One-day-old gnotobiotic piglets were inoculated intranasally with in vitro passaged porcine circovirus 1 (PCV-1), PCV-2, and porcine parvovirus (PPV) alone or in combination (PCV-1/PCV-2, PCV-1/PPV, and PCV-2/PPV). Piglets were evaluated for 1) the development of porcine postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS), 2) distribution of viral antigens by immunochemistry, and 3) viremia and the presence of viral DNA in nasal and ocular secretions and feces. All single agent-infected piglets and piglets infected with PCV-1/PCV-2 or PCV-1/PPV were clinically asymptomatic. They were transiently

Wasting marmoset syndrome (WMS) is a serious disease in captive common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) colonies. Because of the high mortality rates, elucidation of the underlying mechanisms is essential. In this study, we compared the histopathology, the number of each epithelial cell in the jejunum and colon, and the expression patterns of some molecular markers between healthy and WMS-affected marmosets. Atrophy of villi in the jejunum and mononuclear cell infiltration in the lamina propria were observed in the intestinal tract of WMS-affected marmosets. Although the numbers of transient ampl

Cerebral salt wasting syndrome can occur in children with encephalitis. Clinicians should be aware of hyponatremia in patients who develop polyuria with the signs of dehydration and deteriorated consciousness. Furthermore, patients who present with status epilepticus or who are suspected to have high intracranial pressure may have an increased risk of cerebral salt wasting syndrome.

Ante/neonatal Bartter syndrome (BS) is a rare hereditary disorder. It is characterized by renal salt wasting, hypokalaemic metabolic alkalosis, high renin and aldosterone but normal blood pressure. We report a low birth weight newborn baby who presented with repeated apnoea shortly after birth as well as hyponatraemia, hypochloraemia, hyperkalaemia and metabolic acidosis. Her biochemical features mimicked pseudohypoaldosteronism but with initial hypertension, which had not been described in BS. Her subsequent genetic study confirmed two novel heterozygous mutations in the Exon 5 of KCNJ1 compa

The paper discusses two cases of male infants, who developed a markedly elevated salt wasting syndrome in early infancy, resistant to treatment with mineralocorticoids. Steroid urinary profiles excluded congenital adrenal hyperplasia. However, both patients presented with extremely high excretion of aldosterone metabolite THAldo without effects of aldosterone action, what resulted in pseudohypoaldosteronism (PHA) diagnosis. The patients were treated with sodium supplementation, which normalized their clinical state and serum electrolytes. In the first patient the sporadic form of renal PHA1 is

24 consecutive AIDS patients with wasting, and who had never received anabolic therapies, were evaluated to determine their profile of sex hormones and whether transformation of testosterone (T) to the nuclear androgen, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), was impaired. Eleven (46%) patients had normal testosterone and DHT (group I), 10 (42%) had normal testosterone but low DHT (group II), and 3 (12%) had low testosterone and low DHT (group III). Age, prior opportunistic complications, symptoms, serum albumin, hemoglobin levels, and CD4 lymphocyte counts were similar in the groups. DHT was significantly

Previous reports have suggested that HIV-related wasting syndrome may be considered as a form of myopathy. The aim of the present study was to investigate histopathological muscle changes in HIV-related wasting syndrome in order to know if there is a common substrate and whether muscle plays a primary or secondary role in its development. Patients with wasting syndrome diagnosed by Centers for Disease Control (CDC) criteria were prospectively evaluated. Clinical, analytical, nutritional, anthropometrical and muscular data were recorded. The patients were subdivided into two groups: group A was

Cachexia is a multifactorial syndrome defined by significant body weight loss, fat and muscle mass reduction, and increased protein catabolism. Protein energy wasting (PEW) is characterized as a syndrome of adverse changes in nutrition and body composition being highly prevalent in patients with CKD, especially in those undergoing dialysis, and it is associated with high morbidity and mortality in this population. Multiple mechanisms are involved in the genesis of these adverse nutritional changes in CKD patients. There is no obvious distinction between PEW and cachexia from a pathophysiologic

Cerebral salt wasting is characterized by inappropriate natriuresis and volume contraction in the presence of cerebral pathology. Diagnosis can be difficult and therapy is challenging. We report two children with tuberculous meningitis and hydrocephalus who developed cerebral salt wasting following neurosurgical intervention. The first patient was managed with rigorous salt and water replacement whereas the second patient required the addition of fludrocortisone for control of salt-wasting.

