Extreme weather events (EWE) contribute to heightened psychosocial stressors through complex pathways, including by worsening resource insecurities. Refugee settlements globally are disproportionately exposed to EWE compared with host national populations, yet refugees' experiences of resource insecurity-related psychosocial stressors in low-income humanitarian settings are understudied. Our study focused on understanding the lived experiences of psychosocial stressors in the context of EWE and resource insecurity among refugee youth in Bidi Bidi Refugee Settlement, Uganda. This qualitative st

BACKGROUND: Water, sanitation, and hygiene (WaSH) insecurity increases the risk of water-related diseases. However, limited research has been conducted on psychosocial distress as it relates to WaSH insecurity, especially among people who inject drugs (PWID). We examined the relationship between WaSH insecurity and related anxiety among PWID living in different housing conditions along the US-Mexico border region.
METHODS: From 2020-2021, a cross-sectional study was conducted among 585 people who injected drugs within the last month in Tijuana (N = 202), San Diego (N = 182), and in both Tijua

The Greater Horn of Africa suffered the worst drought in >40 years between late 2020 and early 2023. Using a prospective, interdisciplinary unbalanced panel study between 2019-2024 among Daasanach pastoralists in northern Kenya, we measured the effects of and recovery from this drought in relation to experiential and objective measures. We examined water and food insecurity, coping and dietary strategies, and nutritional status among 515 adults and 384 children. Livestock herds dropped precipitously with little recovery by 2024. Individuals' consideration of moving due to water problems alongs

Climate change has led to an increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, forcing approximately 72 million people throughout the world to face limitations in terms of access to food in 2023. In Brazil, this scenario intensifies situations of chronic hunger, poverty, and social inequalities, increasing vulnerability particularly among young children. The aim of this paper is to propose a conceptual model that elucidates and explains these relationships. A literature review was conducted using the terms "climate change", "food insecurity", "child malnutrition", and combinat

INTRODUCTION: Canada has the second highest per capita water consumption in the world. However, little is known about complex socio-economic and cultural dynamics of water insecurities in Indigenous communities and the multiple health consequences. Most studies have concentrated on a simplified interpretation of accessibility, availability and quality issues, including some common water-borne infections as the only health outcomes. Thus, several government initiatives on potable water supply, particularly for remotely located communities, have failed to sustain and promote a healthy lifestyle.

IMPORTANCE: Water, energy, and food (WEF) insecurities are widespread in South Africa and are associated with adverse health outcomes. However, research has typically examined these insecurities separately, resulting in limited understanding of their interconnected associations with health and the pathways through which they may influence health outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: To develop a conceptual framework describing the associations between WEF insecurities and health outcomes in South Africa by synthesizing existing evidence on the pathways through which WEF insecurities may influence health.

INTRODUCTION: Extreme weather events (EWEs) and resource insecurities are linked to genitourinary infections, yet this is understudied in adolescent girls and young women (AGYW). We examined associations between resource insecurities, EWE exposure, HIV vulnerability factors, and self-reported urinary tract infection (UTI) symptoms among AGYW in Nairobi and Kisumu, Kenya.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted cross-sectional analyses of survey data collected with a purposive sample of AGYW (16-24 years) in Nairobi (Mathare and Majengo informal settlements) and Kisumu (Ogal and Rota beaches) (Octo

The cases of malnutrition, water insecurity, and the collapse of the health system, turning into a humanitarian crisis, have been illustrated by the 2025 outbreak of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) in Gaza, which is a form of treatable post-infectious neuropathy. Toward the end of August 2025, there were reports of over 90 cases and at least 10 deaths due to shortages of intravenous immunoglobulin, plasma-exchange filters, and ventilators. GBS-inducing enteric pathogens such as Campylobacter jejuni are likely promoted by chronic food insecurity and fecal contamination of water, but micronutrient

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Despite Canada's and the United States' acceptance of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), achieving equitable water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH)-related services among Indigenous peoples remain at issue for the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Water anxiety is a mental health burden threatening resilience, given cultural stewardship imperatives for water well-being.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTINGS: Peer-reviewed literature documenting water anxiety/insecurity was explored in relation to resilience among Indigenous communit

BACKGROUND: Ethiopia has seen an increase in the number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) due to conflict and violence related to border-based disputes and climate change. This study examines the insecurities experienced by IDPs in the Burayu camp and how they navigate and challenge them. Violence and insecurity have daunted Ethiopian regions for decades, violated children's rights, and impeded the achievement of the United Nation's sustainable development goals related to children, such as good healthcare and mental health, quality education, clean water, and sanitation. The deterioratin

BACKGROUND: Older adults in low-income and fragile states often age with intersecting burdens of chronic disease, functional decline, and material deprivation, yet they remain largely invisible in research and policy. In Haiti, recurrent political crises, violence, and weak health and social protection systems may amplify late-life inequities, but national data are scarce. We examined the distribution and social determinants of health, functioning, and material insecurity among older Haitian adults.
METHODS: We analyzed data from adults aged ≥ 60 years (n = 1,408) drawn from a 2024 nationally

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Over centuries, Ethiopia has experienced severe famines and periods of serious drought, and malnutrition remains a major public health problem. The aims of this study were to estimate seasonal variations in child stunting and wasting, and identify factors associated with both forms of child malnutrition in drought-prone areas.
METHODS: This cohort study was conducted among a random sample of 909 children in rural southern Ethiopia. The same children were followed for 1 year (2017-2018) with quarterly repeated measurements of their outcomes: height-for-age and weight

BACKGROUND: Humanitarian settings face elevated extreme weather events (EWEs), yet few studies with refugees have examined EWE-related risks and associations with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) vulnerabilities.
METHODS: Among refugee youth ages 16-24 y in a Ugandan refugee settlement, we conducted latent class analysis to examine EWE-related risk classes (resource insecurities [water, food, sanitation], EWE exposure, mobility) and multivariable regression to assess associations between class membership and HIV vulnerabilities (sexual relationship power [SRP], intimate partner violence [IP

Cholera remains a major public health threat in the Democratic Republic of Congo, particularly in North Kivu, a province marked by chronic armed conflict and humanitarian crises. This review explores how insecurity, mass displacement, and the collapse of health and sanitation systems have contributed to the resurgence of cholera epidemics. Recurrent armed clashes have not only weakened local health structures but also created living conditions that facilitate the spread of waterborne diseases. Efforts by health authorities and humanitarian organizations have included emergency case management,

OBJECTIVE: Rapid development in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) has led to changes in diet that have outpaced water and sanitation improvements, contributing to a dual burden of overweight and noncommunicable disease risk factors (OWT/NCD) and undernutrition and infectious disease symptoms (UND/ID) within individuals and households. Yet, little work has examined the joint impact of water and food exposures on the development of the dual burden.
METHODS: We use data from Ecuador's nationally representative Encuesta Nacional de Salud y Nutrición (ENSANUT-ECU) to test whether water acces

Climate change is a major driver of food insecurity in Ethiopia, affecting agricultural productivity, water availability, and rural livelihoods. The country's reliance on rain-fed agriculture increases its vulnerability to climate-related hazards, underscoring the need to synthesize existing evidence on climate risks and food system vulnerability. This systematic review synthesized scientific evidence on the impacts of climate change on Ethiopia's food systems, identified major climate-related risks and vulnerability factors, and assessed adaptation strategies and their policy implications.
