Healthcare facilities generate various types of waste, including hazardous waste, which poses significant risks to health and the environment if not managed properly. In many developing countries like Ethiopia, hazardous waste is often treated the same as general waste, leading to contamination of healthcare workers, patients, and communities. While healthcare workers play a key role in managing hazardous waste and most studies in Ethiopia have focused on general waste management. Therefore, this study aims to assess hazardous healthcare waste management practices and associated factors among

Bioaerosol emissions from biological treatment processes like composting, livestock operations, and wastewater plants pose notable occupational and environmental health risks. Biofiltration is a common mitigation measure for gaseous pollutants, but its effectiveness in controlling bioaerosols is less studied. This review synthesizes current evidence on biofiltration for the removal of bioaerosols. Findings indicate that biofiltration can significantly reduce emissions from waste-related biological processes, although results vary widely and depend heavily on design and operational factors. In

Increasing year-by-year vehicle production is related to the expanding volume of used tires; therefore, exploring waste management strategies is strongly recommended. The global tire market reached 2.27 billion units in 2021 and is expected to reach 2.67 billion units by 2027. Dumping tires in landfills can cause significant environmental impacts, so waste tire utilisation plays an important role. Predominantly, the following three directions are employed for waste tire disposal: retreading, energy recovery and material recovery. The review shows that used tires can remove environmental pollut

In tanneries, limed fleshing is an unavoidable waste generated in beamhouse operation. Proper management of limed fleshing with protein, fat, lime, and sulfide will help to protect the natural environment and at least reduce the pollution that ends up in it. In this study, excluding any pretreatment, limed fleshing is used for compost production. Chopped and mixed limed fleshing with chicken manure, cow dung, and sawdust was heaped onto a horizontal bamboo frame. Three composting heaps were fabricated weighing 720, 700, and 760 kg. The turning of composting materials in the heaps causes temper

The valorization of waste frying oil (WFO) to biodiesel has been carried out via solid base catalyzed transesterification reaction. A novel potassium tin oxide (KSO) catalyst was synthesized via polymer precursor auto combustion method. The catalyst showed the best physicochemical properties when it was calcined at 800 °C. Using KSO 800 catalyst, the highest FAME conversion (99.5%) of WFO found at moderated reaction condition within very short time (35 min); moreover, no leaching of K-species was observed in reusability test upto 5th cycle. Kinetics proved that the above catalytic reaction fol

Objectives: Dental clinics are one of the major producers of mercury-containing waste due to the use of dental amalgam. The atmospheric transport and persistence of mercury and its compounds in the environment, coupled with their high potential for bioaccumulation and detrimental effects on human health and ecosystems, underscore the necessity for effective management of mercury waste. Due to the lack of comprehensive and integrated guidelines for the effective management of dental amalgam waste in Iran, the objective of this study was to adapt a guideline for the management of amalgam waste

This study recommended a trade-off between zero-waste management of a brewery industry and zero-aim target of the drinking water sector. This study mainly aimed to decrease the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions resulting from groundwater treatment using biochar derived from malt sprout (MS) which is a waste by-product of a brewery industry. Also, CO2 resulting from groundwater treatment was collected and gas adsorption was performed to define the CO2 adsorption capacity of each biochar. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) was performed to determine the effect of groundwater quality on CO2 emissions.

Environmental pollution has been a major concern for researchers and policymakers. A number of studies have been conducted to enquire the causes of environmental pollution which suggested numerous policies and techniques as remedial measures. One such major source of environmental pollution, as reported by previous studies, has been the garbage resulting from disposed hospital wastes. The recent outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted into mass generation of medical waste which seems to have further deteriorated the issue of environmental pollution. This necessitates active attention fr

Healthcare waste management in rural and remote India should not be treated as merely a technical disposal problem but as a governance, behavioral, and community health challenge. Although India has a regulatory framework for biomedical waste management, implementation remains uneven in rural primary healthcare settings because of weak segregation practices, limited access to common biomedical waste treatment facilities, inadequate staff training, poor monitoring, and low community awareness. This viewpoint argues that rural healthcare waste management requires a decentralized and community-en

This paper analyses the regional allocation of Cohesion Policy investment in household waste-management infrastructure across 207 NUTS 2 regions in 22 EU Member States during the 2014-2020 programming period. Although previous research has mainly examined waste-management outcomes and, in some cases, the effects of public support, much less is known about how infrastructure investment itself is distributed across territories. An original regional database is constructed from Kohesio project-location information and combined with baseline indicators of landfill dependence, municipal waste gener

This study delves into the critical role of microbial ecosystems in landfills, which are pivotal for handling municipal solid waste (MSW). Within these landfills, a complex interplay of several microorganisms (aerobic/anaerobic bacteria, archaea or methanotrophs), drives the conversion of complex substrates into simplified compounds and complete mineralization into the water, inorganic salts, and gases, including biofuel methane gas. These landfills have dominant biotic and abiotic environments where various bacterial, archaeal, and fungal groups evolve and interact to decompose substrate by e
