Interventions for Children Affected by Armed Conflict: a Systematic Review of Mental Health and Psychosocial Support in Low- and Middle-Income Countries.

Over one billion children under the age of 18 live in countries affected by armed conflict. This systematic review replicates an earlier study, aiming to provide a comprehensive update of the most current developments in interventions for children affected by armed conflict. For the period 2009-2015, a total of 1538 records were collected from PubMed, PsycINFO, and PILOTS. Twenty-four studies met the inclusion criteria, and the included interventions involve data from 4858 children. Although the number of publications and level of evidence has improved since the previous review, there is still

Reactivators of acetylcholinesterase inhibited by organophosphorus nerve agents.

Since the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the United States, the specter of a chemical threat against civilian populations has renewed research interest in chemical warfare agents, their mechanisms of action, and treatments that reverse their effects. In this Account, we focus specifically on organophosphorus nerve agents (OPNAs). Although some OPNAs are used as pest control, the most toxic chemicals in this class are used as chemical warfare agents in armed conflicts. The acute toxicity of OPNAs results from the irreversible inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE, EC 3.1.1.7) via t

Trauma stabilization points in armed conflict: operational evolution and strategic reflections from mosul to Gaza.

BACKGROUND: Forward trauma care remains a critical gap in emergency responses to armed conflict, particularly where conventional medical evacuation is disrupted. Trauma Stabilization Points (TSPs) were introduced in previous conflicts to bring life-saving care closer to the point of injury. To improve standards and adaptability, the World Health Organization convened a Technical Working Group to develop operational guidance for TSPs, drawing on diverse field experiences, including the ongoing Gaza deployments. CASE PRESENTATION: Between February and July 2024, three TSPs were established in G

Medical education under siege: the war's impact on medical and paramedical Sudanese students.

BACKGROUND: Medical education is pivotal in shaping healthcare systems globally. In Sudan, the war that erupted on the 15th of April 2023 has imposed significant implications and challenges for medical education in Sudan. The continuity and quality of medical education remains fragile, especially in the face of ongoing armed conflict. This study aims to examine the impact of the Sudanese war on medical students' educational experiences. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional quantitative survey assessed the impact of the Sudan war on medical students' education. From April to November 20

Adolescents during wartime: Vulnerability-based profiles.

Adolescents in war zones face the dual burden of normative developmental challenges and stressors from their proximity to active conflict, raising critical questions about their vulnerability during wartime. The aim of the current study was to identify distinct vulnerability profiles among Israeli adolescents (ages 11-18) during Israel's ongoing Swords of Iron War. Drawing on Hobfoll's conservation of resources theory, we assessed protective factors (positive affect, resilience, and perceived social support) and one risk factor (war-related adjustment disorder symptoms). Differences in profile

Modelling excess mortality from non-communicable diseases during wartime: application to the Gaza Strip, occupied Palestinian territories.

BACKGROUND: Patients with non-communicable diseases (NCDs) face multiple risks of excess mortality during wars. The Gaza Strip's health services have been severely disrupted by Israel's campaign since October 2023. We developed a modelling approach to project NCD excess mortality under three defined scenarios. METHODS: We projected excess mortality from cancer (lung, colorectal, and breast), cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus type 1 patients, and chronic kidney disease requiring haemodialysis from February 2024 to August 2024. We defined three scenarios of treatment coverage: (i) cease

Mustard gas toxicity: the acute and chronic pathological effects.

Ever since it was first used in armed conflict, mustard gas (sulfur mustard, MG) has been known to cause a wide range of acute and chronic injuries to exposure victims. The earliest descriptions of these injuries were published during and in the immediate aftermath of the First World War, and a further series of accounts followed the Second World War. More recently, MG has been deployed in warfare in the Middle East and this resulted in large numbers of victims, whose conditions have been studied in detail at hospitals in the region. In this review, we bring together the older and more recent

Initial management of haemorrhagic war casualties: tactical priorities and innovative approaches in modern and future warfare.

BACKGROUND: Haemorrhage remains the leading cause of preventable death in modern armed conflict, affecting both combatants and civilians. Recent conflicts-particularly the ongoing conflict in Ukraine- have highlighted the increasing complexity of battlefield injuries, characterised by hybrid warfare, disrupted evacuation chains, and delayed access to definitive surgical care. These realities challenge traditional trauma paradigms, such as the "Golden Hour" and demand adaptation of haemorrhage control and resuscitation strategies to austere environment. CONTENT: This narrative review synthesiz

Responses of mental health professionals to man-made trauma: the Israeli experience.

The reactions and responses of mental health professionals in the area of armed conflict is the focus of this paper. It examines the way the therapeutic community has dealt with the survivors of two catastrophes-the Holocaust and warfare. A parallel process of a gradual change of attitudes towards the survivors was observed: emotional detachment, lack of recognition in the early stages and, eventually, social acceptance and empathy. The origins of these attitudes will be discussed, and three explanations will be offered. Israel is a small, stress-ridden country that has known seven full-scale

Analysis of Burn Casualties in the Swords of Iron War.