A 53-year-old male was admitted to our hospital for a high fever. He suffered a change in personality, memory loss and disorientation as well. The findings of cerebrospinal fluid showed monocytosis, but the titers of glucose, C1 and ADA were all normal. Although there was no bacterium in the CSF, the patient's electroencephalography finding was abnormal. We diagnosed his condition as viral meningoencephalitis and started treatment with antiviral agents. Blood chemistry showed serum sodium of 130 mEq/l and plasma osmolarity was reduced to 272 mOsm/kg, while urine osmolarity was high at 353 mOsm

OBJECTIVE: Hydroelectrolytic disturbances are part of the complications of subarachnoid hemorrhage. Cerebral salt wasting syndrome (CSWS) must be considered when hyponatremia is associated with a decrease in circulating volume. We performed this study to determine the clinical characteristics and management paradigm of patients with serum sodium concentration abnormalities and aneurysmatic subarachnoid hemorrhage.
METHODS: We analyzed retrospectively clinical and laboratory data from eight patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage due to rupture of an intracranial saccular aneurysm and cerebral s

The authors examined data from a large cohort of HIV-infected persons to demonstrate recent trends in wasting syndrome, to examine the influence of wasting syndrome on the incidence of other opportunistic illnesses, and to explore if any of the commonly prescribed treatments for wasting are associated with improved survival. Kaplan-Meier analysis and multivariate left-truncated Cox models were used to estimate time to death after the first diagnosis of wasting syndrome and to quantify the association between the covariate and mortality, respectively. The incidence of wasting declined during 19

Hyponatremia in acute brain disease is a common occurrence, especially after an aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. Originally, excessive natriuresis, called cerebral salt wasting, and later the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH), were considered to be the causes of hyponatremia. In recent years, it has become clear that most of these patients are volume-depleted and have a negative sodium balance, consistent with the original description of cerebral salt wasting. Elevated plasma concentrations of atrial or brain natriuretic peptide have been identified as the put

A 37-year-old female with a medical history of recently diagnosed active pulmonary tuberculosis and a new intracranial lesion presented with altered mental status, nausea, and vomiting for two days. An initial physical examination revealed that the patient was euvolemic. Laboratory findings revealed a serum sodium concentration of 105 mEq/L. During her admission, she was initially managed with lactated ringer solution in the emergency department, followed by 3% normal saline in the intensive care unit, and, eventually, on oral sodium chloride and fluid restriction on discharge. Once she was st

A 58-year-old male presented with fever, nausea, and vomiting since 15 days along with irritability and confusion since 5 days. His laboratory reports showed low serum sodium, serum osmolality and uric acid. Computerized tomography (CT) scan of brain revealed age-related changes. While on lumbar puncture (LP) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) examination, CSF protein, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and total leukocyte count (predominant lymphocytes) were all increased. On his 14th day of admission, his serum sodium was 116 mEq/l and he had a high urine output. Fluid restriction was tried in order to

BACKGROUND: In patients with severe central nervous system (CNS) diseases, life-threatening hyponatremia results from two main causes: the syndromes of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH) and cerebral salt wasting (CSW). Clinical manifestations of the two conditions may be similar but their pathogeneses are fundamentally diverse. Distinguishing SIADH from CSW is based on the differential diagnoses of dilutional hyponatremia due to an excessive amount of water in the body (SIADH) and depletional hyponatremia caused by extensive natriuresis (CSW).

This review paper concentrates on the aetiology, diagnosis, and pathological aspects of postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS). PMWS was first recognized in Canada in 1996 as a new emerging disease which caused wasting in postweaned pigs. Since then, PMWS has been recognized in pigs in many countries. The syndrome is caused by a DNA virus referred to as porcine circovirus 2 (PCV2), which is classified in the family Circoviridae. PMWS primarily occurs in pigs between 25 and 120 days of age with the highest number of cases occurring between 60 and 80 days of age. The diagnosis of PMWS

Many HIV patients develop weight loss, which increases morbidity and mortality. We aimed to assess the effects of testosterone therapy on lean body mass, total body weight, over-all exercise functional capacity, and perceived quality of life in patients with HIV wasting syndrome and its adverse effects. We systematically reviewed randomised, placebo-controlled trials that compared the effects of testosterone therapy with placebo in HIV patients with wasting. Eight trials met the inclusion criteria and 417 randomised patients were included. Only six trials used lean-body mass, fat-free mass, or

A case of cerebral salt wasting syndrome secondary to head injury is reported here. A 4-year-old boy was admitted to our hospital with head injury. Neurological examination revealed no abnormal findings other than consciousness disturbance. Plain skull X-ray demonstrated a linear fracture of the bilateral parietal bones, and CT scan demonstrated subarachnoid hemorrhage of the tentorium of the cerebellum. He gradually improved, but on the 6th day deterioration of consciousness developed. At that time CT scan demonstrated no abnormal findings. Biochemical analysis showed hyponatremia (116mEq/L)
