Environmental assessment of municipal solid waste composting: comparing landfilling and incineration scenarios towards a sustainable approach.

Driven by the high content of organic materials in municipal solid waste (MSW) of 70% in Iran and the growing demand for mineral fertilizer, refinement of composting technology is imperative. In the pursuit of environmental sustainability, further investigation into the life cycle assessment of the composting process and end-of-life waste management must be conducted. Hence, this study scrutinizes the environmental burdens of the composting plant operation from cradle to gate. Because 50% of raw MSW was not converted to compost, its final disposal was evaluated based on incineration, landfill,

Surface emission determination of selected trace gases from an active municipal solid waste dumpsite under the surface physicochemical heterogeneity.

Karadiyana municipal solid waste (MSW) dumpsite in Colombo, Sri Lanka, has been in operation for over 30 years and was evaluated for its surface Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), Ammonia (NH3), and Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) emissions. Based on the surface conditions and waste characters, the dump surface was divided into eight cells, and multiple samplings were done using static flux chamber methods. The study observed that the average flux rates of VOCs, H2S, and NH3 were 137.2 ± 243.8, 6.63 ± 15.9, and 14.2 ± 16.2 mg m-2h-1 throughout the dump site. The highest average VOCs and H2S flux rates

Innovative dual-step management of semi-aerobic landfill in a tropical climate.

Despite concerted efforts to innovate the solid waste management (SWM) system, land disposal continues to represent the most widely used technology in the treatment of urban solid waste worldwide. On the other hand, landfilling is an unavoidable step in closing the material cycle, since final residues, although minimized, need to be safely disposed of and confined. In recent years, the implementation of more sustainable landfilling aims to achieve the Final Storage Quality conditions as fast as possible. In particular, semi-aerobic landfill appears to represent an effective solution for use in

Ambient air monitoring of Beijing MSW logistics facilities in 2006.

In China, "green" integrated waste management methods are being implemented in response to environmental concerns. We measured the air quality at several municipal solid waste (MSW) sites to provide information for the incorporation of logistics facilities within the current integrated waste management system. We monitored ambient air quality at eight MSW collecting stations, five transfer stations, one composting plant, and five disposal sites in Beijing during April 2006. Composite air samples were collected and analyzed for levels of odor, ammonia (NH3), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), total suspen

Valorizing Landfill Gas Condensate as an External Carbon Source for Denitrification in Sewage-Landfill Leachate Co-Treatment.

Landfill gas condensate (LFGC) is an underused byproduct that could reduce the cost and environmental impact of purchased external carbon for biological nitrogen removal. This study tested LFGC as a denitrification carbon source in sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) co-treating municipal sewage and landfill leachate. Four lab-scale SBRs operated for 170 days with 98.5% sewage and 1.5% landfill leachate, supplemented with methanol, glycerin, sodium acetate, or LFGC. All reactors performed stably, achieving total nitrogen removal efficiencies of 93.1%-93.8% and effluent nitrate below 1 mg N/L. The

Evaluating the efficacy of biogeochemical cover system in mitigating landfill gas emissions: A large-scale laboratory simulation.

Municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills are a significant source of methane (CH4) emissions in the United States, contributing to global warming. Current landfill gas (LFG) management methods, like the landfill cover system and LFG collection system, do not entirely prevent LFG release. Biocovers have the potential to reduce CH4 emissions through microbial oxidation. However, LFG also contains carbon dioxide (CO2) and trace hydrogen sulfide (H2S) depending on waste composition, temperature, moisture content, and age of waste. An innovative biogeochemical cover (BGCC) was developed to tackle thes

In-situ removal of odorous NH3 and H2S by loess modified with biologically stabilized leachate.

The loess regions distribute widely in Northwestern China, North America and Eastern Europe. For these regions, landfill is a suitable technology for solid waste treatment. However, as a landfill cover material, loess is not very effective in controlling the emission of malodorous gases. The present study modified loess with biologically stabilized leachate, and investigated the capacities and mechanisms of the modified loess to remove odorous NH3 and H2S. The removal rates of NH3 and H2S at different acclimation time, targeted gas concentrations and temperatures were measured. It was found th

Aging of disposable face masks in landfill leachate poses cyto-genotoxic risks to Allium cepa: Perils of uncontrolled disposal of medical waste.

The accumulation of disposable face masks (DFMs) has become a significant threat to the environment due to extensive use during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this research, we investigated the degradation of DFMs after their disposal in landfills. We replicated the potential degradation process of DFMs, including exposure to sunlight before subjecting them to synthetic landfill leachate (LL). After exposure to UV radiation, all three layers of the DFMs displayed surface abrasions and fractures, becoming less stable with increased UV exposure duration, indicating an aging process. Changes in the su

An integrated life cycle multi-objective optimization model for health-environment-economic nexus in food waste management sector.

Food waste is a universal problem in many countries. In line with Sustainable Development Goals 7 and 12, it is crucial to identify a cost-effective food waste valorization management framework with the least human health and environmental impacts. However, studies on the synergistic effect of life cycle assessment and mathematical optimization interconnected with human health, environment, and economic are relatively few and far between; hence they cannot provide holistic recommendations to policymakers in developing environmental and economic feasibility of food waste management frameworks.

Exploring into a light-avoided environment: Mechanical-thermal coupled conditions responsible for the aging behavior of plastic waste in landfills.

Plastics in landfills undergo a unique micronization process due to multi-factor and light-avoided conditions, but their aging process in such a typical environment remains unexplored. This study investigated the aging behavior of polyethylene plastics, representative of landfills, under simulated dynamic mechanical forces and high temperature-two prevalent environmental factors in landfills. The study explored the individual and combined contributions of these factors to the aging process. Results indicated that high temperature played a primary role in aging plastics by depolymerization and

Mitigation of methane and trace gas emissions through a large-scale active biofilter system at Glatved landfill, Denmark.

Biocover systems are a cost-effective technology utilised to mitigate methane (CH4) and trace gas emissions from landfills. A full-scale biofilter system was constructed at Glatved landfill, Denmark, consisting of three biofilters with a total area of 3950 m2. Landfill gas collected mainly from shredder waste cells was mixed with ambient air and fed actively into the biofilter, resulting in an average load of 60-75 g m-2 d-1 for CH4 and 0.15-0.21 g m-2 d-1 for trace gases (e.g., aromatics, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), aliphatic hydrocarbons). The initial CH4 surface screening showed uneven gas
