[A case report of wandering spleen].

INTRODUCTION: Wandering spleen is a rare condition that occurs when there is an acquired or congenital hypelaxity of the suspensory ligaments of the spleen, resulting in its migration to any abdominal or pelvic position. CASE REPORT: A 43-year-old woman presented with symptoms of acute abdominal pain. At physical examination, a splenomegaly was found in the left hypochondria, thereafter followed by a secondary migration of the lump to a periumbilical location. Computed tomography revealed a wandering spleen with vascular pedicle torsion. Splenopexia was perfomed. CONCLUSION: A wandering sple

Splenic volvulus of a wandering spleen.

BACKGROUND: Wandering spleen is a rare condition in which the spleen is not anchored properly, due to congenital or acquired weakness of the splenic ligaments. This allows the spleen to migrate to any portion of the abdomen or pelvis, and can cause complications, including a splenic volvulus. The presentation of splenic volvulus of a wandering spleen ranges from mild pain to a surgical emergency. Splenic volvulus of a wandering spleen can cause significant morbidity and mortality, and often warrants surgical intervention. Cases of splenic volvulus of a wandering spleen have been reported in ra

Unusual pseudocyst in a wandering spleen.

Pseudocysts of the spleen are rare, generally asymptomatic lesions developing secondary to trauma, infection or infarction. When symptomatic, they typically present as non-specific pain in the left hypochondrium, with or without a palpable lump on clinical examination. However, these conventions fail when they occur in a wandering spleen, making imaging critically important. This report describes an unusual case of a 50-year-old who presented with a large cystic mass in a pelvic spleen; imaging facilitated a successful splenectomy and subsequent histopathology revealed a pseudocyst in a wander

Emergencies in the Treatment of Wandering Spleen.

BACKGROUND: Wandering spleen is a rare entity that may pose a surgical emergency following torsion of the splenic vessels, mainly because of a delayed diagnosis. Complications after surgery for wandering spleen may necessitate emergency treatment. OBJECTIVES: To describe the clinical course and treatment for children who underwent emergency surgeries for wandering spleen at a tertiary pediatric medical center over a 21 year period and to indicate the pitfalls in diagnosis and treatment as reflected by our experience and in the literature. METHODS: The database of a tertiary pediatric medical

Torsion of Wandering Spleen with Infarction.

Wandering spleen is a rare entity that results from the absence or maldevelopment of the ligaments that support the spleen in its normal location. As a result, the spleen is hypermobile and may be predisposed to hilar torsion and subsequent infarction, making it a potentially fatal abdominal emergency. We present a case of a 36-year-old Afghan female who presented with an acute abdomen, and was radiologically and surgically confirmed to have a wandering spleen with torsion and complete infarction. Knowledge of this condition and its radiological findings can play a crucial role in making a cor

Acute torsion of a wandering spleen.

The 'wandering spleen' is a rare condition due to extreme laxity or absence of ligaments that fix the organ in its normal anatomical position within the left upper quadrant. Without early surgical intervention, wandering spleen can lead to torsion and subsequent splenic infarction or rupture. Clinical suspicion plus urgent investigation and intervention are important, so as to salvage the spleen and prevent complications. We present a case of torsion of a wandering spleen in a 21-year-old young woman, who presented with a painful pelvic mass. We also reviewed the literature on this entity.

Thrombocytopenia in association with a wandering spleen.

An ectopic, so-called wandering spleen is an uncommon occurrence. We present the case of a young woman who presented with abdominal pain and was found to have an enlarged spleen, located in the lower abdomen and pelvis. The possibility of lymphoma was entertained because of concomitant findings of thrombocytopenia and a possible mesenteric mass. The mass was subsequently found at laparotomy to be the tail of the malpositioned pancreas, and the thrombocytopenia resolved with splenectomy. Review of the literature indicates that lymphoma is an uncommon finding in wandering spleens, that wandering

Chronic torsion of the wandering spleen.

Torsion of a wandering spleen can occasionally produce chronic disabling clinical findings that are mistaken for a variety of digestive disturbances. Since the clinical complaints are misleading, a correct and timely radiographic analysis can prevent an extensive but unnecessary pursuit of other more common conditions. Images of an ectopic, enlarged, disoriented spleen with a devitalized parenchyma and adherent pseudocapsule can quickly establish the diagnosis of chronic splenic torsion.

Wandering spleen with volvulus of pancreas.

Abnormal location of the spleen, which is called wandering spleen, results from laxity or absence of the splenic pedicle. In the presence of an elongated splenic pedicle, torsion of the spleen or neighboring organs may occur, which results in acute or chronic abdominal pain. In this case report, we present imaging findings of a wandering spleen that manifested with volvulus of the pancreas.

Epidermoid cyst in a wandering spleen.

A wandering spleen and splenic cysts are uncommon conditions in children. A combination of both entities has only rarely been reported in the literature. Another case of this complex pathology in 12-year-old girl is presented. She was initially referred for evaluation of a large abdominal mass. Diagnostic studies raised the suspicion of a hematoma in an abnormally located spleen, but the definitive diagnosis was established at laparotomy. Successful surgical management consisted of total cystectomy and splenopexy.

Wandering Spleen Torsion: A Diagnostic Challenge.

Wandering spleen, or hypermobile spleen, arises from the elongation or maldevelopment of the spleen's suspensory ligaments. This condition is a rare clinical entity, primarily affecting children, with a higher prevalence among adult females in the active reproductive age group. Manifestations may include an asymptomatic abdominal mass or intermittent abdominal discomfort due to the torsion and subsequent spontaneous detorsion of the spleen. This case report details the presentation of a 14-year-old female initially misdiagnosed as having gastroenteritis who later experienced acute abdomen. Sub

[Wandering spleen associated to inflammatory pseudotumor].

Wandering spleen is an uncommon clinical entity accounting for less than 0.5% of all splenectomies performed. It can be an incidental finding in asymptomatic patients or it can be found in patients with acute or chronic clinical presentation due to compression (urinary retention, constipation), alterations in splenic function (thrombocytopenia or hypersplenism), or torsion of a vascular pedicle. Wandering spleen is diagnosed by imaging techniques, usually ultrasound, CT, or MRI. scintigraphy or arteriography can also be useful in cases with inconclusive findings. Although cases of wandering sp

Laparoscopic splenopexy for wandering (pelvic) spleen.

Wandering spleen is a rare clinical diagnosis with a high incidence of splenic torsion and infarction. The preferred treatment for this condition currently is splenopexy to reposition and fixate the spleen in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen to preserve splenic function. We recently performed the first splenopexy for a wandering spleen using laparoscopic techniques. The patient was a 19-year-old woman who had an asymptomatic lower abdominal/pelvic mass found on physical examination. Diagnostic evaluation (ultrasound, computed tomography scan, and liver-spleen scan) showed an absent splee

Wandering spleen: anatomic and radiologic considerations.

Wandering spleen is a rare clinical entity and remains an elusive clinical diagnosis, particularly in the pediatric patient. Among the imaging modalities (computerized tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear medicine, ultrasonography, plain films) used in the diagnosis of wandering spleen, ultrasonography is the least invasive and most effective. Elective splenopexy remains the treatment of choice when the diagnosis is made before splenic infarction. We present two cases of wandering spleen manifested as a lower abdominal mass, and we discuss the surgical anatomy of the spleen and sple