The Swords of Iron (SOI) War is an armed conflict between Israel and Hamas, which has been taking place in Gaza from October 2023 until the present time of writing this article. This war is characterized by urban close-contact combat. The combat equipment, weaponry, and protective measures employed differ markedly from those in previously documented major conflicts, significantly impacting the types of injuries sustained by soldiers. This study examines the number of injured soldiers in combat, field mortality rates, incidence of burns and trauma, demographic details of the injured, causes and

[Orthopedics and trauma surgery in national and collective defence : Resilient emergency and palliative care in crises and armed conflict situations].

BACKGROUND: The current European political security environment is very tense due to the return of conventional and hybrid warfare. National and collective defence have again become key political tasks. In this context, the resilience of the healthcare system, understood as critical infrastructures contributing to social cohesion, institutional trust and democratic stability, have moved to center stage. Orthopedics and trauma surgery (O&U) are central to injury care, while palliative medicine represents an essential component of humane and functional healthcare provision in crises and armed co

Mental Health of Ukrainian Adolescents After Russian Invasions.

IMPORTANCE: Russia first invaded Ukraine in 2014, annexing the Crimean Peninsula and occupying parts of eastern Ukraine. On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion that is currently ongoing. Despite the chronic nature of the armed conflict, evidence of its cumulative impact on adolescent mental health since 2014 remains limited. OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of wartime traumatic stressors, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, depressive symptoms, and suicidality and to examine the differential associations of war exposure with adolescent mental health. DESIGN

The effects of war-related experiences on mental health symptoms of individuals living in conflict zones: a longitudinal study.

On October 7, 2023, a large-scale attack in southern Israel and the subsequent war resulted in extensive loss of life and injuries, with many individuals experiencing traumatic losses, such as family members or close friends being killed or kidnapped. This study aims to longitudinally examine its effects on mental health, specifically, clinical symptoms of anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We anticipated greater symptom severity among individuals who experienced traumatic loss, were forcibly displaced, or suffered income loss, as well as among women and members of

Use of benzodiazepines, Z-drugs and SSRIs during wartime in Israel - a national cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Armed conflict can lead to increased stress, anxiety, and other psychological conditions. Benzodiazepines (BZDs), Z-drugs, and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are used for stress-related conditions and sleep disturbances. This study aimed to identify the demographic and geographic predictors of BZD, Z-drug, and SSRI use during the first year of the 2023 Israel- Hamas war in Israel, while comparing these patterns to pre-war utilization trends. METHODS: Using data of 557,830 adults from the Meuhedet health maintenance organization, we compared the use of BZDs, Z-drugs

Comparative analysis and evolution of civilian versus combatant mortality ratios in Israel-Gaza conflicts, 2008-2023.

BACKGROUND: There is a need for statistical methodologies that scrutinize civilian casualties in conflicts, evaluating the degree to which the conduct of war affects civilians and breaches the laws of war. Employing an epidemiological method, this study introduced, developed, and applied a novel approach for investigating mortality of civilians versus combatants in conflicts. METHODS: A deterministic mathematical model, structured by age and sex, was developed to describe the process of conflict-related deaths among both combatants and civilians. The model was calibrated using demographic and

Revisiting leishmaniasis in the time of war: the Syrian conflict and the Lebanese outbreak.

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis is a neglected tropical disease, endemic in many worldwide foci including the Middle East. Several outbreaks have occurred in the Middle East over the past decades, mostly related to war-associated population migration. With the start of the Syrian war, the frequency and magnitude of these outbreaks increased alarmingly. We describe the epidemiology of Leishmania infection in Lebanon and the most recent outbreak relevant to the Syrian war. METHODS: We reviewed all leishmaniasis cases reported to the Epidemiologic Surveillance Department at the Lebanese Ministry of Pu

Psychiatric care at a national mental institution during the Spanish Civil War (1936-39): Santa Isabel de Leganés.

The scanty research available regarding the health of the mentally ill during the Spanish Civil War is largely due to the loss of most documents, and to the difficulty in accessing the existing archives for decades. Up to the present time, historiography has described overcrowded facilities for the mentally disturbed and the fact that old buildings such as convents and spas were turned into establishments for treating patients with mental problems during the Civil War. However, research reviewing the institutional life and conditions of psychiatric patients during this war is still rather scar

Mechanism of injury and microbiological flora of the geographical location are essential for the prognosis in soldiers with serious warfare injuries.

INTRODUCTION: Denmark has been engaged in the Afghanistan war and as a result, Rigshospitalet has received a number of multi-traumatized Danish soldiers. Lesions sustained in armed conflict differ from their civilian counterparts and knowledge of the pathophysiology related to these types of lesions is essential when engaging in the intensive care of these patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was conducted as a retrospective survey of Danish soldiers evacuated from Afghanistan to the Intensive Care Unit at Rigshospitalet in the 2002-2012 period.
