A number of factors contribute to the increasing AIDS epidemic, including the rise of the commercial sex industry in Thailand; social disparities that have existed between men and women throughout Thailand's history; and the gender-expectations faced by Thai women toward family and society. Thailand enjoys

Profiling hydrophobic organic pollutants in serum from vulnerable populations in Dalian, China.

Human are exposed to synthetic chemical mixtures via multiple pathways, causing potential health risks especially for vulnerable populations. Biomonitoring studies are vital to understand the health outcomes of chemical mixtures. Yet, most existing research focused only on specific chemicals and seldom compared different vulnerable populations. Herein, we developed a high-coverage approach for comprehensive analysis of 986 hydrophobic organic pollutants (HOPs) in human serum via a GC-Orbitrap-MS. Then, we investigated the HOPs in serum from pregnant women, older adults, and children, and 204,

Can in silico models predict drug-induced cardiac risk in vulnerable populations?

This study evaluates virtual cardiac populations for preclinical assessment of drug-induced QT interval prolongation and arrhythmic risk. Traditional predictions often rely on small, healthy cohorts, excluding vulnerable populations. Using computational models of realistic heart anatomies and electrophysiology, we generated a virtual cohort of 512 subjects across healthy and diseased hearts (heart failure, dilated and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, ischaemia, and myocardial infarction). We assessed QT prolongation and arrhythmic events following administration of moxifloxacin (benchmark antibiot

The Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic on Smoking Among Vulnerable Populations.

AIM: While accumulating evidence suggests that people modified their smoking during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it remains unclear whether those most at risk for tobacco-related health disparities did so. The current study examined changes in smoking among several vulnerable smoker populations during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: A web-based survey was distributed in 2020 to 709 adults with socioeconomic disadvantage, affective disorders, or opioid use disorder who participated in a previous study investigating the effects of very low nicotine content (VLNC) cigarettes on smoking. Housing for vulnerable populations-identifying system cost implications: an analytic literature review.

We explored how investments in housing for vulnerable populations (including those experiencing homelessness) are described as leading to cost containment for the health, justice, and social service systems; the nature of any costs and benefits; and variations by housing type and over time. A structured search of peer-reviewed academic research focused on the core concepts of economic benefit, public housing programs, and vulnerable populations. Findings from 42 articles reporting on cost containment specific to health, justice, and social service systems at the municipal, regional, and/or sta

Narrative Review: Addressing Covid-19 Vaccine Concerns in Special and Vulnerable Populations.

Public health advocates and healthcare professionals (HCPs) have been challenged with vaccine hesitancy and addressing misinformation. In order for HCPs and pharmacists, in particular, to serve as effective stewards of COVID-19 vaccine science in the interest of the public good, it is imperative for HCPs to appreciate the various factors contributing to vaccine hesitancy and vaccine distrust. A PubMed search was performed and relevant articles on COVID-19 vaccine in populations of interest were included. Information from health agencies, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (

HepCCATT: a multilevel intervention for hepatitis C among vulnerable populations in Chicago.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis C infection could be eliminated. Underdiagnosis and lack of treatment are the barriers to cure, especially for vulnerable populations (i.e. unable to pay for health care). METHODS: A multilevel intervention from September 2014 to September 2019 focused on the providers and organizations in 'the safety net' (providing health care to populations unable to pay), including: (i) public education, (ii) training for primary care providers (PCPs) and case managers, (iii) case management for high-risk populations, (iv) policy advice and (v) a registry (Registry) for 13 health cen

Minimal clinically important difference in means in vulnerable populations: challenges and solutions.

INTRODUCTION AND MOTIVATION: Many health studies measure a continuous outcome and compare means between groups. Since means for biological data are often difficult to interpret clinically, it is common to dichotomise using a cut-point and present the 'percentage abnormal' alongside or in place of means. Examples include birthweight where 'abnormal' is defined as <2500 g (low birthweight), systolic blood pressure with abnormal defined as >140 mm Hg (high blood pressure) and lung function with varying definitions of the 'limit of normal'. In vulnerable populations with low means, for example, bi

Communities of Practice: Transforming Medical Education and Clinical Practice for Vulnerable Populations.

The report defines the theory behind communities of practice as a model to transform medical education and clinical practice for vulnerable populations (LGBTQ, persons experiencing homelessness, and migrant farm workers). It also offers lessons learned from this model to demonstrate value creation by communities of practice in medical education.

[Economic Effect of Home Health Care Services for Community-dwelling Vulnerable Populations].

PURPOSE: In this study the costs and benefits of a home health care program were examined to evaluate the economic feasibility of the program. METHODS: The study participants included 349 patients in the community who had been registered at a home health care center for 5 years. The costs and benefits of the program were analyzed using performance data and health data. The benefits were classified as the effects of pressure ulcer care, skin wound care and catheters management. The program effect was evaluated on the change of progress using transition probability. Benefits were divided into d

Nursing faculty: a vulnerable population.

Nursing faculty are seldom viewed as a vulnerable population, yet those who teach nursing are susceptible to physical, psychological, and emotional harm from students, peers, and administrators. Such harm can arise from uncivil or dangerous encounters with students, horizontal violence from colleagues, and abuse of power by administrators. Although faculty vulnerability is a serious issue, strategies exist that can minimize the problem.
