Design of Solution-Processable Cationic Polyelectrolytes as Versatile Adsorbents for Toxic Iodine, Dye, and Pharmaceutical Wastes across Multiple Media.

Rapid industrialization has intensified water pollution, leading to severe environmental and health concerns due to the presence of radioactive waste, synthetic dyes, and pharmaceutical residues. Cationic polyelectrolytes offer an efficient and reusable solution for water purification via ion-exchange and electrostatic interactions. These polyelectrolytes efficiently removed radioactive waste such as iodine (in vapor, aqueous, and organic media), methyl orange dye, and pharmaceutical waste diclofenac, exhibiting high adsorption capacities and fast kinetics (rate constant up to 0.072 mg g-1 min

The accumulation of radioactive contaminants in drinking water distribution systems.

The accumulation of trace contaminants in drinking water distribution system sediment and scales has been documented, raising concerns that the subsequent release of the contaminants back to the water is a potential human exposure pathway. Radioactive contaminants are of concern because of their known health effects and because of their persistence within associated distribution system materials. The objective of this work was to measure the amount of a number of radioactive contaminants (radium, thorium, and uranium isotopes, and gross alpha and beta activity) in distribution solids collected

Models for predicting the transport of radionuclides in the Red Sea.

Two radionuclide transport models for the Red Sea are described: a Lagrangian model to deal with emergency situations and a Eulerian model better suited to longer term simulations, as for instance required in case of chronic radionuclide releases. Baroclinic circulation is obtained for both transport models from HYCOM ocean model. The Lagrangian model also includes tides, which are obtained from a standard tidal model customized to the Red Sea, and currents induced by local winds. Both models describe exchanges of radionuclides between water and sediments. A number of simulations were carried

Radium in hydraulic fracturing wastewater: distribution in suspended solids and implications to its treatment by sulfate co-precipitation.

High concentrations of barium (Ba), strontium (Sr) and radium (Ra) are present in both the liquid and suspended solid portions of wastewater produced from hydraulic fracturing. These high concentrations often require special treatment in which the solid and liquid portions are separated and then independently treated prior to disposal. The solids are typically disposed in landfills while the liquids are further treated, recycled for future hydraulic fracturing, or disposed via injection wells. Finding optimal treatment methods of both the solid and the liquid fractions requires a thorough unde

Depleted uranium disturbs immune parameters in zebrafish, Danio rerio: an ex vivo/in vivo experiment.

In this study, we investigated the effects of depleted uranium (DU), the byproduct of nuclear enrichment of uranium, on several parameters related to defence system in the zebrafish, Danio rerio, using flow cytometry. Several immune cellular parameters were followed on kidney leucocytes: cell proportion, cell mortality, phagocytosis activity and associated oxidative burst and lysosomal membrane integrity (LMI). Effects of DU were tested ex vivo after 17 h of contact between DU and freshly isolated leucocytes from 0 to 500 µg DU/L. Moreover, adult zebrafish were exposed in vivo during 3 days at

Biological and chemical interactions with U(VI) during anaerobic enrichment in the presence of iron oxide coated quartz.

Microcosm experiments were performed to understand chemical and biological interactions with hexavalent uranium (U(VI)) in the presence of iron oxide bearing minerals and trichloroethylene (TCE) as a co-contaminant. Interactions of U(VI) and hydrous iron oxide moieties on the mineral oxide surfaces were studied during enrichments for dissimilatory iron reducing (DIRB) and sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB). Microbes enriched from groundwater taken from the Test Area North (TAN) site at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) were able to reduce the U(VI) in the adsorption medium as well as the iron o

Solid-solution partitioning of plutonium in surface waters at the Atomic Weapons Establishment Aldermaston (UK).

The Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) at Aldermaston (Berkshire, UK) has provided and maintained the warheads for the UK's nuclear deterrent for more than 50 years. Whilst the site is radiologically safe, in a few locations the soil contains specific activities of plutonium (Pu) above background arising from a legacy of historic operations. Run-off water (a mixture of rainwater and groundwater) from part of the site is routed into a water management system, and after analysis and radiological assessment, released into local streams. Water and sediment samples have been collected from a number

A risk assessment for consumers of mourning doves.

Recreational and subsistence hunters and anglers consume a wide range of species, including birds, mammals, fish and shellfish, some of which represent significant exposure pathways for environmental toxic agents. This study focuses on the Department of Energy's (DOE's) Savannah River Site (SRS), a former nuclear weapons production facility in South Carolina. The potential risk of contaminant intake from consuming mourning doves (Zenaida macroura), the most popular United States game bird, was examined under various risk scenarios. For all of these scenarios we used the mean tissue concentrati

Distribution and potential health risk of groundwater uranium in Korea.

Chronic exposure even to extremely low specific radioactivity of natural uranium in groundwater results in kidney problems and potential toxicity in bones. This study was conducted to assess the potential health risk via intake of the groundwater containing uranium, based on the determination of the uranium occurrence in groundwater. The groundwater was investigated from a total of 4140 wells in Korea. Most of the groundwater samples showed neutral pH and (sub-)oxic condition that was influenced by the mixing with shallow groundwater due to long-screened (open) wells. High uranium contents exc

Delocalized π-electron polymeric nanoflowers with dual redox functionalities for high-capacity and ultrafast capacitive removal of Sr(II).

The remediation of radioactive wastewater containing hazardous Sr(II) is critical for environmental safety and public health, driving demand for efficient water purification technologies. Capacitive deionization (CDI) has emerged as a promising electrochemical strategy for ion removal; however, its efficiency in capturing Sr2+ remains limited by the scarcity of suitable high-performance electrode materials. Herein, we develop a polymeric nanoflower material, Poly-Triphenylene-Tetracarboxyl-Perylene (PTTP), with an intrinsically delocalized electronic structure for use as an advanced CDI electr

Relative comparison of tissue specific bioaccumulation and radiation dose estimation in marine and freshwater bivalve molluscs following exposure to phosphorus-32.

With respect to environmental protection, understanding radionuclide bioconcentration is necessary to relate exposure to radiation dose and hence to biological responses. Few studies are available on tissue specific accumulation of short-lived radionuclides in aquatic invertebrates. Short-lived radionuclides such as 32Phosphorus (32P), although occurring in small quantities in the environment, are capable of concentrating in the biota, especially if they are chronically exposed. In this study, we firstly compared tissue specific bioaccumulation and release (depuration) of 32P in adult marine (

Back diffusion of a Th-230-Ra-226 decay chain in a multilayer fractured-rock matrix with stagnant-zone and skin effects.

This study develops a one-dimensional numerical model to investigate back diffusion of the Th-230-Ra-226 decay chain in fractured crystalline rock with a stagnant water zone, an altered fracture-skin layer, and an intact host-rock matrix. Radionuclide-specific boundary conditions are applied: Th-230 is supplied from the stagnant zone via time-dependent source strength functions (step, exponential, and linear depletion), whereas Ra-226 is constrained to a zero-concentration boundary so that all Ra-226 originates from in situ matrix decay. The finite-difference model, validated against two analy

Fragmentation of extracellular DNA by long-term exposure to radiation from uranium in aquatic environments.

Persistent harmful scenarios associated with disposal of radioactive waste, high-background radiation areas and severe nuclear accidents are of great concern regarding consequences to both human health and the environment. Of particular concern is the extracellular DNA in aquatic environments contaminated by radiological substances. Strand breaks induced by radiation promote decrease in the transformation efficiency for extracellular DNA. The focus of this study is the quantification of DNA damage following long-term exposure (over one year) to low doses of natural uranium (an alpha particle e

The assessment of human exposure to radionuclides from a uranium mill tailings release and mine dewatering effluent.

This study provides an assessment of human exposure to radiation from a river system contaminated by radionuclides of the 238U decay series released through a dam break at a uranium mill tailings pond and by the continuous discharge of dewatering effluent from 2 uranium mines. The in vivo analyses of radionuclides in 6 Navajo Indians who lived near the river indicate no detectable elevations above background concentrations. Dose estimates for inhalation of suspended river sediment indicate a maximum annual 50-yr dose commitment of 204 mrem to the endosteum. Estimates of doses (50-yr dose commi

Enhanced sorption of trichloroethene by smectite clay exchanged with Cs+.

Trichloroethene (TCE) is one of the most common pollutants in groundwater, and Cs+ can be a cocontaminant at nuclear facilities. Smectite clays have large surface areas, are common in soils, have high affinities for some organic contaminants, and hence can potentially influence the transport of organic pollutants entering soils and sediments. The exchangeable cations present near smectite clay surfaces can radically influence the sorption of organic pollutants by soil clays. This research was undertaken to determine the effect of Cs+, and other common interlayer cations, such as K+ and Ca2+, o

Mining in the Alligator Rivers Region, northern Australia: assessing potential and actual effects on ecosystem and human health.

This paper presents an overview of issues related to surface water contamination arising from uranium mining activities in the Alligator Rivers Region (ARR) of northern Australia, and a program of research and monitoring that must assess the potential and actual effects on ecosystem and human health. The program of assessing effects on aquatic ecosystems involves a four-tiered approach including the derivation of local water quality guideline trigger values, direct toxicity assessment of mine waters prior to their release, creekside or in situ monitoring for early warning of adverse effects du
